2022 New York Football Giants (under new management of Schoen & Daboll) (1 Viewer)

Just read this ...
DJ is the first QB in postseason history with 300 or more passing yards, two or more passing touchdowns, and 70 or more rushing yards in a game.

In his first career playoff game, Daniel Jones made history. It prompted his running back to label him "elite."

Sucks that we still need to draft a QB ...LOL!

Both QBs might hit that next week.

Great win. That was pretty much a complete game from each side. My only real beef was the inability to stop Hockstein. (SP). They did a great job vs Jefferson, so maybe that was the plan.

I didn’t understand why they didn’t take the holding call.

WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congrats Giants Fans!!!! And condolences @The Frankman !!!!
The Giants are for real and led by DJ And Saquan which is as good a QB/RB combo as there is right now!!!!!!!!!
Hey didn't see you in the game thread. Too busy sweating on the sidelines?

I think the thought was it was already 3rd and long (9). One chance to stop them vs. 2, but it didn't matter because they left Hock wide open the next one.

Any thoughts you want to share regarding Djs play? I'm curious what you thought.

Congrats fellas. Looking forward to playing y’all next week. I’ll be honest of the three possibilities for the birds to face next week, NYG was my last choice. Was hoping for TB or Dallas.

A blowout loss in Round 1 does nothing to help this Giants team, they're already playing massively over expectations with very little talent due to injuries. Also you're giving instances where you COULD get a good player in the later draft picks. I never said it was impossible, just very unlikely based on the draft market. The bigger difference @Qammy is that the list you made, none of those are impact QBs.
Giants are 8-6-1. According to NFL Tankathon, they're currently picking 23rd in the draft. If they lose out and hopefully miss the playoffs, now you're looking at a 12-14 range where you might be able to do things... a lot depends on the teams ahead of them but we'll see.
I find this mindset by fans fascinating. You can do plenty of good things picking in the 20s (or low 30s). The teams that have been consistently good over the last decade or two - Pittsburgh, GB, NE, Baltimore, KC - don't seem to have a problem reloading picking down that low most years. I'd rather the team I pull for pick in the back half of rounds (pick trades aside) because that means they are a good team.
You don't have issues with later picks when you're a team set at QB (the teams you mentioned? Kenny Pickett, Aaron Rodgers, Mac Jones, Patrick Mahomes); that's the price of being good. If the Giants want the option of trading up for a QB you want to be as close as possible.
I'm not convinced the Giants would get blown out in the 1st round of the playoffs.
Right now they would play SF and I do believe that SF would blow the Giants out.
However they could get a rematch against Minnesota and I just watched the Giants go toe to toe with them.

Minnesota's last two games are against GB & Chicago. SF has Las Vegas & Arizona.
SF trails Minnesota by 1 game for the #2 seed.
SF is 9-2 in conference, Minnesota is 7-3
:bowtie:

It'll be a fun matchup. Giants playing with house money vs. a rival they played tough a week ago. Will be a true test for Giants D/Saquon/Jones.
easy week for both coaching staffs, wondering if either will throw any significant wrinkles in the gameplans. i assume the Eagles defense won't play as much soft zone, but i think Wink will keep the blitzing up

I greatly underestimated how similar the Colts D was to the Vikes D @Yenrub, I said that in the Game thread; hopefully Giants can keep facing more terrible defenses in the playoffs!

My original point still stands doe.

