2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (3 Viewers)

And the signing of Drummond was inspired, in its way. Although the post aint where it's at no mo, Embiid makes the Sixers a post-based team and now they dont have to change that when his knees are seized or whatever.....

The 76ers are in the luxury tax zone this season. Drummond signed for the veteran's minimum, which is the DVE, which is an exception tier contract. He was signed as roster filler as DVE's are easy to replace at any point during the season and the league itself covers about half the cash cost of the contract ( to incentive teams to sign vested veterans over rookies)

Signing a 2nd round pick instead, for example, would force Philly to pay out of it's taxpayer's mid level exception. The Warriors were stuck in this problem for a very long time, they had to split their MLE into bite sized chunks to try to fill the roster around their top heavy salaried players.

The value was getting a veteran who was a known quantity, even with all his flaws, over an untested rookie who would be a deep flier at this point. Drummond knows Embiid needs to take off 20-30 games a year with injuries/dings at this point so he's guaranteed that many starts which helps his profile for FA at some point.

Drummond is a low BBIQ player. He's a horrible decision maker and has no common sense on the court. He has horrible shot selection for a big man which makes close to no sense in fundamental basketball 101.  All his coaches have wanted to stab themselves in the eyes over Drummond's inability to just take basic simple shots near the rim. He's an elite rebounder but that has large diminishing returns in the modern game. Fighting over rebounds all the time doesn't let you reset your defense fast enough. Drummond can pick up a quick 8 rebounds just from one series where he's clanging a dumb shot again and again and is muscling other players for the put back.

Drummond is a journeyman at this point for a reason. He likely shaved 10 years off of Stan Van Gundy's life for a reason. ( How SVG didn't eat a gun having to deal with Drummond and that nimwit Reggie Jackson at the same time is beyond me)  He's a "brand name" that doesn't actually do very much most of the time to help you do the little things to win actual hard fought basketball games. Occasionally he'll have some spurts but he's still a low BBIQ player doing low BBIQ things. It's no wonder the Lakers sign him because LBJ has a habit of demanding old rotten milk type former "brand name" guys to fill his rosters. Every roster that LBJ is on has roster filler that is a waste of space and function.

What helps Drummond in Philly is Matisse Thybulle is criminally underrated. He does so much to change the complexion of their energy and defense. He's not in the Draymond Green class of impact but he makes Embiid and yes even Drummond's life so much more easier. It's too bad your beloved Celtics had Thybulle in their hands and just traded him off. Boston would be in so much of a better place with Thybulle on their roster.

Drummond is a net negative fringe roster guy at this point but he's on a team that will player synergy level type of ball to cover up some of why he's a journeyman in the first place. It was a cap decision more than a "Want Drummond" decision.

It's near 2AM and the bar is about to close, you take home the best of the rest of the chicks left. At that point it's likely just being happy for company with straight teeth when the pickings at that slim. There's a difference between "inspired" and a team that is functionally locked out of most options because they are in the luxury tax zone. The same way you don't see the difference is the same thinking that the Celtics made when they traded off Thybulle for no apparent reason at all.

is this the part where we don't hear from Lebron.....?

he usually has a lot to say about everything else and enjoys expressing his opinions on almost everything.... apparently about everything but his transgressions....and yet the suck up media will give him a hall pass and let him off the hook while he cowers and hides in the corner....can't wait for the eventual interview where he dismisses it and says something like "the past is the past, I'm moving on"....

Enes Kanter is ripping LBJ apart over his lifetime contract with Nike and Nike's relationship with China. I.E. child slave labor from genocide making those signature kicks that sell for big dollars. I recognize this is the FFA and not the PSF but this area of the NBA is unavoidable at this point.

Kanter ripping LBJ is being suppressed in the American sports media ( So networks can keep Nike happy) but not in the international media markets. The NBA and it's owners desperately want global expansion of the game and worldwide fandom.

Adam Silver apparently asked Kanter to talk in private and am quite sure he probably offered Kanter whatever he wanted to stop talking to the press. But LBJ and Nike put themselves in this position. There was the "More Than Just An Athlete" ad campaign used to gloss over the controversy regarding so much social justice that bled into all aspects of the game in 2020 and drove away tons of fans.

Silver can literally do nothing to Kanter. If Kanter gets cut right now, it looks like league pressure for retaliation for saying things that hurt the NBA's profit margins. It asks the ugly question on why the NBA pushes social justice so hard in one area but avoids open genocide when it rakes in dollars with NBA China and Tencent.

