2022 New York Football Giants (under new management of Schoen & Daboll) (1 Viewer)

? They faced Green Bay in the 1st round and played the tough in the 1st half and arguably should have been up big. That was Eli's last time he looked like Playoff Eli that 1st half, but SO MANY soul-crushing dropped passes.

The boat trip gets much too much focus. It was a midweek trip and all the players were back at the training facility on time, some of them early. As long as they weren't late/weren't distracted I don't care about the trip. Guarantee you people wouldn't have batted an eye if they went hunting/took a drive down to touch the four corners of a state or some crap like that.

As long as they weren't distracted??? LOL ... What do you think they were doing on the boat white boarding plays and watching film??
If they were hunting with drugs, alcohol, Trey Songz and chicks in bikinis ... people would've batted an eye

They got crushed by GB ... they went into GB with a better record and -4.5 underdogs and lost by 25 pts!

Giants do not match up well at all against the Eagles ... Eagles have the advantage in almost every matchup. Even the Giants strengths are offset by the Eagles.
Dexter going against the strongest Interior line in the NFL, Thibideux going against the best off OT in the NFL.

I'm not overly impressed with Hurts ... He's surrounded by an incredible line and incredible offensive weapons but he's good enough in that environment ... most QBs would be.

Unfortunately I think the wheels come off the bus on Saturday. I'm expecting something similar to the 1st Game ... a multiscore loss
Jones will have his worst game of the year (3 Turnovers) as the Eagles dominate both sides of the ball and The Frankman will finally get a chance to say I told you so.
This makes sense. On paper when you look at the starters for both teams, there are only a handful of Giants starters that would start for the Eagles.
Offense – Saquon, Andrew Thomas and maybe Bellinger (if you started 2 TE set) or Hodgins (if you started a 3 WR set)
Defense – Dex & McKinney
That’s about it

IMO there's not much sense trying to draw any conclusions on the last matchup for all the reasons stated in this thread. Even the first matchup had the Gmen missing a ton of key players.

No doubt the Eagles have a huge talent advantage at every position. For the Giants to keep it close they need to 1) win the TO battle; 2) Hope that Hurts is somewhat limited and 3) establish the ground game to control the clock. If the Eagles show some rust and allow the Giants to hang early that would go a long way to building their confidence. After all, the Eagles haven't played a clean game in over a month and the Giants are coming off their best performances to date. I can just as easily see the Eagles blowing them out as I can see the Gmen stealing one in a nail biter (although I am clearly in the minority on the latter).

You would be in the majority in my house

Obviously crappy night for the Giants but they had a great season.

I look forward to seeing what this regime does in the offseason.

I'd love a cover LB. I've been dreaming of one for a long time. However, I am still not convinced they have fixed the OL and that must come first. The Eagles whomped on us not because they have better LBs or WRs or even corners. Their OLine was awesome today. I'd like to see the Giants get that kind of an OLine. It makes everyone better.

The season was awesome. If someone told me the Giants were playing tonite, I would have laughed at them and assumed they were drunk. They improved much faster than anyone could have hoped. Now they should be out of salary cap hell (I can't tell you how sick and tired I am of the whole Bradbury story line. The giants would have cut Sanders, Payton, Montana and LT last year due to the salary cap hell they were in. It was shocking how poor the roster was for their combined hit to the salary cap). That was job one, even if they won't admit it. Now they can start roster building.

ETA: I'll be interested to see what they do w/Barkley. I love him. But I think his clock is ticking and I am not sure he is a luxury the Giants can afford right now. I am pretty sure he pulled a groin at the end of the game today. He had that last run and then I don't think he was on the field again. His body language was screaming pulled muscle.

I saw a report that they tried to sign Barkley during the bye week for about 12M per season. The report says he turned it down.

There is some speculation that the Giants will pursue ILB Edmunds from Buffalo but he figures to be expensive

Consider it fortunate. Signing an RB for big $ is such a mistake.

So, cover LB in the 1st/CB in the 2nd in the draft, or vice versa?
Tremaine Edmunds is a FA coming off his best season and still only 24 ..Schoen and Daboll are obviously real familiar with him
PFF has him as LB#4 with the top Coverage grade of all LBs ... Might be worth paying him and having picks 1 and 2 available for CB/WR
Giants also need a Center badly

If the giants expect Edmunds to be as good as he was this season for the next 3 years ... they need to go after him and they should have the upper hand being familiar with him. I think he would add more value than Barkley for about the same price. I like Barkley but he's to inconsistent and Giants Oline is not good enough to take advantage of his skills week in and week out

Not only havent the Giants fixed the Oline but they are still one of the 3-4 worst in the NFL according to PFF
The Eagles have been PFF #1 all season long ... Giants desperately need a Center and some Huge Mauling Guards like the Eagles have ... The Eagles were able to run effectively up the middle against Dexter and Williams ... that's how good the Eagles line is

No need for the Just to rush out and sign Barkley ... Sit back and wait while everyone else overpays

The 2023 free agent RB class is absolutely stacked, including:
- Josh Jacobs
- Saquon Barkley
- Miles Sanders
- Tony Pollard
- David Montgomery
- Kareem Hunt
- Jamaal Williams
- Damien Harris
- Jeff Wilson, Jr.
- Devin Singletary
- Raheem Mostert
- Rashaad Penny

You can sign an elite RB for big money if you think his skillset won't decline/he can stay reasonably healthy. Signing a limited QB for big money would be worse.

