2023 Detroit Lions 9-3: "Lions Go Marching Out of New Orleans with Win over Saints" (29 Viewers)

I like Campbell's aggressiveness. I was upset when he was letting time run off the clock the last two minutes against Seattle. We have one of the best red zone offense in the NFL. You go for the kill. Not some 80 percent FG opportunity to provide a coin flip win opportunity. Campbell set us up for a 40 percent chance of winning. Give the offense the chance to win the game in regulation.

Gibbs A Gap (btwn C/G) stats last year:

44-407-3 13 FDs 11 runs 10+ Long of 58+72 YAC 116 Forced Missed Tackles 13

Even if you Jerome Ford away the two breakaways that’s still 42-277

Crimson Tide OL was uncharacteristically mediocre last season, PFF grades were middle of the pack for SEC teams

Eff using Craig Reynolds or Bam Knight for the Monty role, let the kid be a football player

“He’s just a weapon, you can line him up all over” always sounds great at OTAs & TC. Hear it with a lot of fast players, hardly ever comes to fruition. 11 targets for 57 yards is not getting him into space those are Najee dump offs.

Quick hitters & dive plays, get a crease & he’ll blow through the second level. Pin n pull or Duo or Counter all all fine concepts but I watch CMC run inside or take traditional RB screens 20-30 yards & I’m thinking “maybe less is more.” Stop being exotic and let him have a shot A gap/B gap plays.

2021 started out 0-10-1, last 6 went 3-3

He also dropped a pass that could have been an 80+ yard TD.

3 defenders with the angle

bad drop, could have been an easy 25, but it wasn't like he had nothing but green between him & the end zone

Edit - that is a nice scheme though, route takes a step outside running behind Reynolds on the clear out, when the defender bites he cuts inside on a post route to gain leverage and blows past him, tremendous acceleration

we gotta stop with this coulda shoulda woulda crap though / would have scored in KC if he hadn’t of slipped

sure & Swift would have been a Wk 1 hero if he doesn’t drop the game winner v CHI his rookie year

This is Gibbys week to showcase his skills!!

He does have a toe sprain, LP

Did Not Practice:
  • RB David Montgomery (thigh)
  • LT Taylor Decker (ankle)
  • C Frank Ragnow (toe/rest) — Downgraded for veteran rest day
  • RG Halapoulivaati Vaitai (knee)
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (knee/hamstring)
  • S Kerby Joseph (hip)
Limited Participant:
  • WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (toe) — Upgraded from no practice
  • WR Josh Reynolds (groin)

[Birkett]

Dan Campbell said Vaitai and Moseley are out; Montgomery, Decker, Kerby are all "improving," will continue to work on the side and see where they're at after today.

None have practiced all week. I imagine Will Harris will be alongside Walker at S.

So now the rule is Jamo can return to the Lions facilities and work with trainers, but can not participate in practice. This is different than explained earlier.

OUT
Decker (ankle)
Joseph (hip)
Moseley (hamstring)
Vaitai (knee)

Doubtful
Montgomery (thigh)

Questionable
Reynolds (groin)
St Brown (toe)

The TO stat is the most important stat of all! Give a team more chances to score beat you in the NFL they usually so. Same in MLB if you are giving a team 4 outs instead of 3.

The win % only matter if you make the needed plays to win after the gamble. So that is a crap shoot.

Concerned about St Browns toe issue. That would be a killer to the offense. Those big toe injuries tend to linger. Ragnow played a whole season with a bad big toe and it still troubles him.

As much as we talk about coaching decisions/calls by refs, etc. it's really on the players to just control the ball better than the other team.

Lions elevated offensive lineman Dan Skipper and safety Brandon Joseph from the practice squad. Neither was signed to the 53-man, strictly one game call ups.

Important game. Seattle loss combined with the injuries smashed our momentum. Need to see if Campbell and players can be ready and get up after being knocked down.

I'll be very impressed if they can take it to Atlanta. Will crowd come out stoked or will they be in wait and see mode?

Also hoping to see Goff display leadership and toughness here.

Watching Atlanta's All 22 this week, they disguise their coverages really well. They'll show press man but really they're in quarters. Play a lot of Cover 3 and you've got to know where S Jessie Bates (#3) is at all times.

Not that impressed with their defensive front. Even down two starting OL there is an advantage to be exploited.

