2021 College football thread - Auburn’s gotta Auburn. (2 Viewers)

@BruceFeldmanCFB

Am told by a source that the report that UGA DC Dan Lanning has been hired as the next head coach at Oregon is not true.

Dan Lanning, Rush Chair,  glad to meet you

@AJCsports: Breaking: Dan Lanning to leave Georgia to become Oregon head coach https://www.ajc.com/sports/georgia-bulldogs/breaking-dan-lanning-to-leave-georgia-to-become-oregon-head-coach/TPDWMYPORVB47ODTGWPXWWFEQU/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot

Yup, all the local guys saying it's also not true.  So in the last two days reports have been we hired Chip (247 Sports) and Lanning (Bleacher Report), both of which were quickly shot down by U of O.

Still waiting for the Dabo to Oregon story to come out.....

This is the issue with everyone wanting to be "first" for social media cred.

If Oregon is serious about not wanting to be a stepping stone school for coaches they sure have a strange way of conducting candidate searches.

Personally I would rather get a great coach that may leave in 3-4 years because Oregon has the roster to make a run at the playoffs the next few years.  I would hate Wilcox or Kelly.

Alabama 41- Cinci-17

Bama could put up 60 but think Saban will save some plays. This one is a no doubter.

Question?  How was Auburn on the verge of shutting out Alabama??

Georgia 24- Michigan 20

Going to be a hard hitting game but Michigan will have to throw the ball more than they want to. Then again Georgia`s QB looked shakey against Bama.  Still think UG pulls out a close one but would not be shocked if Michigan wins.  Love Michigans helmets though.
Alabama’s best game probably beats Cincinnati, but 2 things give me some hope as a Bearcats fan.

1. The Bama performance we just saw in their last game has been the exception rather than the rule and it’s possible they play like they have most of the year instead of how they did in that game.

2. What has carried Cincy all year is the secondary. 2 time 1st team All American CB on one side and the Thorpe award winner this year on the other.  That might be a good matchup considering the Bama running game has not been what it used to be.

@colin_dunlap: Army/Navy game day I miss that call from dear friend Beano Cook. He’d always call few hours before game.

“Don’t forget the game’s on!”

Me: “I know. Got it.”

Him: “We owe it to those kids to watch. Some of them will be playing REAL away games next year, in places like f—— Kabul.”

Oregon is trying to buy a national championship before uncle Phil kicks off.  It's all built on flash, and no substance.  They'll make a splash hire, and it will predictably play out like the last several years......good football team that doesn't meet their expectations.....coach leaves....wash, rinse, repeat.

The reality is Eugene Oregon is not a "destination".  The long play would be to hire someone like Wilcox, make sure you recruit locally, and build it from there.  But that's not the quack way.......the quack way is to throw more and more money at it.

I've got a handful of quack friends and most of em want chip back.......my response as a Beaver fan, and a duck hater is..... I hope they do hire chip.  He likely won't be able to re-create what he had with his outstanding assistants, and Mariota.  Also, he hates recruiting.......please look to the past!

Eugene and Lubbock have a lot in common. While one does let you pump your own gas, they both are pretty isolated and had a single coach they made their modern reputation on.  Lubbock never really got an angel donor to speak of, but with the Permian heating up at 100/bbl they have more money now than god.

@KayceSmith

A few years during the Army/Navy pre-game prayer, the chaplain said “this is the only game where everyone on the field would die for everyone watching.”

That’s how important this game is. 🇺🇸

:lmao:  Your envy of Oregon is awesome Mr. Beaver!  All Oregon fans I know do not want Chip or Wilcox as they know that would make zero sense.  This team is loaded and needs a coach that can win now.  I am glad you have resigned yourself to knowing will make a splash hire.  Be ready for a BIG nfl name or Lanning in the next few days.

Let me guess, you think Corvallis is a destination?

No, Corvallis is NOT a destination, and OSU is not marketing it as such.  It's a small college town.  And Eugene will never be as attractive as southern Cali or Seattle......

Just my two cents: EUGENE is no destination but Uncle Phil and the admin have made UO a destination. Facilities, swag, reputation, success. At this moment there is not a bigger destination in the PAC12. Riley will change that almost assuredly, but right now I think that is unarguable.

Came here to read Army / Navy comments.  None?  Disappointing!  I love watching this game every year, there's so much more to it than football, obviously.  My Grandfather went to Annapolis and was a Captain in WWII, so maybe that's why I'm biased.  Wearing his Naval Academy ring as I type.

Agreed.  PAC 12 jobs it is USC and Oregon at the top.  Just laughing that this guy keeps parroting nonsense about no substance.  Oregon has carried the conference the past 12 years with multiple national championship appearances and New Year's six games.  OSU should be happy they finally made a bowl game.

Thanks for having me on ignore.

Good game so far, nice to see a game that obviously means so much to each team.