In this case, signing Jones and not signing Saquon would be the biggest death flag for this franchise.

I’ll stand by my assertion that spending huge $ on a RB is a poor allocation of cap $.

We could go with Tyrod, he is signed for next year. He does have 4 concussion in the past 5 years though, maybe he could get us to 5-12. Draft a QB after Tyrod's year. Continue to fill the numerous holes through the draft this year.

So in 2 years (year 3 of Shoen Daboll) we will be starting over with a rookie QB ... So the next time we should expect to make the playoffs would be in about 3 years if tht QB turns out to be as good as Jones. And if he's not as good as Jones we will be looking for a new GM and Coach in year 4

Or we could sign or franchise Jones, get him some damn weapons and an Oline ... and make the playoffs again next year

There are plenty of worse QBs in the league than Jones. There are plenty of better offensive lines in the league. Before Jones we heard how crappy Eli was. Eli was the only thing holding this team back. They show him off and here comes Jones. Now Jones is the piece that needs to replaced? The one constant? An Uber crappy oline. It destroyed the end of Eli’s career and impeded the beginning of jones’. Thomas is a keeper. I’m thinking/hoping Neal can improve? The rest are targets for replacement. Until the giants figure this out, they’ll be playing with an anchor.

To be fair I didn't say this was a good option.

Be fascinating what happens this off season. Feel bad for Jones actually, poor coaching til this year, 3 different offensive coordinators, limited weapons on offense, an o-line that has been poor at best. Someone posted earlier, and it may have even been you, but man we really could use a stud C.

YouTube: Brett Kollman - How Brian Daboll saved the Giants.

This was before the Vikings/Giants game and after he put out the vid on how horrendous the Vikings D is. The man is so good on breaking down concepts and explaining stuff in detail. For some mysterious reason, randos were calling for Brian Daboll to be fired in the Divisional Round thread. :lmao:

Thanks for the link.

I searched that thread with the term "fired" - didn't come up. Can you show the receipts?

edit: one from Djackson. take that with a grain of salt.

I dont get the Wink Martindale Luv ... Giants Defense was boarderline terrible this year ! They were below avg in everything except pressuring the QB.
There is no way he will land a head coach job but even if he did I dont think it would be a bad thing for the Giants.

17th pts allowed
26th TOs
15th passing yds
31st yd per rush
25th
Total Yds
24th Yds per play

I think Kafka had much more of a positive impact on the Offense and would hate to see hm leave after the Improvements that the Giants made on Offense ... really with less invested than Defense

Maybe because he kept them competative all season through a whole lot of injuries. Just a guess. Pro Football Report listed players who spent more than 1 game injured this season. An example,
The Eagles had 8 defensive players on that list. The Giants had 22. Between obvious holes on the defense and a stat like this one. OVERALL for the season, stats aside, the defense performed well.

Injuries are typical for the Giants ... I believe they were the most injured team in the NFL in 2021.
I'm just not impressed Winks defense. They focus on pressure and end up getting killed vs the run

For what it's worth ... EXP Expected points contributed by all defense
2022 - 29th EXP -125.22 (only the Raiders, Lions and Bears were worse)
2021 - 19th EXP -76.83
2020 - 9th EXP -66.94

The best defenses have a stellar DL that gets pressure without having to blitz (See: SF and Phi). If a DC doesn't have that stellar DL though, then they have to blitz, or let a QB sit back relaxed in the pocket. If you have to blitz a lot to get pressure, you're sacrificing peeps in coverage. It's that simple. Only so much a coordinator can do if a DL isnt getting pressure.

Giants probably have a top 5 DLine ???