**Giants at Vikings** (-3, 47.5) Sun 4:30

You can see my thoughts on the game there, player.
Hmmm Yeah I see ... LOL
- Key to this game is a large dose of Saquon/Brieda, and good Kafka play calling getting the key guys open in space. With Neal ailing you hope they mix in protection packages to give Daniel Jones time to throw operate. (Giants' Daniel Jones made NFL history in playoff upset of Vikings https://giantswire.usatoday.com/202...-nfl-history-playoff-upset-minnesota-vikings/)
- Giants don't want a shootout because no way they can score with the Vikings (GIANTS outlasted the Vikings in a SHOOTOUT at U.S. Bank Stadium behind a monster effort from Jones in his first career playoff game. https://abc7ny.com/sports/daniel-jones-leads-underdog-giants-past-vikings/12706939/)
- ISAIAH HODGINS TD! (The Frankman said: Oh wow Giants got LUCKY that shouldn't count!) (LOL! You wish it didnt count ... What about that throw?)
- Giants are lucky there isn't that much of a difference between the Colts D and the Vikings D apparently. Vikings CBs having issues vs. the great Lawrence Cager and Isaiah Hodgins.
- Always amazes me how deceivingly quick Jones is. And so many were scoffing at how Daboll might turn him into Allen-lite. hey now, let's not go crazy here. He's not even homeless man's Allen. (Qammy: Classic! Did you watch Allen Play today?? It's amamzing the Bills werent eliminated by the depleted Fins)
- Vikes D assumes Jones will never run again... y'know after he just ran.
- threw it behind Cager. I don't like Giants moving away from Saquon, he's the engine of the OP. - way behind him. Jones gets bailed out on those throws a lot but not that time. (Qammy: Did you see Slayton bail out Jones on th efinal drive)
- I can't believe Saquon has less that 10 touches this game... (The Frankman said: Key to this game is a large dose of Saquon)
- Oh hey, Saquon bailing out Daniel Jones... (Saquan Barkley: "I know we have an elite quarterback," "He's shown that multiple times.")

LOL !!! Priceless Commentary ... Thanks for pointing that out ... I needed a good laugh after an exciting stressful game!

The Giants had advantages in total yards, first downs and time of possession, yet still managed to lose the football game.

Watching other teams come up with creative plays on offense then watching the Giants less than creative offense makes we sad. I thought this was a copy cat league. Can't Garrett copy some of the creative plays. I'm not talking about trick plays either, as an example take a look at the Packers 1st TD against SF on Sunday night football.

There was a play on Thursday night football that the Panthers ran for CMC that I think the Giants should steal and run for Saquon.

Shotgun formation with a trips bunch set to the left. The RB is to the right of the QB.

All 3 WR ran crossing or drag routes from left side to the right side.

The RB took a jab step to his right then ran a simple flat route to the left side of the formation.

The defense was in man, the LB trying to cover the RB got caught in the wash of all the bodies (WR/DB) running from left to right.
The Giants FINALLY ran this play tonight. They did it on the opening drive of the 2nd half, it was 3rd and 3. They picked up 24 yards on the play and scored on that drive.

Very surprised that Josh Allen hadn’t done that

I dont think Azeez will be available if he wasnt available in a must win game. And even if he is the chance of reinjury is probably real big less than a week later

I feel like teams should not be allowed to discuss this until after the season ... it's like free agent tampering and its a distraction during the playoffs

Every Giants player will be participating in Tuesday’s walk though, including OLB Azeez Ojulari (quad).

Brian Daboll says Jason Pinnock has “turned the corner pretty quick.” Says Azeez Ojulari will be out here. Not clear where he stands. Daboll says there are some other bumps and bruises but nothing he considers serious

"Evan Neal had the lowest pass block win rate (71.9%) of any tackle in the wild-card round. It only added to his regular season struggles. Would expect the Eagles to attack the rookie right tackle. Philly led the NFL with a ridiculous 70 sacks this season."
Neal is much worse than Thomas was his rookie year so I am not expecting the same turn around. But he is getting a ton of experience this year so hopefully he can become at least an Average RT otherwise the Giants should not waste time moving him inside next year

I think he may be still dealing with that MCL. His feet don't move and he just ends up getting beat on the rush too often. Agree with you that his rookie year is worse than Thomas and wouldn't move him inside.

Here's the PFF comp ... I'd prefer Neal make it as a tackle. But if he fails better to make the change sooner than later ... Plenty of converted tackles have become great interior lineman.

Thomas 2020
OVERALL - 62.4
PASS BLOCKING - 54.7
RUN BLOCKING - 62.4

Neal 2022
OVERALL - 44.0
PASS BLOCKING - 47.5
RUN BLOCKING - 47.9

All of the Giants inerior linemna have been playing much better of late. Gates,, Glowinski and Bredeson have all have graded slightly below to slightly above average

The Bredeson trade is actually looking pretty good now
In exchange for a 2022 fourth-round draft choice, the Giants acquired Bredeson, a 2022 fifth-round selection and a 2023 seventh-round choice.

Those are ugly numbers!
Giants are going to need to call some screen plays to the right side early in the game to slow the Eagles pass rush down. Probably should chip a lot to that side on passing downs too.

Yeah, he definitly seems a step slow getting out of his stance and is getting beat a ton with speed rushes to the outside. Definitely still could be dealing with lingering MCL issues.

