2022-23 NBA Thread: “you’ll never let me down like the Heat did”, Miami fan says to giant pile of cocaine (3 Viewers)

Meanwhile, the Pacers, a consistently mediocre franchise that desperately needs to either shove the chips in and make some big moves or tear things down and build around a couple of core young guys, is once again sitting around doing absolutely nothing.

On the real though, this could be a semi-interesting afternoon.

You're (presumably) gonna have a few Western teams try to respond to the blockbuster last night and make a few minor enhancements that they probably would have otherwise sat on.

Dallas needs to be like "Hey Mr. Marks, know we just did this...what about a first for Dorian Finney-Smith? Seems like y'all aren't gonna be competing and probably best to get something for him, right?"

glad to see NBA hasn't changed. funny shenanigans at the end of this 6'ers game. luckily NBA doesn't really matter until April it seems, regular season seems more pointless then it ever was
What were these shenanigans you speak of? Couldn't have been the fact that PHI shot twice as many free throws as BOS, right?
was some missed calls sure, but Doc having Maxey on the bench too much, etc. Bit of a fraud as a coach. not sure why Harden didn't continue to take the ball and shoot either

and yes Philly shot more FTs. they will continue to do so because teams like to hack Embiid.

Seeding might matter a bit in the East this year. If the chalk advances, 2 v 3 will be a bloodbath whichever teams are in it and I think the 1 seed will be happy to play the mangled corpse of whoever comes out of that one.
will be interesting to see if a team like Miami can turn it up as the season goes on. Cleveland will be fun to watch as well, but i do agree the East seems really top heavy and the race to 1 seed for the top 3 would seem to make a pretty big difference.

of course i thought this as well the last year of Ben and Embiid when they were able to get Atlanta in round 2...............

The Nets have done more damage to their franchise than any team I can remember in any sport. Unbelievable.
The Athletic mentioned the 2013 trade for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce for draft picks that turned into Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Oof.
Oh god yea. Twice now I guess. Houston owns all their extremely valuable picks. What a disaster.
I'll zag here and say yes '24 and '26 are going to Houston, but this nucleus should generally be good enough to at least stay play-in gam-ish and now they have Phoenix's drafts, a team that is arguably going to be pretty terrible in '27-'29. They aren't in the worst situation with Dinwidde, Thomas, Claxton, Finney-Smith, and Bridges especially if the can move Simmons into someone's space (either the Spurs now or someone else over the summer) especially since they can probably get more assets for O'Neale and Johnson.

The bigger issue is what superstar will ever want to go back there.

With all the moves yesterday, will today be quiet?
I would hope the bulls sell off.
DeRozan is IMO the #1 no brainer to sell. And I've not heard any rumors.

This is a below .500 team since Lonzo Ball went down. And obviously that's a huge sample size (>100 games) with Ball having missed over a year now. And there's no return in sight for Lonzo. They still don't even know what's wrong with him after a year and over a handful of docs looking at him. Wouldn't be surprised if his career is all but done.

I'd part with him and see what's there in expanded roles for Williams/Ayo/Dalen Terry

As a Celtics fan I like getting KD out of the East.

It's a roll of the dice for PHX as they lost 2 key players in Bridges (best "glue guy" in the league today) and Cam Johnson, but added an all-time great (though on the gradual downhill side of his career) who is just coming back from injury after missing some significant time over the past few years to injury.

But Book & KD with CP3 running things and a scoring threat in the paint with Ayton? I don't know how you guard that. Only thing that can truly slow this team down is their health. All 3 of Paul, Booker and KD have missed significant time already this season. Ayton was disgruntled but should feel good that he was kept on the roster. I also really like Monty as a coach and think he gets it to work as long as he has time to work with them all together before the post season.

The West is going to be wild. PHX, DAL, DEN, LAC & MEM all have a legit chance to win the West with Golden State and the Lakers still lurking with some all-time great players on their rosters. There is also the Kings who are good enough to get to the WCF as well and knock a team or two out.