Daniel Jones should get somewhere between Jameis Winston and Ryan Tannehill. Giants only have about $55 million in cap space and a lot of holes to fill.
Jones will get between $30m-$35m per year whether you like it or not.
He's Better than Tannehill, Ryan, Wentz , Goff, Cousins, Carr and of course Dak, who is F***ing Terrible!! They all make between $30-$40M

It will depend on what the market for Jones is, there are roughly 10 teams that will be in the market for a new QB. Some of those teams will draft a guy.
Off the top of my head these are the teams that will be looking for a new QB: Washington, Carolina, Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Jets, Houston, Indy, Tennessee, and Raiders

"Barkley was offered around $12M/season during the bye week, per sources, and Schoen said they weren’t close in value. Barkley said yesterday he didn’t necessarily want to set the market, though I continue to hear he wants near Christian Mcaffrey’s $16M average."
I wouldn't go more than $9m for Barkley and I dont even think I would do that ... to many RBs available. Barkley is already slowing you could literally get 2 RBs for half of what Barkley is looking for.

may be wrong but the only guy on that list to win a Super Bowl is Fournette. paying $16mm to Barkley would be a mistake.

I'm on record many times saying that I hate Daniel Jones, and I truly believe that the giants are never going to advance far in the playoffs with him as their qb - his success this year was due to the fact that his coaches were able to get him to play within his abilities and take away opportunities for him to commit boneheaded turnovers. He looks like a probowl qb against terrible defenses and a xfl player against good ones, and the playoffs were a perfect example of that.

That being said, he's the perfect candidate for the franchise tag or a two/three year (with an easy out) contract while the gmen draft and coach up a rookie qb that fits their system. He's shown that he's willing to take coaching and can help the rest of the team maintain its upward momentum.

Really spot on. A lot of NY media has him going for the 4 year/$35MM range which runs too rich for me. I’d much rather tag him at the $32 number and let it play out while we build up our other positions. All the Jones haters who want to just let him walk or think the tag number is too rich fail to provide an alternative. There’s not anything in the draft this year that wows me and the veteran qb market sucks. That said, I trust the front office more than any we’ve had in the last many years, so far be it from me to think I am smarter than them whichever direction they go.

I agree with Tribe. I trust the front office and coaches. Trust the process. I like Daniel Jones. I like Saquon Barkley. I'd like to see both of them back. They both had a lot to do with the unexpected success this year. It would be great to see them with another year in the system. But if Shoen and Daboll have different ideas,I trust them. They inherited a mess from the front office on down and have very quickly changed the culture around the team. TRUST THE PROCESS!

For what it’s worth Spotrac has Daniel Jones market value at 26.2M per year. They have Saquon at 12.3M per year.

If they Giants could get both of them at the Spotrac numbers I would be in favor of that big time

Yeah, I know the Sportrac numbers, and agree I think that would be ideal for both players. That said, we all know that if Jones hit the open market, some QB desperate team would pay a lot more than that for him. Look at the QB numbers posted up thread. Bottom tier vet QBs start at $30MM, and Jones is younger and has at least some more upside left in him. That's why the reality of a true market price for him probably starts at the tag number. Hopefully the reports are true and he realizes what a good thing he has and would offer a bit of a home team discount to sign a longer deal, but I haven't really seen that play out for many athletes so I won't hold my breath.

I really like Barkley, heck I have his Jersey and the last thing I want to do this offseason is retire it to the back of my closet. He does seem to talk out of both sides of his mouth, saying he wants to stay but reportedly wants closer to the $16MM CMC deal than the $12MM he was offered by the Gmen.

He's not even in the top 10 Rushing leaders since 2018 ... give him a 4 year 40M with like 32 guarenteed

If they could get Jones at that number it would be awesome 4-5 deal at that avg is a steal
Barkley not so much ... I would much rather use that # to go after Tremaine Edmunds who is expected to get about $11m ... LBer problem solved

realistic deals are probably more like Jones 4/120/80G and Saquon 4/56/36G or similar
Agree that's more likely ... I'm a big Saquan fan and i was of the only people on the planet that didnt mind drafting him as high as they did.
But Saquan has never been what he was as a rookie, he's definitely slowed down a bit, not a good blocker and the Giants dont use him enough in the passing game ... That said there is no way in the world with the holes they Giants have that they have the luxury of spending $14m per year on a RB that just is not worth it.

Give me for example 2 of these guys at a combined cost well below $14m
Devin Singletary (BUF), Kareem Hunt (CLE), Damien Harris (NE), D’Onta Foreman (CAR), Montgomery (CHI) etc ....

Giants are familiar with and may be able to get both Singletary and Tremaine Edmunds at a little more than it would take to get Barkley

Giants select WR Jordan Addison - USC/Pitt at #25 in Mel Kiper's 1st mock draft
https://www.nj.com/giants/2023/01/n...es-in-espns-mel-kiper-jrs-1st-round-mock.html
No offense intended towards Yenrub, but this is the part of the season that I hate. Way too much of the "coverage" is going to become about the generating clickbait headlines about mock drafts. "In latest Mock Draft, Giants make SHOCKING trades and get the first 18 picks in this year's draft!!!!!!". It was one thing when Kiper does his, now everyone does it to pull clicks. Drives the noise ratio way up.
