2021-22 NBA Thread: Bill Simmons furiously recording 2.5 hour long pod about how Boston is still better than Golden State (2 Viewers)

Jonathan Givoney was right on his Simmons right up. This dude has zero desire for completion. Just amazes me how many people defended this guy for yrs. Maybe it was tunnel vision of wanting the next superstar, maybe it was because he was on their team, favorite player they grew attracted too what have you. I'd have paid good money to watch what the likes of Bird/Magic/MJ etc and even Kobe would've done to this clown during their primes.

Ben gets a ton of blame but I think the 76ers do to for not saying no and coddling the kid for yrs because the team was worried if he did become the player they thought he could be, then he'd leave them and they'd be screwed, This is a good reminder why Organizations run the the team and players play. Same with the Lakers/Lebron situation. Allow your guys input but final say comes from the big suits upstairs.

Overall the warning signs and big red flags about this guy were there for yrs. I got destroyed by a lot of people for saying this dude was a fraud too.

how can such a jerkoff have no desire for completion?!

i been on Simmons longer than just about anybody and i been onto Simmons longer than just about anybody.

Ben Simmons is the best zone-defensive player i've ever seen (stipulating that many great man-defensive players may have done as well in zone)

as i have for years now, i am still asserting that Simmons is an austistic savant. because i was fascinated by his abilities, i'd keywatch him and he'd play little games with himself like testing his court vision by seeing how far he could get from the ball and still assert himself on a play. all sorts of things that suggest a lack of connectivity with his teammates as anything but gamepieces.

as i have for a year or so now, i am still asserting that someone on the spectrum gets to act hellahellahella different if they have an agent. i mean, the chief task of basketball agents for the last decade has been pushing exceptions, rider clauses, alienations from team & task based on status. what better enabler for perceptive disorders could a person have?!

these are not excuses. Ben Simmons is a complete jerkoff - he is down for that. basketball is giving him the chance for a real-life Being There celebrity existence that i find as telling for society as it is for him.

Really looking forward to Bucks/Celtics.  Has the makings of a great series, especially if Middleton is back.

Not to look ahead or anything, but I'm looking ahead to this one.  If Middleton and Robert Williams are both reasonably healthy (a big if), it could bring back memories of the late 80's - Bird, Parish, Ainge and DJ against Moncrief, Pressey, Cummings and Sikma.

Really like this Minnesota Memphis series a lot. A lot of young talent.

Agree, and really hate the NBA front office/ESPN/TNT for not featuring it more prominently. NBATV and a 10 PM eastern/9 central tip for two teams located in the central time zone is not a great way to promote two of the most exciting young players in the game.

Watching KD in this series, it becomes evident that he is no longer a young man.  A major achilles injury, the amount of deep playoff runs, a recent Olympic run and the minutes/years have once again proven that Father Time is undefeated.

What the Celtics are doing is wearing him down throughout the games and throughout the series.  His points and even shot attempts have gone down with each game as he just doesn't have the energy and will to fight through all of the hits he takes on each offensive posession.

As a player I HATED the guy that was just going to work hard to keep you from getting to where you wanted to go.  Even if you had a physical advantage (like KD does against everyone in the world but Giannis), the amount of effort it takes to utilize that advantage is unsustainable over multiple possessions.  Even though for one possession KD is ultimately unstoppable, over the course of multiple games you can make it so hard he doesn't even want to try.  In the 2nd half of game 3, that is what it looked like.  As long as the Celtics come out with energy to finish the job I don't see KD putting in the effort it would take to extend the series.

Those Bucks teams are my first basketball memories.  I would've been 10 years old or so.  Good times.

Not to mention the mental exhaustion from dealing with the nonstop drama from Kyrie, Harden, and now Simmons.

When the Bucks swept Boston in 1983, Larry Bird said "I've never been this embarrassed in my entire career. We embarrassed ourselves and I'll live with that the rest of my life." But the Celtics got revenge in the following years, including a sweep of the Bucks in the 1986 ECF. The following year is the one I remember - a 7 game war ending in the brutal Game 7 at the Garden.