Amon-Ra should be OK, got in a couple full practices and seems to have avoided anything serious with the toe sprain. Not as confident about Josh Reynolds (groin) who has leads the team in first downs through two games. Antoine Green cleared the protocol by Wednesday, Raymond has been balling on low snap counts, LaPorta seems to have Goff's full confidence. Everyone is focused on Bijan v Jahmyr but in my mind the Lions WRs making plays is the critical element offensively.

On defense we simply have to get sacks, one way or another. We get it Hutch, you're being held every other snap. If you do your rip move and put yourself into a hold bc the OL's arm is temporarily around your neck, they won't call it, no matter how high you flail your arms. Keep battling, the sacks will come. At S we have a big problem. Tracy Walker III wil see his first extended action but of course the scary part is who is alongside him. Whether it's Melifonwu or Harris, hard to have confidence in either. Thankfully Ridder is a QB riding on training wheels.

Falcons are a good team and Arthur is a better coach than he gets credit for (trivia - was college teammates with Ben Johnson.) Run defense has been solid but Robinson is a really special back. Should be able to outscore them but there are no easy wins in the NFL.

I think they get it done.

This is a really interesting point. Trolls forced Jerry Jacobs off social media this week but we know the perpetually miserable are only a small segment. I think they’ll be loud doubt we draw a top 5 crowd or break the decibel record again.

I don’t have any questions wrt Jared’s leadership. He’s not a tough guy, has never pretended to be, but I love how steady he has been. Regardless of how it’s going he stays the same.

His teammates believe in so who cares what anyone else thinks. That deep contested shot to ARSB (27 yards) showed me a lot - first throw after the pick 6, LFG.

Not a lot of positives about last week but down 10 they went TD, defensive stop, score to tie it up. He’s playing with a lot of confidence rn.

Lions win this game as they will not lose 2 in a row at home. This is the NFL so I do not say "with ease" but it should be comfortable.

Want to see a big game out of Gibby at his coming out party, and see at least 2-3 sacks from the D. Hutch is due.

Prop bets on Gibby. OU rushing 47.5, receiving 24.5. I like the over on both. I know he is going to bust at least one big chunk play.

Great game by the defense, but I thought Goff looked pretty bad today. Missed some easy throws and that pick where missed a wide open ARSB can't happen. Laporta looks amazing as well.

Vikings now O - 3

their Iowa TE dropped the ball in the end zone that became a double deflection interception

hit him in the hands

That was a very tough throw and catch. Cousins threw a fastball away from Hockenson. The Vikings end of the game clock management was so awful.
Cousin sat there for about 20 seconds setting up the play call with 1st and goal with 30 seconds to play. Even if he did not throw an INT, there was still only time for one more play. Bizarre for a team which won so many comeback last minute wins last season.

I only give Cousins's part of the blame. How does that coaching staff not have two plays called ? Cousins had his hands on his helmet like he was trying to hear the play.

So lucky last year and now regression is coming for payback.

Tough game to judge. Ridder did not pose any type of threat so I was never concerned they could score much.

This is the NFL and Lions took care of business and got the W. That is all that matters.

Want to see more of Gibby though. Seems like the type that needs more touches and can break a big one. Use him like McCafferty and Kamara. Feed him!

pretty good day especially when you consider we got Sewell out of position, Glasgow starting RG and 4th string rookie played over half the game at RT

For one week anyways some pretty good production out of what started out as the #6 pick but ended up being Gibbs + LaPorta. On a day when the offense overall was less than 100%.

166 total yards
1 td

“F-k it,” Branch responded. “F-k it. I’d rather show him that I’m not scared to tackle him, and I’ll take the flag, to be honest.”

garbage penalty, Branch was in perfect tackling position when bijan decided to lower his head, nothing Branch could do at that point

He is quickly becoming our most valuable defensive player. Probably still Hutch, but Branch's impact has been massive.

A real bargain at #45. And we can be sure that just like St. Brown he has a list of every team that passed on him.

Basically the same 31 teams.

Lions also passed on him 3 times were lucky as he dropped.

Knew he was a value and moved up to get him.

I'm fairly sure Tom Brady didn't hate New England for being dumb enough to pass on him 5 times.

Ravens lost their home opener to Indy today in OT

they don't play another home game until week 7 v the Lions

at Browns at Steelers and then a trip to UK v Titans

I'll be at that Oct 22nd game in four weeks
