2022 Rookies (3 Viewers)

I'm starting to work on my very early IDP league rookie draft board having to go 44 slots deep so started eyeing up the below, in no particular order at this point other than what Mocks are saying where they go in the NFL draft:

Kayvon Thibodeaux (DL)

Aidan Hutchinson (DL)

Kyle Hamilton (DB)

Devin Lloyd (LB)

George Karlaftis (DL)

Nakobe Dean (LB)

Travon Walker (DL)

DeMarvin Leal (DL)

David Ojabo (DL)

Jordan Davis (DL)

Myjai Sanders (DL)

Brandon Smith (LB)

Doesn't seem very big on LB this year and DL (DE/DT in my league although many of these are EDGE types that may play OLB in the NFL) seem to be taking up a bunch of the spotlight at the moment. Way early at this point and dependent on landing spot so will see who goes up and down this list.

Anyone outside of these 12 worth considering?

Christian Harris Alabama  should be 2nd round NFL pick. As Inside of middle LB. in top 12 for fun.

Cameron Thomas SDSU Edge has gained a lot of steam to be first round pick. 3-4 or 4-3 will make a difference. 4-3 and he will be top 10 for fun. 3-4 and looking at Chandler Jones like

Jermaine Johnson. Is the same. Probably early 2nd round NFL draft capital

Chad Mumba LB is another name to watch out for. Lots of late 2nd -203rd round draft picks have NFL success.

listing of LB listed in rankings by Tick and myself. 44 guys and where drafted. 75% in first 3 rounds

1st  13 (8, 27, 8, 30, 5, 12, 25, 8, 28, 10, 16, 19, 19,

2nd 11 (15, 16, 13, 21, 4, 26, 20, 26, 5, 25, 28)

3rd - 9

4th - 4

5th - 2

6th - 3

undrafted - 2

Also some other nice S names for your next 12 could be listed. Pretty good class for S.

This is great stuff.  Keep it coming.

I have my annual pre-Jene website aggregator that I'll continue to tweak (particularly the offensive guys post draft once we know landing spots) if anyone has some spare time to pick it apart.  Tend to devalue injury risk, but pump up potential (since this is fantasy football).

I'm still working on procedurally-generated tiers based on percent hit from draft position (WRs split into early-breakout and late-breakout), positional value in scoring system, and positional longevity for dynasty rookie drafts.  I plugged in the average projection for each player at Grinding The Mocks, and here are the tiers I came up with for Zealots PPR leagues:

  • Tier 1:

    Drake London
  • Chris Olave

[*]Tier 2:

  • Breece Hall
  • Kenneth Walker III
  • Isaiah Spiller
  • James Cook
  • George Pickens
  • Garrett Wilson
  • Jameson Williams
  • Treylon Burks
  • Jahan Dotson
  • Aidan Hutchinson
  • Kayvon Thibodeaux
  • Travon Walker
  • Jermaine Johnson

[*]Tier 3:

  • Devin Lloyd
  • Nakobe Dean
  • Christian Watson
  • Skyy Moore
  • Trey McBride
  • Wan'Dale Robinson
  • David Bell
  • John Metchie III
  • Calvin Austin
  • Alec Pierce
  • Jalen Tolbert

[*]Tier 4:

  • Kyle Hamilton
  • Daxton Hill
  • Dameon Pierce
  • Rachaad White
  • Brian Robinson
  • Zamir White
  • Jerome Ford
  • Tyler Allgeier
  • Quay Walker
  • Christian Harris
  • Chad Muma
  • Greg Dulcich
  • Isaiah Likely
  • Jelani Woods
  • Jeremy Ruckert
  • Cade Otton
  • Charlie Kolar
  • George Karlaftis
  • Pierre Strong
  • Tyler Badie
  • Hassan Haskins

[*]Tier 5: everyone else

Notes:

  • I know these are large tiers... the intent with this auto-generated tiering is that I break the players into tiers and do my very best to never move a player to another tier... within a tier, I can move players around a lot, but can't cross the borders.  So, large tiers are fine for this purpose.
  • This year's draft blows for offensive players.   I don't like taking IDPs in drafts, but based on the Grinding the Mocks projections, that's where more value lies this year.  Four DEs in the top 16 of rookie drafts is brutal.

