Write-ups be damned!

Greatest NBA moment or game
1 - Mo Cheeks helps sings the anthem
2 - Wilt's Quin Double 1968
3 - Magic Returns for ASG
4 - Lebron to South Beach
5 - DrJ wins 1st Slam Dunk
6 - Kobe 81 Point Game
7 - Ray Allen saves LeBron's bacon
8 - 1976 PHX/BOS 3OT game
9 - Derek Fisher 0.4 Finals
10 - Bird steals the ball!
11 - Jordan "The Shot"
12 - Willis Reed Finals
13 - Magic in 1980 NBA Finals
14 - 1992 "Dream Team"
15 - Wilt's 100 Point Game
16 - Jordan's Final Shot as Bull

I had Wilt at number 1 forever and ever and ever. Everyone knows that stat, everyone!* But to have the greatest** with an all-time greatest moment... Jordan's last dance clinches the 16 points. The Dream Team is a huge sentimental favorite of mine. I was six and DEMANDED that we collect every cup from McDonald's so I could then go find cards of the players and look up their stats.

*the quintuple double? not so much tbh.

**maybe. I don't really care. 1a and 1b. whatevs.

I may be doing Dr J a grave disservice. The birth of Air Jordan and Vinsanity 2000 were greater dunk contests, fight me.

I've got MLB ranked. Going to give myself 24 hours to wield the English language, because baseball has always been my first love (even if it has fallen by the wayside as I grew older).

Regardless of word count, I will post tomorrow.

I picked it, and realistically, I could see it as high as your #9, but not higher.

Good job, though.

Greatest all-round analysis and rankings

Preamble: While not rated any more heavily, this to me seems like the most significant category in this draft. It’s also probably the most subjective. I’ve given this my best thought but frankly struggled with this more than the other categories I’ve done. It has been a joy though learning more about the athletes I knew for one sport but not for others.

Criteria:

1.       Number of sports played and ease of transition (most weight). Note: there’s a tier of guy who were the best ever at their particular craft, but I could find no evidence that they excelled at other sports.

2.       Excellence in each sport played (more weight).

3.       General sentiment/legendary status (less weight) – this is perhaps the most flimsy/subjective of factors, but admittedly there was a guy or two on her I’ve never heard of. While I don’t know everything about sports, I’ve followed them my entire life and if I haven’t heard of the person that’s not a good sign.

4.       Entertaining and inspirational play (less weight) – Generally to be used as a tiebreaker, I am going to give slight consideration to just how ####### awesome the athlete was to watch.

Very surprising omissions: None – a lot of the athletes were probably more wisely taken in other categories. Ali, Jordan, Pele, Phelps all would have ranked high on this list but wouldn’t have breached the top tier I don’t think so credit to the drafters.

Somewhat surprising omission – Allen Iverson. I mean, he’s like the rich-man’s Charlie Ward. I named a tier after him. Crazy good QB. Russell Wilson as well. Roman Sebrle probably deserved consideration as the greatest decathlete ever since . Lionel Canacher is known as the “Canadian Jim Thorpe” and would have been top ten on this list. Dan O’Brien possibly deserved consideration and Herschel Walker would have been a top ten choice. Joe Mauer is a poor-man’s Dave Winfield but I drafted him as a catcher. Rich Froning is probably as good of a pick as Mark Allen.

Note: my pick was Jim Thorpe. I think he’s the greatest athlete ever and was number one on my board going into this draft. When Bo went before me, I opted to go Ali with the thought Thorpe would fall and he did.  I seriously contemplated punting my top tier or making a poll but was told to man up and just rank them, so I did.  Nonetheless, other than just knowing Wikkid’s choice, I ranked these blind to the drafter and to the order taken.

Tier One (greatest athletes ever):

1.       (16 points) Jim Thorpe – Played both professional football and baseball. Excelled the most at football where he won the collegiate national championship playing 4 different positions and went on to play pro football until he was 41. He also was a good lacrosse player in college and wrestled and played basketball. However, what sets him apart from Bo and Brown is that he easily won gold medals in the Olympics in the pentathlon and decathlon – two events designed to bring out the best all-around track and field athletes. Could Bo and Brown have done the same? Perhaps. But Thorpe did it and I genuinely don’t know what sport he couldn’t excel at. He’s the best all-around athlete to ever grace this planet.

2.        (15 points) Jim Brown – He’s without much of a doubt the greatest lacrosse player ever and he’s in the argument for best football player ever (I tend to lean Rice or Brady but undoubtedly Brown is in the argument). In high school he earned 13 letters across five different sports. He edges out Bo because he was slightly better at football than Bo (though they both had short careers so who knows) and he was better at lacrosse than Bo was at baseball.