That’s part of what made Jordan so unreal. He pushed himself so hard and was so competitive that it never mattered how much other teams banged on him he simply kept out working them. And of course it’s one reason why he added more muscle mass was because the Pistons and Knicks were beating him up so much that he knew he had to get bigger and stronger to keep winning.

Which is why the Celts won't be able to simply "outphysical" Giannis into submission the way they are with KD.

but they can use similar tactics - the same 1ondaball, 1ondabod, 1indeearea - to that by which they bottled-up KD to interrupt Anteaternintendo's stride. Stevens experimented with this in the past, which is why i was surprised he didnt grab Ojeleye (who the Bucks signed this yr entirely off his D on Giannis) when the Clips dropped him late in the season - you can let the man-on circle back after his first step so that another is at his 2nd step and be there to pick him up again for the Euro step and frustrate his action to the hoop. that's the trunk of his move-tree and the key to minimizing his damage

Yeah, but but he's grown by leaps and bounds as a facilitator.  If he can consistently make the right pass, this strategy will result in tons of open looks for Jrue/Wes/Bobby/Grayson/Pat and hopefully Khris.  The Nets don't have shooters like that.

there's a reason theyre the champs. you almost had me til you said "Wes"...

Boston in a half court set can slow down pretty much anybody. They won't be able to do much against Giannis in transition, as he is a freight train. But he may not be able to get the ball and do much with it (either shooting or facilitating) when the defense is set in half court. That's been part of the problem with the Nets and KD. He hasn't been able to get the ball inside the three-point line. Boston has been smothering him and he can't even get open to receive a pass. When Brooklyn has him bring the ball up, he gets swarmed as soon as he crosses mid court. Sure, Giannis is stronger and probably won't wilt or tire out, but he still has to be able to receive the ball and have time and space to maneuver.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  I love how the defending champs are being cast pretty much universally as underdogs.

Because there is 100's of years of data across all sports that show how difficult it is to repeat.
Sure, but that’s because winning every series necessary to win a title even if you are favorites is really difficult. But that doesn’t mean that a team shouldn’t be the favorite in every series.

ETA: though I think it should be pointed out that of all the major sports, it seems that repeating is most doable in the NBA.

I just looked on Spotrac to see what Simmons is making. You've got to be ####### kidding me.
Putting aside the everyone hates Simmons take -

I get the Nets needed to send Harden away but to inherit that Simmons contract is crazy.  Maybe they had a wink and nod agreement with him that he wouldnt have to play this year but Ive never seen a player as one of the center pieces for a mega trade never play due to "injury" - if his back was this beat up how did he pass a physical?  The whole think just stinks to high heaven - there has got to be a side deal or something or else Nets should be suing/terminating their doctors or filing charges against the 76ers/Simmons for sending damaged goods.  The fact that there is no stated concern is very strange to me.

With the 64 win Suns on the verge of losing their series with the Pellies, without looking any guesses what team holds the distinction currently for the most regular season wins to lose in Round 1?

(I thought it was obvious but guessed wrong)

I Love This Game.

I have 3 guesses, but will only guess one. The Sonics to the Nuggets with Mutumbo.

I'm assuming, unfortunately, the 67-win 2007 Mavericks hold this distinction. If not, maybe the Spurs had 67 wins in like 2011 when they lost to the Grizzlies? Thought they were only like 61 though so Mavs would hold over them.

If not, feels like it would have to be a team from pre-90s.

🤣

Figured you'd be the one to get it. I don't even remember that Golden State team that beat the Mavs that year 🤣

I only remember Dikembe clutching the basketball crying on the ground I think and was my guess. That Sonic team had 63 wins.

I bet you could blindly name more of the GSW players from 2007 than the Mavs. #### I can only name like 4 Mavs from that season and I am not only a big fan, but someone who has followed basketball extremely well for the last ~20 years.