I erased my Superflex tiering - I think I might have an error there due to what threshold I count as a hit for a SF QB.

However, I ran it for an IDP123 league, and the results were crazy... top-16 LBs were 1st tier, round 2 LBs were above top-16 EDGEs.

Hmm... what would you call a hit for a QB in a 12-team or 16-team SF league?  QB24/32 seems a bit too easy to consider a hit - if I have a QB that finishes 32nd, I don't think I'd call that a hit.

Probably somewhere around 15-18, many after that would be average or below average in a 12 teamer.

I don't play SF so not sure how that values out.

In my 15 team SF, 29 of the top 100 point getters for Points per game was QB. While you are certainly losing points to those with top 5 and 20, you better have 2 QBs to compete. This league is start 11 O and 11 D with lots of flexibility

Looking.at scoring for position

#1 QB = Regular Season Champ, scoring champ, Super Bowl winner. (Rodgers, Allen, Goff, Wilson, Lance, Lock)

#2 QB was 2nd scoring team, division winner, 3rd best record. (Murray, Stafford, Watson)

#3 QB. Was #5 scoring team. Made playoffs. (hurts, Wentz, Jimmy G)

#4 QB was #6 scoring team. Made playoffs. (Mahommes, Cousons)

#5 QB was #8 scoring team (Herbert, Darnold, Bridgewater

#6QB was #3 scoring team. Made Super Bowl. QBs were Russell Wilson, Big Ben, Daniel Jones. Great WR and Kelce in TE premium

#7 QB was #10 scoring team(Jackson, M. Jones)

#8 QB was #11 scoring team (Brady, Hill)

#9 QB was  #12 scoring team (Burrow, Tua)

#10 QB. Was  #4 scoring team. Made playoffs (Tannehill, Ryan, Winston)

#11 Qb. Finished as scoring #7. (Prescott)

#12 QB finished as #13 scoring team. (Carr, Dalton)

#13 QB finished  #9 scoring team (Lawrence, Fields)

#14 QB finished as #14 scorer(Mayfield).

#15 QB. Finished last. But to be fair, this team started with adding FAs Sept 1 with 840 players already rostered. (Boyle)

other positions

RB #1(#7), #2(#2), #3(#3), #4(#11)

WR #1(#1), #2(#3), #3(#5), #4(#8)

TE #1(#2), #2(#3), #3(#5), #4(#15)

PK #1(#8), #2(#12), #3(#10), #4(#11)

DL #1(#1), #2(#12), #3(#2), #4(#14)

LB #1(#1), #2(#3), #3(#2), #4(#5)

DB #1(#4), #2(#3), #3(#5), #4(#13)

scoring on season was 55% for O and 45% for D

why in my mocks I have QB going 1, 2, 3 despite it being a lower class. Got to take the chance. First D comes off at 18th pick in my mocks.

Big play scoring matters when it comes to tiering, but my first run through I have 8 LB, 10 DL, and 2 DB's identified.

Rd 1 3 down LB - Devin Lloyd, Nkobe Dean, and Christian Harris (late rd 1 is fine, early rd 2 preferred)

Early rd 1 star DL - Aidan Hutchinson, Kayvon Thibedeaux, Travon Walker (big play - early rd 2 preferred but can justify late rd 1 in this pool. Tkl heavy - not til later rd 2)

Top 50 potential 3 down LB - Channing Tindall and Quay Walker (may be best available by mid rd 2, but prefer near rd 2/3 elbow)

Rd 1 potential star DL - Jermaine Johnson and George Karlaftis (rd 3 types, but with enough draft capital can bump up to late rd 2)

The Kyle Hamilton tier (completely depends on ww replacement value - can justify as early as rd 3)

Potential rd 1 DL - Cameron Thomas, Drake Jackson, and Arnold Ebiketie (similar as Hamilton, but after)

Top 50 safety that gets a lot of tackles - Lewis Cine (same as DL tier)

Wildcard Day 2 LB's w/3 down skillset - Anderson, Chenal, Muma (it's harder to find LB's in my leegs so I'll probably value these guys w/Johnson/Karlaftis/Hamilton)

Probably not, but we'll see where he gets drafted - Myjai Sanders (skeptical he has enough snap count upside)

Depends on your IR limits - David Ojabo (will be a priority for me in 2 leegs and not on the board in 2 others)

Anybody I'm missing? Among those already listed above I don't think any of the DT's have enough sack upside to consider, I don't draft rookies with issues in the box and Jaquan Brisker fits that mold, and I don't remember Brandon Smith standing out in Iowa games + everywhere I read he's a day 3 guy.

