I fully agree that serious veteran (not another highly drafted rookie) competition needs to be brought in, but am not convinced Minshew is that guy. Haven’t researched which vets will be free agents, but with the incoming rookie crop looking strong, perhaps some proven vets will shake loose around the league.I've said it before and I'll say it again - would LOVE to acquire Minshew this offseason to bring in some competent competition for Zach, while also serving as a more than serviceable backup who provides some actual upside.
most QBs in the NFL have enough skill and talent to be functional in "clean" pocketsZach didn't look good today. It wasn't even that he was confused by coverages or that Belichick out-schemed the Jets or anything like that. He just completely, unprofessionally didn't take care of the ball from the end of the second quarter to the beginning of the fourth.
I guess those are the lumps you're going to take in your first year or so of actual starts, but that was especially painful today. I hope he learns you can't just flip the ball downfield and have it land incomplete.
He showed flashes today. I'll give him that. If you just looked at the stat line, you might have thought, "not bad" for his second time against Belichick, but it was harder to watch.
Thing is, if you get him in any sort of rhythm he can make great throws and be precise and accurate. I watched the game with my brother today. He's a Giant fan. Wilson made throws today that my brother was marveling at and then my brother was stunned by how he didn't take care of the football and threw hopping or off of his back foot into nowhere in that stretch of play. It nuked his whole day.
Oh well. I knew missing Breece would be huge. Perhaps -- perhaps -- there's a silver lining in all these clouds and that's that we'll get a full year to see if Zach has it or if he doesn't. This really doesn't fall on the coaching or GM right now. It's that you have a team that's sort of ready and a remedial quarterback.
PFF tweeted out the other day that when kept clean, Zach has one of the higher completion rates in the league. When under pressure, he's bad. Like Sam Monson pointed out it was historically bad, and that at some point you have to factor that in to any analysis about Zach (PFF claims that clean pocket stats are more predictive of QB success in the long run than stats under duress).
Anyway, another day, another dollar, another way to live with a life so intolerable. Meet the Jets.
With Moore being ignored again and his comments after the game...ive gone from a 0% chance that he is dealt to 50%/50% - JD/Saleh really dont like malcontents. They have the leverage with his contract but I now think if they can get something close to value they may deal him. This is getting bad.
Agreed- glad they kept Moore....but its on the OC to figure out how to use these weapons - you do see flashes of great gameplanning then it morphs into send everyone deep and have Wilson run aroundWith Moore being ignored again and his comments after the game...ive gone from a 0% chance that he is dealt to 50%/50% - JD/Saleh really dont like malcontents. Sadly, this is where I'm at too. Although, to be fair, they basically ignored Berrios on Sunday as well.
I cant figure out if LaFleur knows what he's doing. Occasionally he draws up some very creative (and often effective) misdirection type plays that produce big chunks of yardage. But he seems to completely discount a lot of the play types that would seem to fit some of his most talented players (Like Moore)
Where are the slants? Where are the bubble screens? Where are the drag routes? If they wanted to extend his punishment by ignoring him in his first week after his break...that was really stupid. This was one of the easier wins left on the schedule and a must-win in the eyes of the fan-base to validate the progress they've made....and they blew it.
The fact that Joe Flacco, Mike White and Josh Johnson all had 400+ passing yard games in this offense tells me it's not the OC, and it's Wilson. I've seen some creative play-calling.
What I will say, is I know Zach is on the "smaller" side - but I don't get why they don't encourage him to run more and/or have any QB designed runs. Zach's best trait is avoiding the pass rush, but he's not able to stop and set up well and makes some dangerous/dumb throws while on the run. It seems many of those times, he has 10 yards of field in front of him after avoiding the rush, but instead makes some off balanced dangerous pass. Look what Mac Jones (who runs like Brady) was doing. He was gaining yards in chunks on the ground and he's a zero athlete.

What was the keys to the game and how did you all stop the Bills or keep them to 17?

