well it wasn't a chirp, Habs fan picking Leafs.  I understand it's a foreign concept to you since you have 27 teams

I didn't realize the goal was to pick players from your favorite teams.

Chicago and Montreal didn't have many players to select in this year's pool.

Habs fan picking Leafs to win the pool.  I’ll make sure I send you a pm with full context about rivalries next time I use a comedic emoticon.

congrats on your Blues game 1 stanley cup by the way!

I do this all the time.  In fact, if Montreal was in I probably wouldn't pick many of their players.  Can't recall the last time I did this pool and if Montreal was in but I'd wager I avoided Montreal players for the most part.

I don't gamble but there is a daily free "pick 3 players who are going to score" contest up here with Tim Hortons and I constantly pick Matthews when he's listed in the 'A' bracket. Doesn't mean I'm rotting for him, or the Leafs, just an "emotional hedge" I suppose as Dickey Dunn suggested. If they win, I win (hopefully my guys score) , if they lose, I win.

after 1 day:

1. Cav 24 points
2. falguy 18 points
t3. EStreet 16 points
t3. Getzlaf 16 points
5. chet 14 points
6. FoosballGod 13 points

1st Round Report Card

Best pick (so far):  1.07 Cale Makar (falguy) - although he's not the total points leader, he's averaging 6.00 a game.  It will be interesting to see what he compiles in a longer series.

Best value (so far):  9.02 David Perron (Getzlaf15) - most saw STL/MIN as a toss up, so Perron's 4.00 per game gets to play on. Can he keep it up?

Best value (so far) honorable mention:   5.09 Carter Verhaeghe (Chemical X) - selecting a player with 33 points at a 5.50 per game clip is impressive, particularly on a team expected to do well (obviously I'm talking about the Panthers, not Chemical X's 😉)

Biggest disappointment (so far):  5.07 Andrew Mangiapane (falguy) - averaging an anemic 0.86 per game, this 5th round pick did not deliver.  To put it in perspective, the average 5th round pick generated 2.74 ppg (not including Mangiapane's anchor) which is over 3x what Mangiapane delivered.  Fortunately for falguy, his player is moving on.

Highest drafted player to generate a goose egg:  8.09: Hampus Lindholm (Awmars1269)

Best performing last round pick (so far):  Ross Colton (Chemical X) and Charlie Coyle (Awmars1269) with 2.00 ppg

But, this is a marathon, not a sprint.  There are still 4 teams with double-digit players remaining (probably a result of 12 participants this year, whereas in others we've had 16).

i lost pavelski, barely……i’m left with 11/12 into round 2.  but pavelski was a 10th round flyer in a series they weren’t supposed to win.

I thought Makar would be a solid pick but made the poor assumption I could get more high-end Avs but by the time I picked 2nd most were gone.  Then I scrambled to pick a team that wasn't picked-over so took a chance on Toronto.

If Toronto had won game 6 or 7 I may have had a shot (although Chet has like 7 Leafs).  Once they lost I knew I had no chance regardless why my mostly useless Flames picks (Toffoli/Mangiapane) do.

I suspect whoever loaded up on players from Tampa/Florida (which team wins that series) will  be in great shape to win.

Crosby injury and Penguins loss after leading 3-1 likely killed my chances.

I almost took Makar in round 1, but thought I had a better chance of pairing up Gaudreau with Tkachuk until Foos showed up to destroy those plans.

1. Cav 171 pts.  7 left.   Draisaitl (EDM), CAR G, Svechnikocv (CAR), DeAngelo CAR, Trocheck (CAR), O'Reilly (STL), Necas (CAR).   So CAR vs EDM/STL

2) Rudnicki 163 pts. 6left.  Gaudreau (CAL), Landeskog (COL), Toews (COL), EDM G, Palat (TB), Nurse (EDM)
Hoping COL and EDM advance and EDM/CAL go 7.

3) Chode X 144pts.  11left. Rantanen (COL), FLA G, Giroux (FLA), Ekblad (FLA) , Verhaege (FLA) , Marchment (FLA), Lundell (FLA), Hyman (EDM), Schenn (STL), Forsling (FLA), Colton (TB)

All in with 7 from FLA.

4) Foos. 143 pts.  6left.  CAL G, Tkachuk, (CAL), Aho (CAR), Teravainen (CAR) , Dube (CAR), Sergachev (TB)
CAL vs CAL final here.

5) Falguy 141 pts. 6 left. Makar (COL), Nichushkin (COL), Mangiapane (CAL), Toffoli (CAL), Slavin (CAR), Kotkaniemi (CAR)
All six can advance Rd 2.

6) Chet. 137 pts.  3left...Chet is ####ed with one left from COL, EDM and FLA. Will battle it for 11th.

