2019 College football thread - It's 2020, yo. Go to the new thread. (1 Viewer)

DIdn't have a chance to get out to mgoblog yet today.  That post is a lot of what I was alluding to in my post to @Capella  with regard to player development.  I love the content at that site, but the guys posting there are brutal, well, most of them.  Cappy, it's worth going to check out if you want insight from an insider fighting his way through the legacy stuff.  He's pretty good.  Most of what I said is on the "how did we get here?" side.  He's good at going through what "here" looks like today.
Good stuff — I will. My wife called them my “football team in law” (which I thought was great) yesterday so I have to show interest.

Did you read down that tweet chain a bit? Kinda funny comments, but at the same time it makes you wonder:

Replying to @Alskee_ @AlabamaFTBL
only at Alabama do you pass on a top 15-20 draft pick to comeback for another season of playing football for free - why pay players if they don't want to be paid @TMAY7777 - seems like a revenge tour is coming

Why So Serious
@03Javi03

Bag man pays more than a rookie NFL contract

you know I talked to a former saban player from Michigan St and he said same thing about Irvin and Burress taking pay cuts to go to NFL LOL

Hang on. Didn’t Aub have two first round DL do the same last year?
Oh I totally believe that. If you know about my posts here I am not only a firm believer but a proponent of the bag man.

edit: still, bag man ain’t paying 12M

I got a call from the Red Elephant Club on Monday. They are targeting 7 kids to get to return, so need to raise roughly $20M / year for the next 5....I upped my yearly contribution to $100k. But don’t tell anyone.

At work (sigh) so not able to watch but I see that BC/Cinci is in a weather delay.  Is weather going to stay bad enough we should live bet that under 45.5?

Gotta get it done.

If they're bagging they're the worst school in the world at it since they managed to turn the Michigan money cannon into zero guys ranked higher than 92nd in this class.
You know Michigan could be great at bagging, too. There's no reason to pretend to be above it after Ed Martin and the Fab Five. Zero doubt the $$$ would be there. Plus, cultural acceptance of paying athletes is growing - even if they got caught, by the time it happened it would probably be legal anyway.

That’s how many are draft eligible. But since a players only meeting post-Iron Bowl, there has been a buzz that they are trying to get a big group to return..led by Tua. 2 big ones have announced a return in the last few days, but a bunch still left and Tua announces on Monday. About as exciting as an off-season can be after a disappointing end to the season.
Just dumb

If a college player is ever wondering if they should go Pro or not I would just refer them to Matt Leinart.  Leaving money on the table is just wrong.   Saban must be one smooth talker.

The only guys potentially in the top 15 outside Tua are leaving...Jeudy and Wills. Saban provides better NFL feedback than any other coach I’m sure. It’s a combo of many things, but disappointing draft grades across the board I’m sure is one.

The tackle was a for sure top-15 guy I thought.

It's misleading.  Fields is just starting his wind up and the defender is already fully breaking to the spot.  There was a better angle during the game.

The defender had the read on that pass.  If the WR doesn't break off the route I'd say 15% chance it's picked, 80% chance it's incomplete, 5% chance it's completed.  The defender was going to beat him to the spot.

Still a different world from a sure interception, but I think a completion there was a longshot.

ETA: Case in point, Russ's game ending Super Bowl INT right before he throws the pass

Them twitter folk are wildly underestimating how much ground a safety covers once he's read a pass.

Just heard Wes Durham say he's 69-1 in his last 70 games.   Lost once as a senior in high school but was undefeated as a Soph and Junior.
He was pissed off this year when his side lost the spring game.  He wanted to get back in the game late to try a last minute comeback.

I read something about how he didn’t have control over the players and the team fistfight before the bowl was the last straw.

Rutgers hired Sean Gleeson from Ok State as the new OC. He’s the guy that was being mentioned as a possibility back when Schiano was still working out his own deal, so very happy it got done.

You’re being sucked back in, aren’t you?

😂

Believe I posted as much the day he got hired. Schiano was literally the only realistic option that could have done it. He’s assembled a great staff so far, which goes to show what can be done when the guy comes in with a good plan and more importantly has the budget to make it work.

Fran Brown is going to kill it for us with South Jersey recruiting right up until he leaves to be a great HC somewhere.

Be afraid, PSU. Be verrrrrrryyyy.... ok you’ll be fine.

@Fat Drunk and Stupid will be happy to know Gene Chizik is being rumored to be in the running at Miss State, the school that supposedly Narced on him (Chizik) and AU in regards to Cam.
Have a source extremely tight at Baylor. (yeah) that cowbell offered Napier first but he's already agreed to take the Baylor job once rhule announces for the Giants or Panthers.

@ChrisVannini: Some people think bowl sponsorships are worthless. But this Lockheed Martin commercial has me considering buying an F-35 instead of a car.

@TylerNettuno: Four star receiver Xzavier Henderson, younger brother of CJ Henderson, announces his commit to the #Gators.

Huge get for Mullen

So only 4 of the Top 30 California HS football players staying in state. One is undeclared.  In other words roughly 84% of California Top 30 going out of state.

@ChrisKarpman: California Top-30 recruit signings in 2020 class (247Sports Composite)

Arizona State — 7
Oregon — 4
Washington — 4
Alabama — 2
Georgia — 2
Michigan — 2
Ohio State — 2
Stanford — 2
Clemson — 1
UCLA — 1
Utah — 1
USC — 1
Undeclared — 1

A stunning and unprecedented result for ASU.

Kids are smart to play for Herm and Marvin at ASU.   Tough to compete with those guys with meaningful NFL experience not to mention excellent role models.

They will be favored to win the Pac12 South next year and probably the favorites to win the Pac in 2021.

Know some parents at top football high schools in AZ who have had their kids tour ASU and have said Herm Edwards is shockingly impressive.

I can see Herm taking over a room quite easily. His public persona is intelligent and likeable. With his age,  I wasn't sure if the game had passed him by as far as Xs and Os. Looks like he delegates quite successfully though.

Doesn't even surprise me.  He's an impressive speaker with an NFL resume as a coach.  I can easily see kids wanting to play for him.

ASU definitely recruiting better but they still lack the talent that Oregon and Washington have.