I was digging into my spreadsheet, and I was remembering wrong - I'm using hit rate by draft position, WR early breakout, and value of a hit in my league scoring systems.  There's no longevity built in.

What rank is the 2nd QB on each team? How often to people start other positions in the Superflex, and how much are they giving up?  I have a Zealots SF league where I won the title with basically one QB, because I didn't lose a ton when I used a different player at the position, because it was either Kittle (TEP) or Keenan Allen.

So many variables...

Well interesting draft.

  1.  Quay Walker LB Green Bay. Should start from day 1. Exerts past Campbell as guy in no time.
  2. Aidan Hutchinson DE Detroit. Know what you are getting
  3. Kayvon Thibodeaux DE NYG. This assumes gets DE. If LB drop ala Mack unless big play league
  4. Devin Lloyd LB Jack. I probably would have had higher till Muma selected. So not sure how align with Oloukun signing also
  5. Troy Anderson LB Atl. Love this spot and draft capital
  6. Jermaine Johnson DE Jets. Again. This is about if DE or Edge. If LB on MFL drops
  7. Nakobe Dean LB Philly. Injury concern but if good to go will be stalwart and excellent landing spot
  8. Christian Harris LB Houston. Could start from day 1. Going as high as 3 would not have me shaking head
  9. Travon Walker DL Jack. If DT and DT required could go higher. As DL not bad. I am still a little weary
  10. Channing Tindall LB Mia. Great place and ability. Just draft capital
  11. George Karafalitis DE KC. No qualms with being drafted higher. My league emphasizes LB more
  12. Arnold Ebekitie DE Atl. Day 1 impact.
Kyle Hamilton S Baltimore. Instant impact but I put low value on DB. But if your league thinks more highly he could go top 5
  13. Lewis Cine S Minn. Harrison Smith near future replacement. Should play now
  14. Boye Mafe DE Sea. Sack specialist
  15. Brian Asamoah LB Minn. have to wait a year on him.

others. Daxton Hill, Chad Muma, Jalen Pitre, Jaquon Brisker,  Sam Williams, Josh Paschal,  jT woods

Has anyone seen any rookie IDP rankings?  I hope Bramel does his chart again.
In the main forum it was mentioned that Jene said on Twitter he isn't doing the post 100.....😕

And of course no rankings post draft on the IDP side to even help....the 2 sets that are there don't even have Rookies listed. I posted in that same thread to ask for the rankings, but we will see if we get noticed. Otherwise we may need to find something else out there that we can use like what Isutigers posted above.

Related: DLF has a promotion with a new DFS company - Underdogs. It reminded me to cash out of Monkeyknifefight from their last promotion 🙂

The guy who played QB, RB, and LB got drafted as a LB by the guys who finally used Codarelle correctly. Hmmm. Troy Andersen is going to be higher on my board than my leaguemates, I can tell you that.

I’m trying to take notes through this, but they’re bouncing around a bit.  I should have used a pencil, not a pen.
I had a post summarizing their findings, but it was too confusing because they disagreed on some guys. You can still get the gist of it if you listen to the podcast.

I recall last year Jene Bramel writing that he wouldn't do a big board again, that he was moving out of the IDP space, so I took a stab at it on my lunch hour yesterday. I can't promise the one active draft I'm in right now didn't overly influence it. 😅 Curious as to your thoughts, tho!

https://twitter.com/DynastyTripp/status/1521595233586364427?s=20&t=R7yG6K57833c1NXXvBO_yQbfXg5JBhkp-tXgQVEo6CI
I would have Dean in tier 1. Tindall and Harris with Anderson. I struggle on who to take with my #33 pick out of the 3.

14 team SF. I put all the 3 QBs in tier 2. I expect all gone by pick 20 in my SF but 27 is floor.