3.       (14 points) Bo Jackson – the flame that burns twice as bright burns twice as short. The guy who was best at playing two of the major sports, injury shortened what could have been such legendary careers in both – and may have put him atop these rankings.

4.       (13 points) Babe Didrikson Zeharias – She’s hands down the greatest female athlete to ever live and deserves to be in this tier. She was a great basketball player and golfer and medaled in track and field at the Olympics. For ####s and gigs she also played billards, baseball, roller-skating, field hockey, bowling, diving, sewing, and probably any other sport some overconfident male challenged her at. And she did it all in an era when women were discouraged from playing sports (she was rejected from getting her PGA tour card despite qualifying).

Tier Two (stud athletes who happen to choose baseball):

5.       (12 points) Jackie Robinson – Obviously known for his excellence on the diamond and what he did for breaking the color-barrier, but he was also a great college football player and track and field star.

6.       (11 points) Dave Winfield – Was drafted to play in four major league sports (MLB, NBA, ABA, and NFL) – a record. He chose baseball and excelled for years making the HOF.

Tier Three (Track and field stars that dominated other sports)

7.       (10 points) Bob Hayes – Answered the question of “what if Usain Bolt could play football?” before it was even asked.

8.       (9)Rafer Johnson – A great decathlete (won numerous golds and set world records in the 1950s) who also happened to start on a John Wooden-led NCAAB team. Turned down a football scholarship.

Tier Four (Allen Iverson All-stars):

9.       (8 points) Charlie Ward – Heisman winner who chose to play in the NBA and had a solid, lengthy career. He was also drafted to play professional baseball. Love this pick as he wasn’t great/legendary at a particular sport but definitely could have played professionally in several of them.

10.   (7 points) Danny Ainge – Great collegiate and NBA player but also played three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays at 2B. Good golfer as well. You can just tell he’s good at whatever he does.

11.   (6 points) Kyler Murray – While he’s a bit young for these rankings, I cannot ignore that he’s the only athlete to ever be drafted in the first round of two major sports.

12.   (5 points) Joe Thomas – My initial thought was “how did this guy not go as an offensive lineman?” but after review this was a sneaky-good pick. He’s obviously one of the most durable offensive linemen to ever play football but he’s now the reigning Titan Games champion and has totally transformed himself.

Tier four (great at one really athletic event)

13.   (4 points) Daley Thompson - One of the greatest decathletes ever, and certainly the greatest from the UK. However, I could find no evidence that he played other sports. He gets the top of this tier because of the wide range of athletic talents the decathlon requires.

14.   (3 points) Mark Allen – The greatest endurance athlete ever and probably greatest triathlete, I struggle to see him being able to compete at other sports where more than just simply being in crazy good shape is required.

15.   (2 points) Eddy Merckx – Probably the greatest ever cyclist, I can’t analyze him much differently than Allen or Thompson and he rates lower as he just did one thing (cycling) versus three things and ten things.

Tier Five (I can’t smell what you’re cooking)

16.   (1 point) Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – Yeah, he played some college football and he’s super fit and wrestled, but he actually grew up in the same high school conference as yours truly and wouldn’t have even been considered a top athlete in high school. He’s listed as an “actor” on his Wikipedia page before anything even athletic. Brock Lesnar would have been the far better pick if one is following the line of thinking that I assume this drafter was.

Very well done.

damn that one hurt.  I had a good run.
Out of curiosity what was your thought process with the pick? I read about the guy and he sounds like a hell of a cyclist but I struggled to find what was "all-around" about him.

honestly i don't really remember.  it was very late in the draft and i had kind of punted on the category.  i considered moving Deion over and selecting another cornerback, but figured he was guaranteed better number where he was.

Deion probably would have been top ten - but agree he was likely better value at corner.

What was your thought process with that pick?
well, it was somewhat mid to late, and all the big/obvious names were gone, so more or less an out of the box pick. I felt the Rock was simply more "athletic" then Lesner or similar-type guys. I was not expecting anywhere beyond bottom five with the pick, and knew I could easily take a 1. I was going to pick someone like Jackie Chan or whatnot, but in a lot of discussion, "multiple sports" seemed to be the criteria (which, considering it was a sports draft, makes sense).

@Zow where would you have placed Bob Gibson? Played with Harlem Globetrotters, very good hitter, is phenomenal defensively despite the fact he was practically falling off the mound with his hat coming off after he threw a pitch.