7) Getz 136 pts.   11 left....  Huberdeau (FLA), Reinhart (FLA), Krieder (NYR), Fox (NYR) ,Duclair (FLA), Kyrou (STL), Buchnevich (STL), Barbashev (STL), Perron (STL), Faulk (STL), Saad (STL)

If NYR beats CAR, has a solid chance to pass Cav. All 11 can advance past Rd 2.  Six Blues.  The Great One has picked the Blues also in the NHL Bracket Challenge.

8.  kupcho 132 pts...  12 left... MacKinnon (COL), NYR G, Panarin (NYR), Zibanejad (NYR), Burakovsky (COL), Copp (NYR), Compher (COL), Lehkonen (COL), Byram (COL), Vatano (NYR), Trouba (NYR), Kubel (COL)

Six COL and Six NYR. Could easily be leading after Rd 2.

9) Brasky 127 pts...  5 left... Doomed from the start with 5 MINN players.

10) E Street.  126 pts... 9 left... barkov (FLA), Hedman (TB), STL G, Thomas (STL) Niederreiter (CAR), Killorn (TB), Strome (NYR), Jarvis (CAR), Cirelli (TB).    FLA (1) TB (3) STL (2) CAR (2) NYR (1). Could do some damage if STL advances with TB and CAR and has 7 left after Rd 2.

11) awmars. 120 pts... 3 left...will battle Chet for last.

12) dicke dunn 106 pts... 10 left...  still upset I called him Dennis.  Kucherov (TB), TB G, Stamkos (TB), Point (TB), Hanifin (CAL), Bennett (FLA), Backlund (CAL), Coleman (CAL), Puljujarvi (EDM), CPerry (TB).   Needs TB to keep playing 7 game series.

The Rangers aren't even trying to play offense.  They've been in a shell just happy to chip it out.  Carolina will score if they keep this up

2nd Round Report Card

Best pick through 2 rounds:  1.01 Connor McDavid (Brasky) & 1.12 Leon Draisaitl (Cav) with 5.00 per game.  Shocking, I'm sure.  Cream seems to have risen to the top.

Best value (so far):  5.01 Evander Kane (Brasky) with 3.67 ppg.  (If you recall, this was Perron who still performed well in the 1st round to be the best value, but unfortunately for Blues fans he slacked off a little in round 2 and he'll be gripping a golf club going forward)

Biggest disappointment (so far):  I'm going to give this one to 4.11 Anthony Duclair (Getzlaf15) with only 7 points in 10 games.  Not what you want out of your 4th round pick.

Best performing last round pick is 12.04 Ross Colton (ChemX) with 2.09 ppg.  Not too shabby and he continues on.

Thanks again to @Aaron Rudnickifor organizing this.  I enjoy watching the NHL playoffs but this takes it to a whole other level.

Conference Finals Report Card

I find it interesting that the top 5 ppg* scorers are from teams that have been eliminated (McDavid, Draisaitl, Kaprizov, Guentzel & Marchand).  The top remaining scorer is actually the Avalanche goaltending tandem (3.40 ppg).  Top remaining goal scorer is 1.07 Cale Makar (falguy) with 3.33 ppg.

I'd have to say Rud's changes a number of years ago to increase the importance of scoring (as opposed to the first round of the draft being all Gs) has worked out.

Best value has to go to 10.08 Ondre Palat (Rud) at 2.47 ppg, much better value than a couple of name players (2.05 Victor Hedman with 1.76 and 3.06 Steven Stamkos with 2.35).  To be fair, we're operating with a much smaller sample size, and Palat's done about a ppg better than I expected, whereas Hedman and Stamkos are underperforming.  Again, small sample size.

Of all players remaining, only 12.10 Nicolas Aube-Kubel (kupcho1) has yet to put up a single point, although this Albertan Blutarsky still has a chance to improve on his 0.00 record.

*When I talk about ppg here, I'm using points acquired in Rud's scoring system divided by all the games that player's team has played (a little different from officepools).  It does one no good if the player is hurt or scratched; no reason to "inflate" their ppg average.

Congrats @kupcho1.  We are not worthy.

@Aaron Rudnicki, I'll send you a pm so we can figure how best to get you my money.

My summary... I drafted 7th and finished 7th.  Pretty fitting. I think I always draft a middle of the pack squad.

Perhaps if Toronto beat Tampa I would have had a chance.  My 2 Calgary picks in the middle were useless, as was my final 2 selections.  Even if those 4 players' teams moved on I doubt I would have got much value.

I will say that until this year I didn't think you could do well unless you went all-in on 1 or 2 teams but Rud had a huge variety and finished a solid 2 so it is possible. Although I'm still not convinced you can win unless you go heavy on 1 team and that team makes it to the final.

Maybe next year.
