2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (1 Viewer)

I think this week it’s Georgia, Michigan, Cincinnati, and Bama as top 4 with Notre Dame 5th.

Oklahoma State passes ND with a win vs Baylor IMO and Bama is out with a loss to Georgia.

Most likely it’s Georgia, Michigan, Cincinnati, Ok State in that order. Assuming Bama loses and either Cincinnati or Ok State slips, it’ll be : Georgia, Michigan, Cincinnati/Ok State, Notre Dame.

@Brett_McMurphy: Louisiana’s Billy Napier will replace Dan Mullen as Florida’s coach, sources told @ActionNetworkHQ. 1st reported by @RossDellenger. The opening at Louisiana will be the 18th coaching change this season

Best part is, he's not even part of either fanbase.  Not sure what is going on with Kal though....I thought he was a Michigan fan.  Maybe I'm thinking of someone else.
I was, until I found out they pulled a Penn State, and I won’t cheer for a program like that.

It's going to be maddening if Alabama wins the SEC and they put two teams in.

It's also gonna annoy me if OSU beats Baylor and somehow ND goes in over them.

One of the reasons I would love to see the playoff expansion is autobids for major conference champions. With four teams I hate that you can make the playoff without winning your conference. If conferences are roughly equal to divisions, then are there any sports where winning your division doesn't get you into the playoffs?

So UGA is in, with Bama, Michigan, and Cincy in control of their destiny (if you ask me). Oklahoma State and Notre Dame are up next in that order if anyone slips. Probably Ohio State after that, then who knows.
Alabama and Michigan would both stay ahead of Ohio State if they lose.

What makes it worse is it just waters down the SEC and their rivalries just to fit in Texas and OU.  Tenn-Bama used to be a great rivalry, now they rarely play.

The great thing if Georgia beats Bama, is the SEC fanboys can experience Bama in a lessor bowl and have 3-6 studs beg out for the NFL.
It just won’t mean more, I guess.

Michigan with a loss in the title game has to be ahead of OSU after just dominating them on the field
Thing is, the committee probably won’t take a 2 loss conference champion. B1G and Big 12 could get shut out of the CFP if the wrong teams win.

@mzenitz: Lincoln Riley just informed his staff at Oklahoma that he’s taking the head coaching job at USC, a source tells @On3sports

That would be an incredible hire for USC.   He's a helluva coach.  Interested to see what he's able to accomplish with the type of talent USC can attract.

Why Lincoln Riley would go to USC I have no idea. But that’s a gut punch.
Huge market but way less pressure and overall scrutiny I think. He clearly hates the local media in Oklahoma, like truly hates them. I can’t blame the guy for wanting to go to LA. Lived in this part of the country his whole life, good for him.

Texas and Oklahoma are headed towards a lot of pain in the SEC. They’ll get a lot richer but should have stayed in their little fiefdom

Well that was a year in the making. Hope Caleb Williams stays. OU football about to be in for a rude awakening after how well we've had it for as long as I've followed college football...

Meh, that has little to do with it. It’s about less pressure, more control, and a private school in a meh football conference. Also he  has access to California recruits in his backyard.

Something OU has plenty of and LSU was "supposedly" offering to make him the highest paid coach in the sport.  As others have mentioned, he maybe really doesn't want anything to do with the SEC.

I’ll have to double check, but you don’t play Bama every week just because you are in the SEC, right? They are gonna be just fine. Mizzou and A&M have been relatively just as successful as they were in the Big 12.

Oh no, it’s Mississippi State! How could we ever beat an air raid team coached by Mike Leach.
Behind Bama and Georgia now, and on par with LSU, Florida, Auburn. Dumb decision for sports, great for a bunch of rich people to get richer. And it cost you your coach.

iirc OU has made the playoffs 4 times so far? In 7 years or whatever? You honestly think that continues? You’re living in dreamland if you do.

The SEC angle is flawed, they aren’t going to the SEC for at least one more and possibly three years. They aren’t gonna have ten wins every year but they’ll be more competitive for southern recruits and OU has more to offer than most of the SEC programs. He could have gone to the NFL at any point, I think he just wants his own program.

Can’t really be mad, I’ve left good jobs for more control, new challenges, etc. If he was 50, I’d question it. He’s 38.

His “I’m not the next LSU coach” shtick at the presser last night seems a bit dickish however.

I’m curious how much the transfer portal plays a role here too. USC has had atrocious recruiting the past few years and in the old days it’d take a while to recover. Now he might have a more realistic opportunity to turn things quickly.

Those of us playing devy fantasy should have started to notice Jaxson Dart already, but with Riley as his coach, he could go far.

Zero national championships, which is ultimately what matters. OU has been beating up on the Big 12 this century, yes, but this is actually the longest title drought for the program in the modern era.

Good post. I don’t have any bad feelings towards him whatsoever. Never thought he’d be a lifer anyways, like you said he’s super young. He’ll get the NFL itch eventually

I have a coach in mind for you guys who’ll “keep you in the conversation”, kick the can on not quite getting you over the hump, and has won in Oklahoma before 😉

Also I don’t think staying in the Big 12 is a realistic option. Eventually it’s going to be the power conference that goes away, even if OU and Texas stayed. It’s not really possible to replace flagship institutions line Colorado, Nebraska, aTm, and Missouri. They’ve been circling the drain for a decade.

Agreed on 1-6. Buckeyes are out though.

If Bama beats UGA (unlikely IMO), why wouldn’t UGA and Bama be two of the top teams?  I agree with you that it’s best to have the P5 + 3 at-large in a 8 team playoff but until that happens I want the four best teams.

Adam Schefter

Oklahoma has targeted Cardinals’ HC Kliff Kingsbury as one of the potential replacements for Lincoln Riley, league sources tell ESPN. Kingsbury has one year remaining on his contract after this season.

I wonder if Adam ran this past Kliffs agent

    Why would Kingsbury go to Oklahoma?   He's the coach of the best team (by record) in the NFL with a young potential franchise qb.
