2020-21 NBA *Playoffs* Thread: Bucks are the champs and you can take that to the bank bromigos (2 Viewers)

Fun game. Clippers had a good opportunity to steal game 1 with Conley out and they squandered it. We were on the cusp of some great PG13% jokes but he ruined it by hitting those couple shots at the end.

Trae Young has had a total of 42 possessions against Ben Simmons and has scored 8 points against him.
Good luck with that.  Simmons can't check Trae for an entire series.  Not saying Doc shouldn't go that route, just that Ben won't do much but assure the Hawks "other players" end up with a lot of open jumpers.

@msudaisy26  I heard today from some know-nothing media guy that McCollum is more likely than Dame to be traded from PDX, maybe to Boston.  I could live with that.  Any thoughts?
Agreed 100%.  When the Blazers traded for Norman Powell the writing was on the wall.  He's a bigger defender to pair with Lillard in the backcourt.  McCollum makes a lot of money though, so the player coming back may be in the Kevin Love mold.

if Embiid could stay healthy and cared all the time he could be in the conversation for greatest big man of all time

i just don't know how you stop him from doing whatever he wants
The best ability is availability.  Embiid isn't available enough to be an all-timer.  Philly fans need to adjust and hope he'll be a Bill Walton type that can lead the Sixers to a title before it falls apart.  Anything else seems overly hopeful.

What do you call a 3 and D guy that can't shoot 3's or play D?
Russ?  Just move him to point guard, give him the rock at all times, and let him chase triple-doubles.

Why can't he?   I still feel taking Trae out of the game (even a little bit) is the route.

If you were Doc, would you put someone else on him and put Ben on a different player?

Because no one defender can stay in front of Trae and Ben is more useful as a help defender than risking the foul trouble that comes with 30+ minutes defending Young.  Plus, Capella and Collins would hurt the Sixers on the boards if Simmons is outside all game.

If I'm Doc I hedge to get the ball out of Trae's hands a lot more.  Make anybody else make the correct plays/decisions.  Bogdanovic can do it in stretches, but that's about it at this level right now.  Simmons, Embiid, and Tybulle (when he's in there) are good enough to recover behind it.

Hmmm.  Ya maybe.  So you'd rotate defenders on Young all game?  He torched Green in game 1.  Simmons has kept him in check for two games in a row now.  As soon as Ben was on him both games, he really limited him.  I kinda think I'd leave Ben on him, but that's just me.   I do expect Trae to be better next game.

Have to wonder how much the home court advantage is going to matter in the Jazz/Clippers series.  Utah has a full, activated crowd while the Staples Center is full of card board cutouts.  That's a big difference.

Ya.  But the Clippers were undefeated on the road before tonight.

...and at home?  The Jazz are a complete team while the Mavs were a one-man show.  I like the Clippers team, but that's a lot to overcome.  I'd also like to see Tyronne Lue quit playing Zubac so much.  Match his minutes with Derrick Favors, but anything else just isn't working.  Gotta play Terrence Mann more.

Also, Lue should have called a timeout that last play.  Not right away (teams get much better looks when they push the ball), but after the first Kawhi and George attempts went sideways he should have called it.  There were still 3+ seconds left and there was nothing good happening.  Kerr does this all the time with Golden State.  Let the players go, but be ready to call the TO if nothing materializes.

An NBA source said the league ordered the Nets to cut out the gamesmanship tactic of a timer shown on the overhead scoreboard at Barclays Center during Game 1 of their playoff series against the Bucks whenever the two-time MVP was at the line.

The NBA had its most-watched first round of the playoffs in three years. The first round of the NBA Playoffs averaged 3.06 million viewers across ESPN/ABC and TNT, up 46% from last year’s months-delayed, fanless postseason in the “bubble” and up 3% from 2019, the last postseason to begin as normal in the month of April.

There were 2,909 games lost to soft-tissue injuries this regular season, according to certified athletic trainer Jeff Stotts, who maintains the most authoritative public injury-tracking database that covers the NBA. It’s the second-highest figure Stotts has recorded since he began tracking in 2005-06. The most was 3,038 in the 2017-18 season, which was played in 82 games vs. the 72-game campaign this year

Regarding Cam Reddish, hasn't he been pretty awful so far in his career?

Disclaimer: I really haven't watched him play much, more of a comment based on his statistics. I'm guessing he's a good/promising defender?
He hasn’t lived up to expectations but I’d still take him over 50 year old Lou.

Odd to put Embiid back in with the bench playing this well up 20 with 6:30 left.
seems about the right time to leave early so you can get an early start on treatment or something.....

it's hard to tell what the free throw rules actually are...."by the book" there is probably an a violation on almost every free throw.....like Lebron is one of the worst about stepping over the line before the ball hits the rim, etc......but things never get called...