The East just solidified its 3-team race (with Cleveland lurking).

Hard to imagine. With that said—the trades that went down over the past couple days will certainly influence other teams decisions on if they are “buyers” or “sellers”. Imo—the West just got a lot more ambiguous yesterday. The Suns and Lakers just improved themselves a lot on paper. The Mavs potentially improved themselves—but that is hard to know until we see Kyrie and Luka together for a few games. The T-Wolves arguably got better—but the ambiguity around their injury situation makes them very difficult to analyze.

In my opinion—the east opened up a decent amount. While I could still see the Nets being competitive and winning games—I think it is safe to say that they are no longer contenders this season. I personally don’t see any massive favorites between Boston, Milwaukee and Philly. The Heat are probably a piece or two away—so the Nets getting out of the picture might motivate them make a move and jump into contender status. I do like the Josh Hart addition to the Knicks. The Hawks might only be a player away so maybe they make a move. A few days ago—I would have guessed that Toronto blows things up. However, with them picking up Poetl and not having to give up Trent Jr to make that happen—I could easily see them moving up the standings and making into the play in tourney. I personally think we do see a few more deals today—but nowhere near the magnitude of yesterday. Cleveland in my opinion has a pretty solid roster—but could just use some more depth. If they can get that without giving up much—they are going to be tough as well.

Should be a nice buyout market.

Wall/Westbrook/Terrance Ross/Will Barton/Josh Richardson all may wind up there.

Got to believe Suns will be at forefront of talks there because they're going to be offer championship contention, sizable role for them along with nice winters

Well the dream/nightmare is over....it was a fun/strange last few years being a hated "superteam" but in a way Im glad its over. Yes its back to obscurity but to be honest they are in a better position now then they were before the big two signed. They have youth/athleticism/defense and should have a lot of flexibility in the future with a pile of assets. While they are back in the pack, at least it will be fun to watch them build and make a run. I posted here a few times that while I'd love to finally have my team win a title, it would have been tainted a bit with the super team as I personally found them extremely unlikable and hard to root for. This team will be fun and if Cam/Claxton keep developing with Bridges on the cusp of being a very good player - this team could make a run.

Just for fun lets take a look

2018 - Before the stars - Dangelo Russell, Caris Lavert, Joe Harris, Spencer Dinwiddle, Jarrett Allen

2023 - Spencer Dinwiddle, Seth Curry, Mik Bridges, Cam Thomas, Cam Johnson, DFS, Rotce O'Neale and Nic Claxton - not even including Ben who at this point is a negative asset but if he gets healthy/better figure a solid 6th man/2d team/defensive specialist

Throw in the ridiculous 11 1st rders in the next 6 years - Ill just act like the whole KD/Kyrie thing was just a bad dream and enjoy watching this version build.

I like/dont love the deal for KD - felt like they could have gotten a little more but they obviously wanted to send him to a place where he wanted to go vs Kyrie - and Bridges, Cam and the boat of picks is a fair return - I dont think they had any interest in Paul based on age and Ayton as they have Claxton and dont think they could have even added him with that stupid rookie contract rule. So while its a huge step down - I think they are a playoff team if they play to potential.

People can ridicule the Nets all they want but what choice did they have? Its like one of those 80s movies where the nerd gets a makeover, becomes popular and bags the hot chick then becomes an even bigger nerd after getting cocky and blowing it.....Looking forward to being a nerd again!

They’ll never get a good free agent again.

Yes, they have the makings of a solid 34-win team. So maybe this won’t cost this a top-3 pick but they’re in pretty bad shape if you are discussing long-term winning a title odds. Not bad enough to get a star (nor do they have the picks) and not attractive to any free agent after this debacle.

