I get the gag, but what's crazy is that's kind of not ridiculous given that what we know of old country was blues and folk-influenced while Western was jazz/swing/big band influenced.

I just looked it up. That's fairly accurate. Country was southeastern and Appalachia-influenced while Western was southwestern and border states.

Very common phrase when we were kids. They're very similar in that they're predominantly white people with similar instruments and similar tempos. They're just borrowing music from either blacks, really poor whites, or immigrants. And who they're borrowing from makes the difference in the country and the Western.

At least that's my dilettantish way of explaining it.

Nobody uses it anymore because modern country might as well be hip hop or corporate rock. That's my editorial take on the whole thing.