That reverse was huge, hell of a run.  I couldn't understand why Ken didn't kick the field goal there.  4th and 5 and in range?  He tried one from like 54 before half that gave Army great field position.  And that ends up giving up 3 more points in a tight game with points at a minimum.  4th and long and makable FG position and he went for it???

Holy cow what a difference that play made.

Meh..... I grew up Oregon, and went to OSU.  Most people I know are Beavs.  Never woulda considered u of o based on what they offer academically.  So it goes beyond sports.  If you grew up here, and have to suffer duck fans, most of whom didn't even go to u of o, you'd know why we hate em......act like they invented college football, and act like a spoiled 3 year old when they lose.

I saw a poll about pac 12 fanbases.....the school with the highest percentage of fans that went to the school....Stanford......the lowest percentage u of o.

LOL, I see it now, sorry.  I didn't go back far enough, I see there are other Army / Navy posts as well.  I didn't think there was one when I first checked in.  My mistake.
All good, it is an awesome quote.

I'm just salty cause it's gonna fly over the total.

I did grow up in Eugene and went every home game in the 80's and 90's and rooted for the Ducks when they were awful.  My hate is not towards OSU but towards Washington as they filled Autzen for away games in the 80's and their fans were so arrogant and annoying.  "Kenny Wheaton is gonna score" will always be my favorite memory and that Rose Bowl in 94 is what got Phil Knight intetested and the rest is history.

I apologize for any abnoxious Duck fans as many are band wagon fans.  I really do like your coach Smith and he has turned it around.

I share your mutual hate for u dub......and I actually barfed in my mouth rooting for them against Wazzu as if we woulda won the Civil war, we win the north.....neither happened obviously, and when I knew wazzu was gonna stomp u dub, I relished in it.

I do know some OG duck fans, who I respect......the bandwagon is pretty obnoxious though.  When we moved to Reno area years ago, my wife and I were questioned by new, local friends as to why were wearing Beavs gear and not ducks gear......you can imagine our reaction, both being alums......these folks just assumed if ur from Oregon you're on the bandwagon I guess....haha

Holy crap, Fagot did not know that snap was coming???  I can't believe it!

In hindsight, it looked like he didn't know it was coming, he snatched it, last second.  That is nuts!  Army wins that game if the ball goes over his head, great hands for a linebacker.  What a way for a Senior to go out.

Curious if he missed the play call, that had to be it.

Well Ken just said it was an accident.  Boy that is lucky.  Never seen that bad of an accident go so right.  Even crazier to realize Fagot likely wasn't even looking at the snap, he had to just see that thing coming, and fast, out of the corner of his eye.

So the Center completely choked/panicked, whatever you want to call it and snapped the ball not even close to where it was supposed to go.  And Fagot breaking the tackle was yet another thing on the play, that guy had him, but he broke it.

Just unreal, all the way around.

If I’d seen you in Beavers gear, I’d probably ask if you went there.

Sigh.....

Ducks fans with an IQ above 14 didn't want Chip back.  Would have been a stupid hire.

Chip had one year with Mariota.  He did his damage with luminaries like Derron Thomas and Jeremiah Masoli.  The guy can coach but he is a poor recruiter.

The Ducks have played for two National Championships the last 11 years.  That's unbelievable for a school with next to nothing in homegrown talent around it - Herbert is an anomaly.

So whatever it's built on in your mind is irrelevant - it's a successful program and has been for 25 years.  It OWNS its two biggest rivals and continues to play at a high level unlike any other Pac12 school.  They have beat Michigan twice, Florida State, Ohio State, Texas, Tennessee twice, Miss State, Michigan State twice so enjoy your sour grapes but pay respect where it's due.

These folks were pretty oblivious to the rivalry......although you'd think they'd have known better seeing as how they hated unlv, and understood what the Fremont Cannon trophy means to Reno and Vegas.

As long as we have Jonathan Smith, the rivalry will be pretty even.  If you're paying attention he's building something.  It's not the glitz of Nike U.....it's more like Whitt at Utah, who happens to regularly make the ducks his #####!

Also, with Riley at USC there goes oregon poaching those southern Cali kids

I'm probably going to retire in Eugene so SOME people consider it a destination.

I root for Oregon State too.  I'm one of those horrible Duck fans that didn't go to Oregon.  But I got talked into season tickets in 2000 and as a fan of college football, I've had a blast going to games and cheering them on.  But I root for Oregon State when they play other teams.  I really like Smith.

I have one son at Oregon and another applying to Oregon State so my dream is to have a valid excuse to cheer for both. :)

Springfield is a dump.  I love Eugene.  Great food scene, fun bars, terrific downtown vibe.
You mean springtucky?  I kid....I kid.

I'm a small town Eastern OR guy, so Corvallis is about my speed......live in Salem now, and I'm trying to get my wife to move back to a sunnier, 4 seasons kinda climate.  The Reno area is fantastic, imo.....I miss it for many reasons.