I dont agree that theyll never get a good free agent again - they did right by KD and HArden sending them where they wanted to go - they didnt do the same for Kyrie but anyone can see why. Its still a premiere market, solid team and fan base -plus money always talks. I think the Nets stay very relevant even though not a title contender as of now and can easily build up to a very good team a good FA or even star would want to join.

Yeah, the Nets as a free agent destination should still be in the top 10 of preferred teams for players. NY market and money to spend plus KD and Harden did not get screwed. Kyrie is one of the worst personalities in the NBA today.

While all true, they're pretty close to Utah's situation right now only they don't have to suck now to be in a good position for 27-9. They took they're chance, lost, need to regroup for 2-4 years, and are setup for 27-29. Without a bona fide 24-26 year old superstar, that's a pretty good situation to be in all things considered especially considering the organization seems to be good at identifying and developing youngsters.

Why? It's not like they treated these players poorly - and Durant, Irving and Harden are all known problem children, probably even within the player community.
Irving is absolutely beloved by the players. Not trying to sound prickish here but I don’t think you could be more wrong about that. The way fans think about him is the total opposite of players. KD too. Harden does seem like a joke to many.

Not totally sure why the Nets made this deal, since it obviously lowers their ceiling dramatically for this year. with KD and the guys they had around him, they still at least had a chance at the ECF.

My best guess is that Tsai (and maybe Marks) was just done with this star-driven approach based on how mercurial and difficult all 3 were, but on the court right now, I don't totally get it.

That being said, Marks has assembled a ton of quality rotation players and picks over the past week. I would expect them to be in the playoffs and they would be competitive in a series with the majority of teams based on the fact that they have so many wing defenders now and a lot of good shooting. Of course, overall offensive creation will be ... challenging. And they have plenty of stuff to work with to make future trades.

I don’t think they are going to get blacklisted. Everyone recognizes what nut jobs Harden and Kyrie are, and they helped Durant out in the end. NY is one of the handful of actual free agent destinations in the league.

I could see them being a .500 team. It's just a lot of figuring things out with those wings. Just figuring out so many new pieces on the fly in-season isn't ideal.

They've got a proven 40 PPG scorer, one of the best 2 way players in league in Bridges (playing best ball of his career right now), and a young and improving center. They've got to figure out their point situation (prob got to be Simmons right now anyway) and what exactly they're going to do with all those wings (not the worst problem to have as many of them can be dealt)

I still like them in present and they're loaded with trade pieces. If Simmons was showing anything at all so far to date, I'd like them a whole lot more.

They've become almost like the Raptors South, especially now that Toronto has Poeltl, though not quite as athletic.

They bent the knee to Kyrie’s BS about playing only home games during Covid which caused Harden to want out. All went downhill from there. Ownership’s only job in a situation involving megastars is to keep them happy and they failed miserably, especially with Durant.

I'll let this go, but none of that really speaks to their ability to sign free agents in the future.

My takes so far.

I like what the Nets did and don't think they will be all that bad. If their young core shows they are a playoff caliber team, then I could see the Nets getting a top tier free agent or taking all these picks they just got to try to get the next disgruntled superstar.

The Lakers did what they had to, but I don't think it will be enough to even make the playoffs. This franchise is screwed for a long time.

The new Suns owner is going for it, I think this team would have been even more dangerous if they could have kept Bridges and traded Ayton, but that might not have been on the table. They have to be the favorite in the west.

I feel bad for T-Wolves fans.

The Pistons better do something this summer and I mean fire the coach, sign a decent free agent and at least be in the stupid play-in tournament. If not they are dead to me.

Happy deadline day!!!

We’ll see. Players talk and Kyrie/KD are very well respected in that circle. Kyrie said today about KD that he’s happy he escaped Brooklyn.

More news—not trade related—but looks like Jaylen Brown might miss some time. Shams is saying the friendly fire hit from Tatum resulted in a facial fracture. I hope it’s nothing too serious. Already ruled out through the all star break and possibly longer.

There goes half of their scoring