Here are my updated predictions:

  • Clippers are tough, but I expect the Jazz to win in 6.
  • Bucks are apparently severely outmatched (but shouldn't be in theory).  Nets in 6.
  • Phoenix is too deep for Denver without Murray.  Suns in 5.
  • Sixers will get better throughout the series if Embiid stays healthy.  Sixers over ATL in 6.
Conference Finals:

  • Jazz over Suns in 7.  This one could go either way, but I feel like Utah is deeper, more versatile and better defensively.
  • Nets over Sixers in 6.  Harden will likely be back for the ECF and Durant is unstoppable.  So is Embiid, but he'll wear out quicker and his #2 is Curry.  After Durant is Harden and Irving.  Simmons can't guard all 3 and Thybulle is only a marginally better shooter than Simmons, so you can't have them both out there together for very long.
Finals:  Jazz over Nets in 7.  Maybe just wishful thinking, but I do think they have the ability to score with the Nets and guard them.  As great as the Nets are from the outside, they get a lot of buckets in the paint through blow-by drives.  Utah can handle that better than most else with big athletic wings and Gobert on the backside.  Conley on Kyrie, Mitchell on Harden and a steady rotation of guys on Durant.  Snyder is a much better coach than Budenholzer or Rivers and will have a plan in place.

It's super sloppy.  They actually called a defensive FT violation on the Clippers in the 1st quarter last night.  I don't know why they allow the step-in/step-out prior to the shot.  As a HS ref, I cringe every time.

And Harden is one of the worst (or at least he used to be) at falling forward as he shot.  He is in very early on every single FT.

I ref HS as well....watching an NBA game usually requires a neck brace after a quarter of me shaking my head every trip down the floor.....in my perfect world I could get past all the free throw stuff if they would just call the palming/carrying and quit rewarding the offense for creating all the contact on drives to the basket....watching Lebron/Harden/etc  lower their shoulder and purposely run into guys who are actually giving ground or just standing there drives me nuts......(more defenders should "pull the chair" IMO..it would be fun to see these guys flail around and fall down with no contact)....

eta: also the crying and running to the ref on every foul call.....actually thought they tried to implement a rule about that a few years ago, but it seems to have gone away...

Rick Mahorn did this to McHale a lot.

One of the three things he was good at.

My biggest problem is the screens.  Just too much leaning outside of the frame to maintain contact and at times screeners are still moving into the defender when contact is made.

Suns owned the Jazz in the regular season

Suns owned the Jazz in the regular season
Game 1 - Dec 31, 2020 - Suns shoot 51.5% from 3 and win by 11.  Bogdonavic had 3 pts.

Game 2 - April 7, 2021 - Suns win in OT by 4.  Booker scores 35, Paul 29.  Mitchell has 41 in the loss.

Game 3 - April 30, 2021 - Suns win by 21.  Neither Mitchell nor Conley played in the game.

The first game was like the 5th game of the season, so not much stock in that one.  The second game went to OT and the 3rd game was without the Jazz best player and starting PG.

They took care of business and won all 3 games, but I wouldn't put much stock in those wins going into a 7 game series if Mitchell and Conley are both healthy and playing.

are there any sites that track individual possessions to see things like "X defended Y on # possessions"?

i feel like there is, but i can't find it.

Except on Simmons last night.

I agree it was an illegal screen though.
growing up we had a dog that wound up having a litter of puppies. 6 of them were perfectly normal. one of them would walk in circles. over and over and over again.

you could pick the dog up and try to coax it to walk straight. it couldn't. it would try to engage in play with its siblings, but couldn't effectively coordinate play because the poor thing's brain just led it in circles. literally. it was incredibly sad and hard to watch as a little kid who couldn't really figure out why one puppy was "broken".

parents told us the dog was blind in one eye. but it was some sort of brain damage and her condition deteriorated until there was no option but to do the humane thing.

this feels a lot like that.

I was responding to a post that illegal screens are never called in the playoffs with an example of one that had. Also agreed it was a good call.  But okay.

Shame I couldn't stay awake to finish this game out.

Good grief, Furley!

Knicks lose in round 1, Suns beat lakers in 6 and have a 1 game lead on the Nuggets.

If the Jazz are favored vs,. the Suns it will be a gift from the gods.
It is definitely going to be a toss up, IMO.  Utah has home court which will not be insignificant.

I feel like they are the 2 most balanced and complete teams in the playoffs.  Both have good guards, go-to scorers, deep benches and legit big men.

Jazz had their first version of these a few years ago that were beautiful. These new iterations are cool too, but them, Nuggets, and Suns are all using similar styles right now.

My 14 yr old son and some of his friends are really into NBA jerseys.  He bought one of these old school, T-Mac purple Raptor jerseys for himself a few months ago.

He also said he liked and wanted one of the Jazz jerseys from last night.  He isn't even a Jazz fan.

As long as he doesn't make a push for "The Valley".

My god what were they thinking and how did that get through?  And they went so far as to blast it out on their court?  :lmao:

My point was comparing the regular season to the playoffs isn't the best comparison.
It's all that we have for the Jazz and Suns as currently constructed.

I think the Suns handle the Jazz in the Western Conference Finals if it gets there.   It will be competitive though.

Most Suns fans I know would rather see the Jazz than Clippers.
