2023 Philadelphia Eagles - Complete waste of a season finally comes to an end. (1 Viewer)

This is a great thread on the issues with the offensive game planning.

How to Fix the #Eagles Offense

The Passing Game
Jalen Hurts has an expected completion percentage of 61.6% this season, the 2nd lowest in the NFL. Hurts is presented with the 2nd most difficult throws on average in the entire NFL. If you want to know how to fix the offense, start with finding some easy buttons in the passing game. Hurts Completion Percentage Over Expectation is +4.9%, the highest in the NFL, which says that right now the system is making it as difficult as possible on the playmakers and the playmakers are performing above what is expected.

So what are those easy buttons?
Throw the ball between the numbers - The Eagles are 8th in yards per attempt and 6th in success rate when throwing between the numbers, but they are 30th in % of passes thrown between the numbers. Life gets much easier for a defense when they don't have to worry about covering 60% of the field.

Running Back Screens - The Eagles are 4th in the NFL in success rate on RB screens but they rank 28th in usage

Slants - The Eagles are 7th in success rate on Slants but they rank 22nd in usage

Curls - The Eagles rank 1st in success rate on Curls but they rank 28th in usage

The Running Game
QB Runs - There are 10 teams with at least 10 designed QB runs (sneaks excluded). The Eagles rank 10th in success rate (36.6%) and 7th in EPA/attempt (-0.08) but they have the 4th most such runs. Either Jalen Hurts is healthy and can run through contact or he isn't. If he is, then use him. If he isn't, stop calling runs for him and zone reads for him to slide down behind the line of scrimmage.

Pony Personnel - The Eagles have the 6th highest rushing success rate in the NFL out of Pony Personnel (2 RBs on the field). They have the 2nd lowest amount of rushing attempts from this package. (They also have the 3rd highest passing success rate from Pony Personnel but are 18th in usage).

Run Blocking - The Eagles offensive line ranks 18th in blown block percentage over the last 4 weeks. The OL is too good to be that bad. At a certain point you just have to execute.

Stop Turning the Ball Over - The Eagles have fumbled 9 times in the last 5 games and thrown 2 interceptions.

The Bottom Line
The Eagles offense has star players all over the field, but they have used them as a crutch instead of doing everything possible schematically to put them in positions to succeed. Everything that has been off with the offense can be fixed and it needs to be fixed fast.

The offense has a nice schedule of defenses to get their swagger back and figure out some things before the playoffs, when they need to be full throttle to carry a defense that is much harder to fix (more on that later).
This certainly dovetails with what I've seen and complained about all year.

Sirianni's got to have noticed this as well.

I can't see Robinson back as OC next year. Either we finish well and someone else hires him, or we don't and he gets canned.

Sirianni today, paraphrasing "Not firing anyone, not taking away playcalling, we control our own destiny"

Not unexpected you can't fire your OC or take his duties away at this point in the season.

BUT

You gotta talk to him and say "buddy fix this its trash"

I would think Nick has had a one on one to go over everything laid out in that tweet. These are not dumb guys. They've designed these offenses with a clear strategy in mind but sometimes guys get tunnel vision on game day.

I just can't get the Minnesota game out of my mind when it comes to this. We started out and whatever we were doing didn't work. And someone along the way said "Lets just run on these guys they can't stop us"

And they didn't. I think we ran for like 260 yards that game.

I haven't seen anything like an adjustment of this kind since this game. Everything is the same now every game.

That game is why Swift is still the 4th leading rusher. They've used him as much as they're obligated to it seems.

pretty eye popping numbers
if we dont see some real improvement i dont see how the OC keeps his job
I was most surprised by the expected comp rate to actual. Shows how well Hurts is throwing the ball. Now you can still argue about him making the right reads, but accuracy is no longer an issue for him.

his accuracy was great all last season
Yeah, but "some people" still won't give him credit. This shows it wasn't a one year fluke.
The Guy has the best Oline and WRS in the NFL yet somehow gets praised for putting up underwhelming QB #'s ... He threw for 22 TDs in his "MVP" caliber year ... 2 less than Daniel Jones rookie season playing behind the Worst Oline and WRS in the NFL ... I mean c'mon. He's on Pace for 25 TDs and 13 Ints and 5 fumbles lost ... still with the best oline and still with the best WRS and somehow he is still in the "MVP" discussion with guys that are on pace for 30 plus TDs and less ints on far worse teams!?!?!?

