2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (1 Viewer)

If anyone is getting short shrift in the media right now, its the Heat.  #1 seed going for the gentleman's sweep tonight at home and its on NBA TV?  Then they sit home and wait for the mangled corpse of whoever comes out of the 4-5 matchup. Playing  some of the best defense in the league right now and it seems no one gives them a prayer to win this?

Now, as I understand it you still have two wishes left on that monkey's paw, but you might want to think about not using them.

I don't understand this reference, even being familiar with the story, but am giving the comment a heart because it sounds cool and is probably clever in a way that escapes me atm.

Pat Bev doing the too small on Ja was the beginning of the end. Idiot.
Yeah, Towns did a shush to the crowd when he hit a 3 to go up like, 13 with 9 minutes left or something stupid like that too. They aren't a smart team right now. They're talented, play hard, and play well together, hoping next season they get smarter.

Watching the game, I'd say that about both teams.  They both play "young"; lots of effort and athleticism coupled with bad decisions and silly mistakes.

Don't think either team can beat Golden State, but hope I'm wrong.

1. Teams that play this way are usually boring. No one talks about boring. Trust me, I know boring I am a Piston fan. You are going to have to enjoy it yourself until they make a finals. Assuming they close out Utah this is the first series this team has won with Luka. Let's hold off on the respect card.

2. This version of the Mavs should never be mentioned in the same sentence as the 2015 Warriors.

5. Things are breaking for Dallas, but I still think they are in the second tier of playoff teams that not only have to play extremely well to make a run to the finals, but have to get lucky too.
All 3 of those things were able to be said in 2011, just replace Luka with Dirk.

Ugh.  Such a terrible terrible terrible decision on the defensive end.
Yep. Young and dominately athletic gonna be young and dumb. I understand what he was trying to do and if it had worked you're in OT. Even though it didn't work Ja had to make a pretty tough shot against 9 foot wingspan Jarred Vanderbilt. Fun game. Wish it had ended differently.

Fun game indeed.  Loved the execution of the bounce pass and 3 by Edwards to tie it.  Was hoping for OT but yeah, lack of leadership definitely hurts the Wolves late.   Morant is something else.

So Victor Oladipo is starting and dominating. If this is 2017 someone send me a sign.
>>Oladipo: "A year ago today, I was waiting for my next surgery. I was sitting in a dark room by myself and just broke down, not because I quit, but because I was at the lowest point I could be at. Now God has put me in this position today. I made the most of it."<<

Assuming Butler and Lowry come back, the Heat bench is Oladipo, Herro, Robinson, Martin, Dedmon.

It will be interesting to see what the Wolves do with DLo. His deal expires after next season and even though he's definitely not a max player he may be for the Wolves. He had a really good year and, shockingly, has become the defensive QB for this team. He's one of the few high BBIQ players they have (outside of his shot selection). Assuming KAT is offered and accepts his super max and Ant is offered and accepts his max rookie extention that's a big outlay.

As a non desirable NBA destination (hoping the KAT ANT combo can change that), it would be prudent to overpay to keep players when you can if they're worth it. He's also KAT's bestie. And not giving him $30 million doesn't mean you get to spend that on free agents, but in this case maybe it's worth getting rid of him to spend that on Vanderbilt, McDaniels, Naz, and Nowell.

It really underscores how important it is to win when you can. This group has a ton of potential, but the financials may be as such that they won't be able to reach it. In any case, next year when KAT is on a Max and Not Super Max, ANT is on his rookie deal, DLo is still here, and the depth/bench is affordable (the only guys no longer under contract next year are Prince, Layman, and Okogie) is a HUGE year for this franchise.

All 3 of those things were able to be said in 2011, just replace Luka with Dirk.
Not at all. That Dallas team had better players, a better coach and loads of experience. All the core guys had been to the finals before or to the conference finals for the most part.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who appreciated the level of difficulty on that assist. That pass was something else.

