2021 Buffalo Bills - Same as it ever was*** (2 Viewers)

Here are the current starting WRs for Buffalo's Week 1 opponent:

Robby Anderson
Charone Peake
ArDarius Stewart

So...things could be worse than they are in Buffalo!

I imagine that's what Beane was talking about when he said "This isn't just a short term thing, it's a long term thing too. He's a HOFer."

I still don't have a lot of excitement about this season, but I do like Beane and McDermott quite a bit and think that the two of them give the Bills their best chance to build something in a long time
Holy hell, he really said that?

I hope he was just doing a Trump impression.

I was actually hoping to see Treadwell. I wanted to see if he'd look good enough to win a starting spot in that travesty.

??? I think he's absolutely right. Not only does Boldin provide a decent #2, receiving option and great red zone threat for this year at a bargain price, you can't ask for a much better role model and example for a young receiver like Jones. Especially since their game is so similar.

So not only does Boldin provide a short term benefit with his play, he provides a longterm benefit from what he teaches the young receivers.

I misinterpreted him. For some reason I thought he was talking about signing Boldin for an extended contract.

Love the forcing the ball to Watkins. That's only about 3 years too late. Even on the incompletion it was a good call - the timing just got thrown off.

I've been loving the reports out of camp saying they've been working him a bunch in screens. Still unfathomable that the Bills didn't use him that way before.

This Yarbrough dude has been electric. Tore up training camp and had a really nice first half tonight. He may be this year's Lorenzo Alexander. If he plays like this during the season, the Buffalo D-line is going to be ridiculous, especially with Jerry Hughes back to his more natural position.

The O-line seems like a major concern though. Hopefully it will look better once Glenn is able to play.

I screamed these exact words at the TV. :lmao:

William had some nice holes to run through.

Seantrel Henderson was, once again, a turnstile. McDermott could cut him and pick up someone off the street that's better. I'm not hyperbolizing here. I'm amazed the guy still has a job.

Who hear is envisioning Watkins blowing up this season only to force the Bills to franchise him for '18 where he subsequently breaks his foot again in the off-season?

Just me?

I'd rather have Ricky Henderson!

@AdamSchefter  Aug 11

Eagles acquire CB Ronald Darby from Buffalo for WR Jordan Matthews and a 2018 third-round pick.

Bills have acquired CB E.J. Gaines and Rams 2018 second round pick for WR Sammy Watkins and Bills 2018 sixth round pick.

Are you F'ing kidding me?

I don't understand why the Bills moved or why the Rams traded for him. Do the Rams think they can sign him long term?

Initial reaction is that the Bills just got much worse, in at least 2017 anyway. 2 young impact players, 1 with elite upside for a 2nd and 3rd and Jordan Matthews feels like a small return on investment, though maybe they know something we don't with Watkins foot.

That's for sure. Tyrod's top 3 targets are guys he's now never played with, and had only a few more weeks to practice with. I suppose he still has Clay as a top target, but I'm not sure Tyrod knows who he is.

They probably do, and since they sent away so many draft picks for Goff they need to be creative to surround him with talent.

Yeah, I mean, Watkins missed almost half of the last 2 years, and Matthews(and hopefully Jones) is probably a better WR than Woods, but that is a lot of young talent to let go of.

I'm absolutely stunned. I guess they're tanking?

What is Boldin thinking now? He signed saying he thought the Bills had a shot. If I were him, I'd retire this week.

I know Watkins has had a lot of injury issues, but that's peanuts for a guy with his skill.

Ugh.

I hate being a fan of this team. Days like this make me fantasize about being the victim of a rampage shooter so I wouldn't have to put up with this stuff anymore.

So this is a mediocre team that's learning a new system with one of the toughest schedules.  So a magical playoff run was probably unlikely even before the trade.  So from that standpoint, getting picks makes sense.

It does feel like they should've somehow been able to squeeze a 1st rounder out of all of this.

I'm just about at the end of my rope as well. I haven't lived in Western NY for 20+ years and no longer have any close family there. Why do I continue to try to hold on to such a second rate franchise???

The Chargers just moved their HQ to my current hometown and are actively reaching out for new fans. I am seriously contemplating becoming a Chargers fan - how ####### sad is that???

I guess the next question is whether they go all in with building for the future. Is Tyrod available? I would think a team like Denver would be very interested in him. What about McCoy? 2/3rds of the league should view him as an upgrade. Seems weird that unloading two 24 year olds is where the rebuilding begins.

The sky isn't falling.