If the league did not suspend LBJ or gave Beef Stew an extended suspension, it would send the public message that LBJ is operating on a different set of rules. He is operating on a different set of rules, Klutch Sports is his company, everyone knows it, Rich Paul is just a thin front for that, and every time LBJ talks about other players on other teams, like he did with AD to get AD to force a trade to the Lakers, it's just outright tampering.

Of course Nike and Silver and the other owners want LBJ silent. He's made the NBA countless fans. But he's done his part to drive away droves of fans as well. Nike does not want LBJ to be associated with the "face of complicit genocide"

All of this factors into why LBJ was suspended in the first place and why the length of the suspensions mattered. If you have the most marketable athlete in the NBA with the perception that he'll fight American players and only will fight for CCP dollars, then that's really ugly media optics you can't fix.

Four in a row for the Wolves!

I'm still expecting the bottom to fall out, and I'm not expecting much vs. Miami on Wednesday, but if they HAVE progressed to the point where they can consistenly beat the bad teams that's a huge step forward.

Dave's farewell speech.

I used to go to Knicks games all the time when I was in Brooklyn long ago. I would sit near the same people usually and got to know a few people. One guy would talk about fairweather fans, like channeling a Dave Moss from Glengarry Glen Ross.

The team loses and it's the sky is burning and the team should gut check reactively trade everyone like Larry Brown just took over the time.

The teams wins and there's ticker tape parade in front of every other basketball fan.

The "Dave Moss Fan"

The functional problem with the Timberwolves is they are a top heavy team. Houston tried this with Barkley/Drexler/Olajuwon then again but in a lesser format with Barkley/Pippen/Olajuwon.  Obviously KAT is nowhere near Olajuwon and DLo would never be mistaken for a higher BBIQ type player like Drexler.

Top heavy teams can operate with close to no practical margin for error. Look at the Knicks this season. Julius Randle carried much of that offense last year. But look at how his iso induced/worst shades of Melo are bleeding out now. Bad tunnel vision, bad decision making, refusing to pass, refusing to move efficiently off the ball, chucking up with poor shot selection, sulking while not getting back on defense. The Knicks can't afford to have Randle self implode. But he only played well enough to get a fat contract. Which is why the Lakers and Pelicans just let him go. They knew exactly what Randle was all about. When the crowds were gone, he thrived some. When the crowds returned, he had to be a hero baller. Which is why he wilted in the playoffs facing the Hawks. Bigger the stage, the smaller fair weather types become.

Minnesota has razor thin margin for error. The trade that cost them Wiggins but more importantly the pick that became Kuminga is a death shot for this team. I can see needing to get out from under Wiggins given what Wiggins was and became and self inflicted on that roster. But losing Kuminga is going to be devastating. The argument could be made that a better GM could have send something less than the Kuminga pick to get DLo. The Wolves got the inferior player and gave up a critical blue chip draft pick to do it.

The sky is falling! No, wait, this team is like Andy Dufrense from Shawshank Redemption and hope burns eternal! No, stop that again, the sky is really falling!

Dave Moss types aren't real fans. Real fans love their team through the good and the bad alike. Andy believed he was a free man even when there were bars and walls and guards all around him.

Anthony Edwards is very likely to force his way off this team eventually. Once he signed with Klutch Sports, it was inevitable that he would be a Laker at some point soon. Rich Paul ran a Pro Day for Edwards and others that broke the unwritten rules for agents and he just didn't care. Klutch just doesn't care, they openly poach clients and tamper and do whatever they want because they know the league will back down because LBJ is the defacto owner of Klutch.

Gooseman in the purple and gold at some point. I feel for Minnesota fans for that. That's an ugly part of how this league operates. Big market teams just treat small franchises like it's some kind of Triple A prospect development pit stop for them. I'm not sure the Dave Moss fans will be able to handle that reality.

Does anyone picture some of these posts being typed with tears streaming down the face of the poster?  It's unreal how in their heads LeBron James is.    I don't even like the guy that much anymore after the BS he pulled earlier this year with the "you're next" tweet at a cop (who had saved lives by shooting a woman who was attempting attack others with a knife), but the irrational hatred some still have for the guy is just hysterical.

It's unreal how people twist like a pretzel trying to defend the intentional cheap shot he laid on Stewart. Lebron getting only one game for that is a joke.

thread titles are a pain in the ### to edit on mobile. This isn’t the New York Times.
I like it as is.  Kind of like a minor flaw in a beautiful diamond, it makes it more authentic.

