Well, Miami pulling defeat from the jaws of victory makes me feel a little better after ND's loss.

I'm trying to think of a worse loss. I'm sure I've probably seen one, but I can't think of one.

Grove City College cracks the D3 top 25! I'm just thrilled that my alma mater sets at 23. Just making the playoffs would be awesome if they run the table. :towelwave:

Another win today. In your face Geneva!

How the heck was Mary Hardin-Baylor ranked #22 coming into this week with a 1-3 record?! Yeah, their 3 losses were all against top 10 teams, but it’s 3 losses!
As I said on the D3football.com comments, it was reputation.

It was a good run with Kelly
He’s crapping the bed in the SEC. He was a mirage. The smartest thing he did was coach ND during USC’s down period, but let’s not inflate how bad he also was. Ask LSU fans what they think now.
You forget what it was like for years before him and you're seeing what it's gonna be like after him.
ND hasn’t hired a good coach since Holtz. Being the C student amongst a sea of failures does not make him a scholar.
My man, you are my favorite Domer. You always keep it 100. 👍

USC is going to lose 3 games minimum this year. Absolutely awful. Was at the game - at least it was an entertaining finish.

I’m of the school where it’s ok to criticize from a position of love. Will always love my team and root for them, but man we are a multiple-decade hot mess top to bottom.

The hard part now is Freeman looks to be the next Faust - fans love him personally, but he looks in over his head.

ND reminds me right now of the Yankees. Cashman now has enough of the NY media believing making the playoffs is a successful season. You’re the Yankees and one World Series in 20+ years is off brand for who you’ve been. Step one to fixing it is having to have the hard conversation with the mirror.

There are examples like that in every league. Sports at the highest level simply wasn't competitive like it is today. Once billionaires needed something to blow money on thinga got harder for the cowboys, Yankees, and domers.

Fair. I guess the upsetting part is the “shrug” reaction like what can you do. What you can do is put your best foot forward and acknowledge the goal is still to climb the mountain. Instead a lot of those orgs seem satisfied with social media selfies at base camp.

Not sure whether or not you came up with this, but what a great saying.

Yeah, Kelly was 11-2, 11-2, 11-1, 12-1 last 4 years. Sure, thats seems like a c grade. You're back to c grade coaching now if that considering losing to Marshall and a 3 win Stanford team last year.
You cannot just look at the record in a vacuum. Kelly won 94 of his 113 total wins against unranked opponents (39% win percent in ranked games too).

You and I will never see eye to eye on Kelly, but 10 win seasons against poor teams and embarrassing losses against real teams is what I’d call a C coach. Freeman is currently scoring less if it makes you agree with me more.
I understand that but I also think that's pretty close to the ceiling for notre dame. They just don't have the top end talent to regularly compete with those handful of other elite programs. So he won the games he was supposed to win and kept them in the playoff discussion until the end quite regularly which was pretty fun to be a part of.

Thank you for saying what we’ve all been thinking

Does anybody else randomly think about how Mario Cristobal had a game won against Georgia Tech but didn’t take a knee because he probably thought “we need the reps” with a grunting sound behind it and they ended up losing because of it? Because I for one cannot stop thinking about it.

Reinforces everything I've ever said or thought about the clown.

Yes - but I also randomly think about Reggie Ball throwing the ball in to the stands on 4th down.

I had no idea who Mario Cristobol is (had to look it up), but based on this thread I was picturing Greg Schiano (patron saint to upjumped gym coaches), but smarter. Or dumber. One of those -- probably splitting hairs.

Dumber but same idea, yea. I dunno, Schiano’s thing about rushing the kneel down with grown NFL players was pretty elite stupid guy stuff.

It's almost like Schiano showed his lack of common sense with that BS. Mario has shown over and over and over that he can recruit but his high-school level when it comes to coaching in-game.

And he's incredibly stubborn. Can't establish the run game by pounding it right up the middle? KEEP TRYING! PUSH HARDER! He's a simpleton.

Stu Mandel on Penn State's lack of 'explosive plays' this season.....

I wasn’t aware until this question that Penn State, which has won every game handily — had a low number of explosive plays, so I went to CFBstats and sorted by number of 20-plus yard plays and … what in the world?? The Nittany Lions are tied for 132nd — dead last among all FBS teams — with just 12 in five games. Per TruMedia, they rank 125th nationally in explosive play rate (95th), which it defines as runs of 12-plus yards and passes of 16-plus yards.

Buddy, that’s not cause for concern, that’s riot-in-the-streets level panic.

Why is this stat important? Because explosive plays are one of the strongest predictors of victory. I asked ESPN’s Bill Connelly, who baked it into his oft-cited SP+ formula, for some stats from the 2023 season. He said teams that produce more 20-plus yard gains than their opponent win 70 percent of the time, and teams that make three more than their opponent win 84 percent of the time. Last year’s four College Football Playoff teams, Georgia (No. 1), TCU (No. 4), Ohio State (No. 10) and Michigan (No. 17), all ranked in the top 20 in 20-plus yard gains.

The Nittany Lions’ lack of explosiveness has not remotely affected them to this point because their defense has allowed just 12 plays of 20-plus yards, tied for third-best nationally. But there’s a notable caveat: Penn State’s four FBS opponents to this point rank 98th (West Virginia), 100th (Illinois), 121st (Iowa) and 131st (Northwestern) in explosive play rate. Everyone else’s defenses are shutting those teams down, too.
