What's especially bizarre with all of this money floating around is why they cannot figure out how to separate football or football+basketball from all of the other sports. Why can't a university's football team be part of one conference while the rest of its sports are part of another?

There's no reason to send Rutgers or USC non-football teams across the country to play each other because of the football money grab. Just end these silly movements, settle on the 2 or 3 super conferences for football, and let the other sports do their own thing too.

In sports like hockey, this is what happens. In the conference of my alma mater, Carnegie Mellon and Case Western play football with us but nothing else. OTOH, Chatham and Franciscan don't play football, but are in the conference for everything else.

It can be done if the will is there.

I feel bad for him because I feel like what we're really seeing is an 18 year old kid not ready to make some of these decisions we're foisting upon them nowadays. I know his mom was very interested in him going to ND, but he seems like he liked the money or opportunities elsewhere. Fair enough. But what it seems like we're seeing in him, and likely more eventually here, is youth + money is a tricky combination and especially now that we're talking about freshmen with checks, not NFL rookies.
 
Elijah Brown, one of the top QB recruits in the nation committed in June to Stanford. Wonder if he is reconsidering. Wonder whether a bunch of commits to PAC-4 schools are reconsidering. I feel really bad for those programs and for those recruits as well.

Huh? A few B1G Network talking heads are predicting PSU to contend for the conference title. The big game is always duh Ohio State. Notwithstanding a self-inflicted face plant, this team could exit Ohio Stadium undefeated.

A kid from our local HS who we know committed to Stanford for baseball at the beginning of summer. I don’t suspect this will change his mind as academics played a big role in his decision, but I’m definitely interested to talk to him about it the next time I see him at a function.
 
If it really is two pairs Stanford/Cal and Wazzou/Oregon St and they really can't get it together in terms of going together I wonder if it is going to be a staring contest as to who will leave for their next conference given that whoever is left in the PAC last would presumably keep the NCAA credits and make it a merger with their destination league to keep that.

A little surprised at the ACC talk - not because of the geography....okay not ENTIRELY because of the geography but because I was under the impression that any expansion would necessitate a reopening of the Grant of Rights and with it open the exit hatch for schools such as FSU that want out.

If that isn't the case somehow would ESPN really open up their wallets enough to get a Western with Stanford/Cal each week for that late window? Seems nutty but all bets are off in the brave new world.

Oh and so the Beavers are America's team this year right?

While I am sad that the PAC 12 has been ripped apart, the pure incompetence by Larry Scott is what landed them here. It’s like they were clueless of the game being played working on a streaming only deal for Pac 12 games. Steaming only? Complete morons. They got what they deserved.

Who got what they deserved? A few of the big wigs at the top? What about the millions of players, staff, fans, etc that get screwed by this? "They got what they deserved" doesn't seem all that fitting or appropriate of a statement.

If Oregon stayed it sounds like they would have been making 30M a year and would be a constant playoff contender in the diluted Pac which would have an auto bid for their champ. Is that better than making 60-70 and likely never making the playoff in the Big?

I’m not judging I’m asking. Fsu likely has to leave their crap conference because every school around them will be making 60-70 a year. I’m not sure that’s a problem for Oregon. In fact it seems like Oregon may have had a recruiting selling point telling families all their games would be on the west coast.

Now they flip this to say, you're kid's gonna get a ton of national exposure since you'll have games all over the place. That's what all the east coast teams recruiting those west coast kids have been saying for a long time.

I don't think the TV deal was 30MM. Is was closer to 20 with the caveat that the schools needed to help push subscriber numbers, which the Arizona president rightly pointed out was akin to selling candy bars as a football fundraiser. Who wants to do that? And, being the king of a watered down conference just so you can lock down a playoff berth shouldn't be the goal. Do I really want to see Oregon get Alabama in the opening round of 12?

To your second point, what good is it telling families that their kids' games would be played on the west coast if you can't, you know, FIND A THE GAMES ON TV? I mean, I get your point that having games on the west coast would me they could attend in person, but if Granny Beatrice can't make it, is she really going to subscribe the Apple TV to watch? Hell, we have Apple TV and I have to have my 8 year old sons help me find it.
 
The 12-team Playoff will be made up of the six conference champions ranked highest by the committee, with no minimum ranking requirement, and the six highest-ranked teams not among the conference champions. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded Nos. 1 through 4 and will receive a first-round bye. The other eight CFP teams would play in the first round (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7, No. 9 at No. 8) held at the higher seed on a campus site or another location selected by the higher seed.

Oregon also has wins over Wisconsin, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State in recent history, so I welcome the new world order. I'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather face Nebraska, Northwestern, Illinois, Indiana, Rutgers or Minnesota than I would Washington State or Oregon State if I'm being honest. I hate losing the rivalries, but picking up some gimme games? Great!

Just thinking out loud:

Could end up having a quasi-academic conference if:

1) Fla St and Clemson leave the ACC
2) Cal and Stanford join the ACC
3) Maybe the ACC adds improving program Tulane
4) Rice would be a logical add for academics ... but for football?

So with that ... you'd have the Research Triangle schools (UNC, NC State, Duke), Ga Tech, U Va, Stanford, Cal, & Tulane. Plus whatever else remains of the ACC.

I guess Notre Dame never wants to wrap both arms around football conference membership ... but such a league would be a good fit for them.

Oregon is getting a half share in the B1G (around 30m with $1m annual escalators) until 2030.

With the 12 team playoff Oregon will be making the playoffs plenty enough in the B1G

They have had some incredible offenses with just explosive players and they have had some stingy, punch you in the mouth defenses. Unfortunately they've never occurred in the same season.