Probably better off as a SP I suppose.

Probably in the third tier.

I looked at a bunch of online rankings and Gibson was consistently in the top 25.

My thoughts on judging these. I really would have preferred it to have been split up as follows:

Greatest baseball game or play
Greatest football game or play
Greatest basketball game or play

Greatest big 3 off-field moment - in my mind, it's much easier to compare LeBron's Decision to the Yankees trading Ruth
Greatest other sport moment - big catchall. Could see the likes of Olympic or NCAA tournament heroics, big upsets, etc.

Alrighty then, baseball.

This was basically impossible. Major League Baseball has such a storied history; it was America's fn pastime. Based on your age, one's opinion of the greatest moments are wildly subjective.

Methodology: lolololololololololololololololol

Finally, I stumbled upon something that helped me focus, and actually served me quite well for basketball too. I took to randomizing 1-16 points for each selection and justifying the ensuing list. From that point on, a small amount of clarity ensued. Here we stand.

I don't have write-ups, but I do have notes. Notable undrafted moment that I think might crack 10 points: Cal Ripken becomes baseball's Iron Man.

Greatest MLB Moment or Game

1    Derek Jeter Ball Flip - feels pretty fair being the second-highest rated defensive play
2    It Gets By Buckner! - this does not count as a defensive play; it's the curuururrrurrurrrse!~~~!@11`
3    2004 End of Red Sox Curse - The Cubs are my team...
4    2016 Cubs win WS - ...so I gave them an extra point.
5    Curt Flood Free Agency - see below. important, but I couldn't rate it higher
6    Ruth traded to Yanks - is this really greatness? it's like, "impactful" and so yeah I guess, but it falls short of what I consider great
7    Willie Mays Catch - I struggled with this one so much. Everything about this play is awesome. Feels like I'm robbing Willie here, but what can ya do.
8    Carlton Fisk WS HR 1975 - wave it fair! Top 5 in "greatest baseball gifs"
9    Gehrig Farewell - powerful stuff
10    Mazeroski Walkoff - Kids recite circumstances like this all the time, "world series, game 7, bottom of the ninth... home run to win it!"
11    1998 HR Chase - asterisks be damned. I was 12 and this was magic.
12    Don Larsen Perfect Game - single-most impressive game performance evah?
13    Shot Heard Around the World - the importance of this broadcast isn't lost on many
14    Kirk Gibson walk-off HR - this is THE home run
15    Aaron Breaks HR record - and this was the home run king
16    Jackie Robinson Breaks Barrier - even before the 2020 protests, this was number 1 (of these picks)

I will clarify for you since I am sure Getz is trying to assign the point values properly.  The numbers are the ranks (not the points received).  So something like Curt Flood actually gets 12 pts for the contest.  (I need it this way to catch Zow……..hahahah)

Going into the "Moment" categories I saw them different than most and pulled the trigger early for baseball and football as I thought the meaning of the item would rate really high for the importance to the sport.  However, as I thought about it more as the draft went on (an saw where these picks were leaning) I can see where that wasn't necessarily in the spirit of the category.  It worked out well for one (AFL/NFL merger) and not so good in the other (Flood & Free Agency).

Overall great job in what was a really hard thing to do.  I really liked your write ups for the football version as it showed your personal connection which I think is the only way to judge these moments.

OK,

We are down to 8 cats left.   ZaZale has told me the two soccer will be done soon.

I'll be doing the final six cats.  Later today, I will be randomly entering the choices for all six on my spreadsheet.  And then I will do my usual analysis to come up with the rankings. There is no way I'm going to know who picked who when I process these.

I'm going to post all six when I'm done at the same time.

OTB had two of these to judge, but he has not been on the board since June 15.  Don't know what happened there, but he has left the board for over a year before. So I'm just going to do them.

Happy 4th to all!

Called shot still 16 in my book. 😉
As discussed way back ... taking Ruth's Called Shot was a risk. Could have been way up high due to being a great legend, or #16 because the judge could call it out for being apocryphal.

I am a little surprised no one of us 16 tabbed it, but I do understand the individual decisions to leave it on the shelf.

This is the MEN'S SPORTS - Greatest soccer team category CONTINUED

Right, so I decided that a mathematical formula to measure between national and club teams and between eras is a mistake and would take so long to get statistics on the 200 players I would have to count that I just went on how I felt about the teams and their relative domination. Any more deliberation on these teams and I would just be way overthinking it so I am just going to give the team, a few star players, their best result and maybe a sentence or two (or more).