I wouldn't be surprised if Matthews has similar or better stats than Watkins this year.  Matthews isn't sexy but will work well in this system.  I like Watkins but McDermott didn't seem happy with how Watkins attacks his rehab and maintaining his foot even when it feels fine.

Watkins for Matthews and a 2nd and 3rd... (Who would have thought Watkins would net any return after last year) The writing was on the wall once they didn't pick up that 5th year option which most teams do, there was a red-flag somewhere.

Not familiar with Gains but from what I'm reading is he's more a zone corner and Darby preferred man to man.  Both are young.

Gains and Matthews are free agents like Watkins - cheap rentals. Don't have to "tank" Have plenty of ammo to get a QB.  two firsts, two seconds, two thirds.

Darby looked lost last year.

What the hell is this team doing? That's horribad. Just awful. They downgraded two positions, terribly, for what? A second and third rounder? Gaines is even in a contract year! And he was a bottom quarter CB in 2016!

God I hate this team.

I don't think they ever really warmed up  to Watson and didn't want to extend his contract.

I bet they aren't sure of Tyrod either because adding extra picks has to be part and parcel of the strategy of loading up for a QB in next year's draft.

I hope the new ownership isn't trying to pinch pennies but that they really do have a plan.

Money isn't an issue.  They weren't married to Watkins/Tyrod. It's about trying to leap-frog the 49ers, Jets, etc.

Two firsts, two seconds, two thirds.  So even if they finish their 7-9 and the Chiefs make or miss the playoffs and they really love a QB they can move up.

if I was shady I'd retire too(or holdout for trade), no point in spending my final years getting run into the ground for a top 5 pick.

@AdamSchefter:  BUFF set up for 2018 draft

2 1st round picks(Mahomes Deal)

2 2nd Round picks(Watkins Deal)

2 3rd Round picks (Matthews/Darby deal)

This is insane.  Can anyone give some analysis on Darby?
100% speculation on my part, but I wonder if mgt looked at their draft notes on him from a couple of years ago and saw something about his character over the last couple of months since their arrival that made them think they wanted to move on from him.  I don't know that he looked THAT bad in his second season last year.

Well I like the deals.

Forget about what was paid for Sammy, that is a sunk cost. Based on PRODUCTION and likely production, I would take Matthews and a 2nd for Watkins any day and feel like I fleeced the other team.

Particularly when the strength of your offense is the running game.

Darby seems like a much better corner man to man than Gaines, but if they are running zone they have a valuable asset that is wasted. It is smart to flip him for a CB who will probably be about the same in zone and pick up another 3rd.

I have 0 clue how much Boldin has left in the tank, but if he's thinking HoF a chance to be a #1 WR, even for our beloved Bills has to be a dream come true.

He's #9 on receptions list. 70 receptions puts him at #4 or 5 depending on Witten and the only guy who probably has a shot of passing him when he's eligible is Brown.

He's #14 on yards. 802 yards puts him at #9. Hes 23rd in TD, but 8 more would put him alone in 13 or 14 and 10 puts him ahead of Ike Bruce, likely at 12th all time.

If he finishes his career 4th in receptions, 9th in rec yards and 12th in rec TDs, he's going to have a strong argument to get in.

He also has the dominant seasons that would be needed:

2003: 101/1377/8
2005: 102/1402/7 (in 14 games)
2008: 89/1038/11

I'm going to try giving this organization one more season. It's tough though. So many years of bad decisions and inept decision makers. The new regime's my-way-or-approach reminds me a lot of the Gregg Williams era, which was a great opening chapter to this last 16 years of hell.

Have you seen what it takes to trade for a top tier qb? Obviously not because you think a second and third are huge.

lol The sky is NOT falling in western New York.  Did you loyal Bills fans actually think you were going to make the playoffs with the current roster before Friday noon?

Taylor isn't the answer at QB and Watkins wasn't going to get tagged as a franchise WR unless he somehow remained healthy enough to play 16 games and still put up around 100 catches, 1500 yards and 10 TDs.  This team is built to run the ball so those numbers I mentioned for Watkins would not have happened here with this roster.  You have too many bad contracts on this team.  With a deep draft and maybe 5 QB prospects expected to go in the first round in the 2018 draft, the Bills have plenty of ammo to get their franchise QB.

My biggest concern or question with what is left with the current roster is, it appears the top 3 WR's on the team, Boldin, Jones and Matthews, are all slot type of WR's right?

They likely won't be sitting that far down in the draft anyways.  I see them finishing about 7th/8th worst in the league with 6 wins, so moving up to #2 wouldn't take THAT much.