Edit: I mean I could guess a bunch of Mavs too, but they could just as easily be guessed where you'd say "nope 2008-2010" or "nope, 2006 only" or "nope, 2005-2006 and also 2009-2012" lol

Let's see, 2007 warriors guesses:

Baron Davis

Mickael Pietrus

Jason Richardson

Kelenna Azubuike

Matt Barnes

Stephen Jackson

Monta Ellis

Al Harrington

Andres Biedrins

I'm sure I'm missing a big guy and chemistry man, but I think that's probably the full rotation for that series. And anyone looking at it today would think it was better than the Mavs roster. Dirk was unreal that year.

I couldn't.....only reason I could name Baron Davis/Stephen Jackson is because I read an article. I'd have probably said Steph (who wasn't even in the league yet). TBH Dirks the only one I'd probably be able to name (maybe Josh Howard if really thinking about it....but saw his name in the article I read).

I'm clueless about that time frame for either team. I'd be guessing like JJ Barea/maybe Finley returned? I can remember a lot more 90s stuff than 2000s

I hate "taking a charge." I say this as the scrappy white guy who often found ways to take a charge. It's not a basketball play. It's a higher chance of injury than most plays, and it ruins some of the most exciting potential plays.

It should not be that hard to adjudicate it out. "All block/charge calls will be blocking fouls if the defender is not both in legal guarding position AND attempting a basketball play. Covering your balls with your hands and letting yourself get hit is not a basketball play."

I don't know if you're correct or not on those guys but that's a good memory if you randomly remembered those guys. (Pietrus I know is one from the article I glanced over earlier)

I think Dampier, surely Josh Howard is right, Jason Terry was there. I didn't think Barea yet? He feels like a 2008-2020 kind of guy. But he could have been a rookie. I'd be extremely surprised to learn he got minutes in that series.

Guys who may or may not have been on the team: Eduardo Najera, Pops Mensah Bonsu, Antawn Jamison, Antoine Walker, Greg Buckner, James Singleton, Devin Harris part 1, Desegana Diop, Marquis Daniels, DJ Mbenga, Jerry Stackhouse, Mo Ager, Brandon Bass, Nick Fazekas, Devean George, Keith Van Horn...that's it for my guesses. I dare you to make a team of those guys in 2007 that we actually think should be favored in hindsight. Was a huge down year for the NBA. I think that was the East sucks, only good series was Spurs-Suns, LeBron's first finals year too?

The Marcus Smart charge in first quarter: ridiculous that we let that be a foul

The Blake Griffin charge just now: he's there, he in a defensive stance, he's playing defense, and Tatum runs him over. That's what a charge should be. Only that.

Sometimes basketball is simple. Every time down the floor at least one of three things happens for Boston:

1. Jayson Tatum touches the ball

2. Jaylen Brown touches the ball

3. A shot is WIDE open or a layup.

Whereas the Nets have multiple contested shots or turnovers on possessions where neither Irving nor Durant touches the ball. Idiotic.

Those were my other 2 guesses, but seemed to easy. That was another fun Golden State team. I remember coming home from work and my husband (bf at the time) and I would take like a 3 hour nap so we could wake up and watch that series and eat a dinner.

Too much hyperbole here. There are literally dozens of contracts that were/are just as bad.
Yes but only one that flaunts it in the face of the league. Guys can not live up to a contract or get hurt. Most guys don't just fake being injured and be fine with collecting a paycheck while embarrassing his team.

Boston is so good.  I'm glad they have to play Milwaukee next round.  That'll be wild.
it is crazy how Ime didn't get more love for Coach of the year, this current iteration of Boston vs. the one from the 1st half of the season couldn't be more different. he did something to get through to the entire team. i think there is still a talent gap between them and the top 2-3 teams, but they will be in every series

Smartest thing Van Gundy has said all night "Durant simply tried to stand up." Horrible offensive foul...and Smart looks like a sniper hit him in the cheek LOL.

This Boston team is easy to root for if your team is out of the playoffs. Share the ball, play great defense, and everyone does their part.

Read something that Ben/LeGM/Clutch might be angling for a trade to the Lakers in the off-season.

Sounds about right. Lebron just keeps embarrassing himself at this point. It's astounding how so many still defend some of his moves and such the last year or so. Lakers were a once proud franchise and within a year Lebron has turned them into a laughable circus. Kobe would be speaking out constantly against this if he were still around.