10) 2014 GERMANY  7 POINTS

Key players: Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller, Phillip Lahm, Toni Kroos, Bastian Schweinsteiger

Key match: 2014 FIFA World Cup semifinal at Brazil 7-1

No team in World Cup history has absolutely humiliated another on their home soil like Germany 7-1 Brazil. Mario Götze's winner was pretty good, too, but he's about to be released on a free transfer by Dortmund, isn't that crazy? Oh yeah and Miroslav Klose sets the World Cup goals record with 16 in all his World Cups.

9) 2010 SPAIN  8 POINTS

Key players: Iker Casillas, Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, David Villa, Carles Puyol

Key match: 2010 FIFA World Cup final vs the Netherlands 1-0 aet

Perhaps the pinnacle of defensive and offensive creativity, this was Spain's middle tournament victory with European Championships on either side in 2008 and 2012, and their first ever World Cup win. They won all 4 of their World Cup knockout games 1-0, with Iniesta's 116th minute goal against the Netherlands in the final being the latest winner in World Cup history.

8 ) 2006 ITALY  9 POINTS

Key players: Fabio Cannavaro, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Francesco Totti, Gianluca Zambrotta, Luca Toni, Gianluigi Buffon, Alessandro del Piero, Daniele de Rossi

Key match: 2006 FIFA World Cup final vs France 1-1 (5-3 on penalties)

I unironically think this team is actually ####### crazy but we might be talking about 2006 France had Zinedine Zidane not headbutted Marco Materazzi. A 7th minute final Zidane penalty and a Cristian Zaccardo own goal were the only balls to get by Buffon this whole tournament. It helps when your backline consists of 2006 Ballon d'Or winner Cannavaro and runner up Buffon.

7) 1971/72 AJAX  10 POINTS

Key players: Johan Cruyff, Piet Keizer, Johan Neeskens, Barry Hulshoff, Arie Haan, Gerrie Muhren

Key match: 1972 European Cup final vs Internazionale 2-0

Yes, you've heard the "total football" mantra before. Fluidity from defense to attack and back the way the world had never seen, players could exchange positions and play with the awareness required to win 3 successive European Cup finals. Cruyff was the attacking brainchild of all this, but he would end up leaving the year after for Barcelona to reunite with the coach that started it all for Ajax in 1965 in Rinus Michels. Their strength was being able to break down any defense with fluid movement, destroying strict man marking systems that had not changed in European soccer in decades.

6) 1974 WEST GERMANY  11 POINTS

Key players: Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Josef Maier, Paul Breitner, Berti Vogts, Uli Hoeneß, Rainer Bonhof, Jupp Heynckes

Key match: 1974 World Cup final vs the Netherlands 2-1

Well this is one defense that what is basically the previously mentioned Ajax team couldn't break down. Literally the whole back line except Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck finished with votes in the 1974 Ballon d'Or, Beckenbauer the 1972 and 1976 winner and 1974 and 1975 runner up, Breitner and Vogts were all in the top 10. Have we mentioned Gerd Müller?

Fun fact: of the top 14 players in 1974 Ballon d'Or voting, only 1 was not from a country that either was West Germany or a team that they beat in the 1974 World Cup.

Another fun fact: imagine playing for either West or East Germany in 1974 and GETTING DRAWN INTO THE SAME GROUP. Although this group held matches in West German occupied West Berlin, they played each other in Hamburg, where East German star Jurgen Sparwasser scored a late winner.

5) 1998/99 MANCHESTER UNITED  12 POINTS

Key players: David Beckham, Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke, Jaap Stam, Ryan Giggs, Peter Schmeichel

Key match: 1999 Champions League final vs Bayern Munich 2-1

This was the team and the match that clinched the treble (3 competition wins in a season for a club team), the first time and English team had done so. They were drawn in the group of death in the Champions League with Danish winners Brondby, Spanish winners Barcelona and German winners Bayern Munich who they would later play in the final. They finished 2nd in the group behind Bayern, and beat Italian powerhouses Inter and Juventus to reach the final. They were down 1-0 in the final until second half stoppage time where a poorly struck Ryan Giggs shot at the edge of the box was poked at by Teddy Sheringham which found the bottom corner. 2 minutes later a David Beckham corner was swung in and met by Sheringham across to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's foot to poke it into the roof of Bayern's net. The goals were scored 1:41 apart. By the end of the season, Manchester United had become the world's richest soccer team, and the most valuable and internationally recognized sporting brand worldwide.

part 3 tonight i promise