I have David Bell and Jelani Woods up a tier.

chad Muma. Love him. Hit his situation for 3-4 years. Down

Some notes, I pivot league to league but high level let's assume SF + big play scoring + DT elig + deep rosters:

*I'd rather not pick Hutch or KT late rd 1, but I will if that's how the board falls and I can't find a buyer to move down. I'll only try to move up if someone is actively trying to move backwards and not finding a market, which I'm not expecting.

*Similar story with Lloyd and Quay early rd 2, but I will consider getting more cute with trade down scenarios.

*Andersen is my mid-late rd 2 target - early read is I can use Dean being drafted as a trigger. He's why I'd consider getting cute moving away from Lloyd/Quay.

*Harris and Tindall are my Andersen contingency plans, but I think their snap count ceiling is lower short term and think they're both less likely to earn sustainable FT roles. Still, I think they're strong enough to justify getting cute with Lloyd/Quay.

*I agree with Bloom - Hamilton is the rare safety I'll consider prioritizing, combo of talent and situation. Whether he goes about here or above my Andersen contingency plans depends on my depth chart. Can't imagine that's before early rd 3 regardless.

*It's not that I don't like Karlaftis and J Johnson (I do, especially the former) - it's that I think any difference between them and Ojabo/Ebiketie is marginal - I'm trying to position myself at the bottom of this tier. Use T Walker as a trigger because I expect him to be reclassed from DT, but if this tier starts going and T Walker is still available roll the dice. And add Wyatt's at the bottom. Prelim plan, probably need to get into the end of rd 3 to get one.

*I don't have any priorities beyond this point. Neither Muma nor Chenal went to favorable situations and while I like some of the remaining edges more than others I don't expect any of them to top a 60some% role before yr 3. Couple of my leagues will have 3 safeties on my board, but they're DEEEEEP.

*Overall - if you can get into the '23 class, cool, but don't expect it cause that's what everyone is trying to do. Assuming you have to stay put, once out of the top 7 get as many picks as you can between the mid-high teens and low 30's.

You listed a top 7.  adeiko_FF has ADP across 423 SF rookie drafts and there's a clear top 8. Hall, Walker, London, Burks, Wilson, Jameson, Pickett, Olave.  Which are you excluding?

Okay, I put together Jon Macri, Bloom, DynastySanta, tripp, and lsutigers lists to come up with a ranking.

Some notes:

  • I just left out DTs including Walker.  I also left out edges that MFL called LBs (Bonitto, Mafe) and CBs.  Sorry, I made this for myself.
  • I did some weird stuff with rankings using tiers by round for those who included charts... if there were 4 players in someone's top round and 3 in their second round, I ranked all of the 1st round guys 1 and all of the second round guys 5, and the third round guys 8.
Here's the average ranking I come up with (why is it so painful to paste Excel into the message board?):

Code:
Player	Pos	Rd	Tm
Devin Lloyd	LB	1	JAC
Kyle Hamilton	S	0	CIN
Aidan Hutchinson	DE	0	DET
Kayvon Thibodeaux	DE	0	NYG
Quay Walker	LB	1	GBP
Nakobe Dean	LB	3	PHI
George Karlaftis	DE	1	KCC
Troy Anderson	LB	2	DEN
Jermaine Johnson	DE	1	NYJ
Christian Harris	LB	3	HOU
Lewis Cine	S	1	ATL

I am shocked by how many raters have the DB's so far up the list.  I just can't fathom spending that much draft capital in FF drafts for a DB.  There just isn't a big enough difference at the position for it to make sense.
I’d even extend that across IDPs in general. Waiver wire is deep in preseason and weeks 1-2.

As ya'll mentioned previously, I think a ton has to do with scoring and league structure.  My only IDP league is a 16 team, 40 roster + 10 taxi, single QB salary cap with mostly balanced scoring except for QB.  While it's easy to land CB's late in drafts or WW, there isn't much on the WW except for unclear situations where a D starter emerges (and even then, some guys are on taxi's).

Each year is different but if I'm drafting in the 3rd, and I'm looking at the 3rd or 4th tier of RB/WR vs. a top 3-5 Edge/LB/S, I'd typically go D (not CB or DI) unless I really liked a RB/WR's situation or talent.