It’s truly wild. He’s gonna get bodied in the nba.
I was talking about this with some friends last night. Is he really gonna be the #1 pick? I know he is amazingly skilled and is the next evolution in "a big man with guard skills", but how long is it going to take until his body can handle the NBA? The way things are today can a terrible team afford to wait on a #1 pick for a couple of years before he contributes?

Porzingas was super skinny as a rookie and managed to contribute. It didn’t take him that long to bulk up a bit.

this is more then just this. US has a questionable relationship with Turkey who attacked an Armenian region recently and President Erdgon wanted to start another Armenian Genocide a part of history never talked about anywhere and I only know a lot about do to my Armenian side of the family. It's disgusting the relationship the US has with Turkey and Kanter is wanted in Turkey to be jailed for speaking out against a dictator government that commits human rights violations against their own people. A few of the Turkish Presidents patrol guard when he came to the US a few yrs ago attacked Armenian protesters on White House property and the US didn't do a dam about it.

Kanter literallly has an FBI guard everywhere he goes as the Turkish Government will try to even kidnap him to bring him back to Turkey. No surprised by the media here downplaying this since they downplayed Tulsi Gabbard throughout the DNC race because she was against the government elite. There's a lot of political stuff moving here that people don't understand or know about the US would like to keep it that way

I'd love to see the faces of some posters who defend such blatant cheap shots by Lebron the out and out glad handing the NBA gives him and trying to defend his poor sportsmanship when he doesn't get his way. I mean no-one can apparently criticize the guy without his glad handing fans coming into defend him. His fans need to realize he doesn't care about them he just cares about their money. You aren't getting any special treatment from him for being his biggest defender.

It's honestly amazing how many people I know he use to defend the guy and now hate him because of some of his antics later in his career. How can Lebron push social justice when he doesn't say a dam thing about what's happening in CHINA? Thats a hypocrite at its finest. Do as I say not as a do. Lebron would make a terrific politician

How good do you guys think Shaq and Webber would have been together if the Magic don’t make that trade? Could they have co-existed?

I used to think about this a lot. Penny in his early days was my favorite player ever so I’m good with it. Nobody could have predicted his injuries.

Saw that.  A truly terrible call as well.  Doesn’t matter, five in a row!!! Back to .500!!!
Lavine got called for a foul on a 3 tonight where he essentially tripled over a guy. Glad to see the NBA is pretty scared of CHI at least At least were relevant again.

They are looking at them like WTF did we do? Poor fans. What did they do yell that MJ and Wilt were better then him?
He needs to man up and tell us what they said.  Dont make some vague racial statement.  Grow up.  Its still insane he can simply go to the refs and throw people out.

I get throwing road fans out and such but unless it was like the UTAH fans or someone throwing something at you grow up.Also don't make #### up because the actual excuse is probably pathetic.

I said this in the King Richard thread someone got called for discrimination. Easier to charge the subject and make someone try and defend themselves then debate the actual issue  It says more about you then the person if discrimination really isn't involved. It's getting to the point where this guy cries wolf a lot and people just think he's soft

been saying for yrs Lebron wouldn't have lasted in the Mid 80s early 90s of the NBA if he's this soft. In fact most of this generation wouldn't have lasted

Fans sitting around the couple who were ejected said they kept making chicken noises "balk..balk..balk"  at James all game when he would be inbounding and running by until he could not take it anymore.  Seems kind of a chicken s*** way to get ejected.

I read that they said they hope his son Bronny dies in a car crash.

Even if they did, it's not like they can speak it into existence.  I'm amazed that after 18+ seasons in the league he can't just tune that #### out.  I saw a guy say on Twitter than Jordan would've wanted them to stay in the front row, would've drained 10 straight shots, and would've stared them down after each one.  He's not wrong.

An actual guy from Twitter said that?

Difference between todays players and those we grew up with. MJ was the type of guy you said to you can't do it and he'd go "oh yeah watch this then." I read somewhere that MJ's playing PG wasn't just because the Bulls needed a guy playing the point at the time and run the offense but MJ had heard people say he can't be a ball distributor. So he went out and had a 20 assist game. Heres his numbers through those games

Mike participated in the last 24 games of the season as a point guard and averaged 30.4 points, 10.7 assists, 9.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. This player also scored 12 triple-doubles

I was a big Lebron fan, but he seems to have really gone soft and become kind of a #### since going to the Lakers.

Lebron was always like this. It just took him going to a team a lot of people hate a lot for them to realize this. He's always been really soft and a little #####. I'm just glad a lot more people are realizing it now and not defending him as much.