Rush four, still get reasonable pressure, really good play in the secondary. Sauce is all that, so is D.J. Reed. They're a formidable group. I can't tell you what the exact schematics were, at one point the announcers were talking about zone, but it seemed like a lot of man at the corners.
The key was they got consistent pressure rushing only four guys and dropping guys onto coverage. Allen seemed confused at times, which is rare for him. Also Sauce, even at pick 4, is looking like the steal of the draft. Guy just makes plays. What was the keys to the game and how did you all stop the Bills or keep them to 17?
It was almost like a “box and 1” in basketball, in that it seemed the Jets went man coverage on Diggs, with Reed and Sauce, but the rest of the defense played zone. What was the keys to the game and how did you all stop the Bills or keep them to 17?

There's a lot of green pride bleeding thru these posts, it's obvious you all feel the Defense is turning a corner and starting to come together as a unit. I hate talking coach speak or being vanilla about it but it does feel like those times when you watch a team grow up in front of your eyes.It really is just fascinating to watch the pass rush. Even guys like Sheppard (who is a total JAG) can make plays because EVERYONE has to be accounted for. I mean....how about the Sack by Johnson yesterday. Allen was out on the edge with plenty of space in front of him, and JJ closed and tripped him up JUST in time. That was a game changing play from the rookie. Clemens is always in the mix as well.
In terms of the standings, this unexpected win basically makes up for the let down against NE. But now they need to come out of the bye, go up to Foxboro and steal one more. Seriously can't believe its November 7th and I'm bummed at having to wait 2 weeks to watch the Jets play.
And FYI......Q Williams played 74% of the snaps yesterday. I'm all for rotating MOST of the guys to keep them fresh (hoping JJ gets more snaps as the season goes on, as he has shown growth) but you have to play Q as long as he can go. He's that impactful. 60% was just not cutting it.
I ddint like passing on Fields from the start. After they lost the #1 and after that Ohio St run I figured Fields as the clear #2. I cant see how you can pass on his skills and how he did against top notch competition for essentially potential. But then several other teams passed on him so something must have been up - and of course polished prospect from big school doesnt always end up being better than the potential from a smaller program prospect - see Darnold v. J AllenSo, based on what we've seen so far.....would you swap zach for Justin fields if given the chance?
Obviously he had his struggles early. And we still don't know each guys ceiling as a passer. But fields running ability is just game changing.
We all loved the guy after the show he put on in the national semi finals. I still think it was a mistake passing on him.
I watched this game at a sports bar since I was in NY and wanted to watch all the early games. This was the most I have watched them this season and their D is legit. Sauce Gardner looks like a tremendous pick and could be a shut down corner for years to come. While watching the game I was most impressed that Jets fans can spell JetsDefense - elite now and ready for a run - DL played great - DBs are fantastic - still would like a stud LB but thats for next year - even the quiet 1st rounder Johnson made a huge play
. I would, and wanted Fields at the time as well (although I'm never very confident on my QB evaluations). So, based on what we've seen so far.....would you swap zach for Justin fields if given the chance?

And to think... the conditions at the stadium are not even the real reason they moved the game. It was just to allow snow clearing/emergency resources to focus on the general public, as opposed to a football game.I can’t believe they moved the game with weather this moderate. Wussies. NFL has gone soft.

Yeah, he sucks. That team is ready to win now except at the QB position. He's absolute and total trash. If you can't see it by now I dont know what to say.
Its 2022....the NFL has done EVERYTHING possible to allow teams to move the ball and score points. and he just had negative passing yards in a half. Literally can't complete 7 yard screen passes. I'm not sure he's even a backup quality player.
If this team had even league-average QB play they'd be top 5 in the league. If they had that and a healthy Hall they'd be a super bowl contender. (even with the O-line injuries)
They will waste this group of young talent if they dont go get someone else next Spring. (preferably a free agent).
Total joke.
I think that would be fine, as long as the long term plan isn't affected by the signing.Im betting Jimmy G is signed in the offseason - not sure if that is much better but cant be any worse.
Yup - maybe they can get on track with the Bears just running the ball down their throat and giving Zach little to doThey're not going to bench Wilson so you might as well get used to it.
He looked terrible today.