Small market teams need to start somewhere, so they need to get a blue-chip player from somewhere and hope they can play well enough as a team to attract a decent second tier free agent. Now with two solid players, hopefully they can recruit a third and then they could become a legit contender.
Milwaukee Bucks:

- Hit the draft jackpot with Giannis (and he actually decided to STAY and SIGN long term in a small market)

- Draft steal in Middleton

- Jrue Holiday comes to town to join in the fun

- Bobby Portis takes lesser money to stay because he wants to continue winning and he gets all the fan love he could ever want

Bridges 💪 A clinic on both ends tonight.

Campaign :towelwave:

Cam Johnson :towelwave:

Finally some production from the supporting players
For sure! Bridges couldn't miss. He kilt us. When we weren't killin' ourselves. :wall:  Unfortunately I stayed awake for this one. Frustrating to watch. We just didn't have the extra zing. Had a bad feeling when NOBODY was making their easy shots early. Still battled back and were within 7 in the final minutes before the few trash time buckets at the very end.  Loved the boos for Alvarado every time he touched the ball.  He's in their headspace.   CJ was cold. BI was cold. JV was meh. I was hoping they might get Trey Murphy going from the 3 point line. But alas. Back to the Blender tomorrow. I expect it to be a dogfight. :boxing:

OK, i've watched 3-4 games of the the Grizz/Wolves series and i have yet to see a single player's performance appear to be shaped, framed, edited or enhanced by coaching. beyond the total pickup nature of the play, the inability to rein in KAT (at least get him his plays on O, so you can call him in on his excesses/lapses/totally insufficient humanity), and never get him or Ant a shot that is a function of purposeful ball/body movement; on the other side, JJJ dont have as much offensive skills as defensive, but he does have some - why then is it possible to assert that he and Ja have yet to be introduced?

which leads me to my HOT TAKE OF THE DAY: if i'm forming a team, i take Ant ahead of Ja. Ja put on that bravura performance in the last few minutes because his performance in the 1st 40 made it necessary. beautiful skills (cept i dont like the stroke or vision), always gonna be an ungovernable sum##### a la Iverson/Irving. Edwards, on the other hand - perfect bod, stroke, hops, sub par court vision but he's never gonna be up top anyway, but above all humility, eagerness. Nobody's teaching him the game he appears to want to play as the closest effigy of LeBron James that this game currently has. nufced

This.

This matchup is a series of running up and down trying to out-highlight the opponent.  If either team had an ounce of discipline and structure, they'd be in the 2nd round by now.

Ja > Ant in pretty much every possible metric.

Ja > Ant in pretty much every possible metric.
beyond adjusting for the fact that Morant gets to do almost everything he wants to do and Edwards gets less than half of that, and that metrics guys generally disagree with me and i dont understand them well enough to argue and empirically know my evals play out better, i wish i could find a bet that would put some career spotlight on our disagreement. ASG appearances wont work because Ja will naturally get more attention. I believe Ant is far more likely to be on a championship team than Ja but he'll need a coach and there are currently about 8 of those, so who knows? if you think of others, lemme know. i been taking stats guys' money (for charity, of course) for decades.

Can’t you guys just enjoy fun basketball? If you want structure watch the Celtics or some college team like Vermont. I’ll take Ja and Ant dunking on dudes and Beverly making the too small motion right before Ja scores 13 in a row.

You don't say....

Unfortunately, their efficiency has led to a lull in activity,  so I'm stuck watching the dreck that is Memphis/Minnesota for a week.

ETA: I mean, heck, sometimes we have to watch Independence Day or Predator Vs. Alien...it can't all be The Godfather.

Middleton was drafted by the Pistons and played for them for a year before being traded to the Bucks.

Jrue was traded as well. It was a massive gamble that paid off, but the Bucks paid a lot to get him.

No you can't have him back! :pokey:
You'll enjoy him, mostly, but he's going to drive you crazy in spurts.  He isn't the most consistent guy in the world and I play better defense than he does, but he'll have moments of pure greatness where he can't miss......

......until the next quarter starts.

Still reeling from the fact that Portland got literally NOTHING back for him.  Neat trade.