I'd expect, especially with this coaching staff, him to have a much better year 2. For now, though, need to do what's best for this week. If he can't handle the Eagles pass rush either have to give him a ton of help or rotate in Phillips and see if he holds up better.

I cant believe the NFL allows this this BS during the Playoffs
If I am Colts, Panthers, or Texans I'd have to think twice about hiring someone who is willing to take an interview while they team is in the Playoffs
And If I'm Wink or Kafka ... I wouldn't want to work for a team that doesn't understand that its not an appropriate time to request an interview

Hope we can keep both but if we HAD to lose one or the other, I think the Giants would be better off if they lost Kafka.
To be clear, nothing against Kafka but since Daboll has the offensive background I think the Giants would handle losing an OC better than losing a DC

We can conceivably get knocked out of the playoffs Saturday night and lose both our Offensive and Defensive coordinators on Sunday ... that would be a bad weekend

The Eagles put up 48 in the 1st matchup against the Giants, but just 22 points in the 2nd matchup.

I didn’t pay too much attention to the 2nd game against the Eagles since the Giants didn’t have anything to play for and were resting starters.
For those that paid attention to both games any idea what the difference was? Was it simply that Hurts was rusty? Did Wink figure something out?

You do know that Daboll interviewed for your job while he was still in the playoffs right?

So Daboll is sketchy since he was willing to take an interview with the Giants, and the Giants are a terrible team to work for because they had the audacity to request an interview at such an inappropriate time?

Eagles fan here. It was a few things.

1. Hurts was rusty AND still injured. They did not do any designed runs and they clearly told him to not improvise. Once you guys realized he wasn't running, the whole ride and decide thing that he does so well went out the door. That was huge problem.
2. No Lane Johnson. Missing the best LT in the game really affected us. FWIW, Lane hasn't given up a sack in something like 2 years so he's a huge loss. He will be back for Saturday FWIW. Thats as important as Jalen being healthy, honestly.
3. This is just my opinion, but these guys are very much in the analytics camp and I think through the last few weeks, Dallas and Giants specifically, they played pretty vanilla on both sides of the ball in the expectation that they could be facing one or both of them in the playoffs.

That's all I got!

Hurts was basically functioning at 50%. The Eagles also didn't have Lane Johnson. Those were the main differences to me.

Giants do not match up well at all against the Eagles ... Eagles have the advantage in almost every matchup. Even the Giants strengths are offset by the Eagles.
Dexter going against the strongest Interior line in the NFL, Thibideux going against the best off OT in the NFL.

I'm not overly impressed with Hurts ... He's surrounded by an incredible line and incredible offensive weapons but he's good enough in that environment ... most QBs would be.

Unfortunately I think the wheels come off the bus on Saturday. I'm expecting something similar to the 1st Game ... a multiscore loss
Jones will have his worst game of the year (3 Turnovers) as the Eagles dominate both sides of the ball and The Frankman will finally get a chance to say I told you so.

? They faced Green Bay in the 1st round and played the tough in the 1st half and arguably should have been up big. That was Eli's last time he looked like Playoff Eli that 1st half, but SO MANY soul-crushing dropped passes.

The boat trip gets much too much focus. It was a midweek trip and all the players were back at the training facility on time, some of them early. As long as they weren't late/weren't distracted I don't care about the trip. Guarantee you people wouldn't have batted an eye if they went hunting/took a drive down to touch the four corners of a state or some crap like that.

Right, but you were more critical of the team requesting to hire, and the candidate himself. So you think the Giants shouldn't have hired a guy with awful morals like Daboll who took interviews while his team was still in.

It happens man. Every year, to multiple candidates. This is their life, their career, their future. There shouldn't be a question of their character for taking an interview then, as those jobs could be unofficially filled well before the SB ends.

The Eagles ran pretty vanilla offense. Hurts didn't run much and when he did break out of the pocket, instead of going for yards, he got down and protected himself. The goal was to win the game and get out of dodge with the #1 seed and no injuries.

The offense really stalled in the red zone because of Hurts lack of running, but the Eagles did score on 4 or their 5 first half possessions and went into halftime up 16-0. Their first possession of the second half, they had a TD brought back on a penalty, then threw an INT in the end zone. They went up 19-0 with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd and just put it in cruise control after that.