The Truth is Hurts is statistically a top 12 QB on easily one of the best teams in the NFL and all of his metrics are down this year.
If he was on a bottom 10-12 team he'd be a backup QB
Remind me again of actually what Daniel Jones stats were this year before he got hurt?
Dont worry about Jones ... The teams are night day. Jones got hurt because he was hit more than any QB in football up to that point.
You should be concerned with Hurts .., He's mediocre in the best possible situation and that's not going to last forever as we are starting to see.

This puts into stats what I've felt all year. Our talent is carrying the team over the play calling.

How in the world does Swift have only 45 targets the whole year? He's 16th among RBs in targets behind guys like Stevenson, Ford, Tyjae ****ing Spears. Why would it not be mandatory to fit a Swift screen pass into the game plan every week?

Why have we gone away from the AJ slant? I bet if we looked at his 6 week, 125+yd run, we'd see a bulk of our slant yardage for the year was to him in those 6 games. It's an unstoppable play.

Why are all the routes 10+ yards down the field? Also very little motion and crossing action. It's all vanilla ****.

Johnson needs to really show something these last 4 games.
I was watching a pod and they showed a graphic that traced every AJ Brown route last week. Nothing but go routes down the sidelines and not a single route across the middle. Just mind boggling
Because they have another stud WR that catches routes across the middle
How the Hell could Eagle fans complain about their WRs ???
Hurts throws jump balls into double and triple coverages and these guys make plays .... Be happy about that

Did you not read any of the last 2 pages? No one, not a single person is complaining about the WRs.

What's the consensus on how Swift / Gainwell and the RBs going to be used this weekend? The two weeks have killed me. I've held Gainwell as a handcuff, but damn I'm thinking about starting him over Swift.

Be happy about that
Huh?

What's the consensus on how Swift / Gainwell and the RBs going to be used this weekend? The two weeks have killed me. I've held Gainwell as a handcuff, but damn I'm thinking about starting him over Swift.

I only own swift and he's been on the bench for weeks. I would only start one of these guys if desperate. At least until they figure out what the hell they are doing

Wacky giants fans. Can't wait to see them in a couple weeks

Sorry. Your guess is as good as all of ours. We've been screaming for them to use Swift more and in better situations. They just don't want to do it.

For those who missed it nfl network was talking about the Eagles. David Carr made a mention about sitting hurt for Marriott’s but it’s not as bad as people are thinking or the Philly media is making it. What Carr was saying and speculating is Hurts isn’t healthy and maybe hurting the offense and run game more staying out on the field. Why not give Hurts a game or two off and let Marcus who is a similar style run the offense and see if it helps hurts. He ends his comments and theory saying a healthy hurts and the eagles can definately win the sb.

I really don’t see where he’s wrong other then yeah we got two important games coming up SNF and following MNF the week after however his comments taken for as they are make a lot of sense. Now depending where they are after the next 2 games maybe they could afford to do it but presently if Hurts is hurting the club more not 100% then why keep him out there and risk further or worse injury? There’s gutting it out and doing great then there’s gutting it out to where you being out there is worse for the team and you. All people saw on this was the headlines and went ballistic

You and I will be right in the end. We’re batting 1.000 on this topic.

Don’t expect any apologies.

ETA - I may be crazy, but not crazy enough to start Mariota over Hurts.
This is not the time to be benching your starting QB (even if he is a little hurt). Mariota is not a good QB and IMO the Eagles would almost certainly lose both of their next 2 games if he’s the QB. Also if Hurts really is hurt, why is he holding onto the ball so long? I would think they would want to call plays for him to get that ball out quickly.

I agree. I would rather a project QB over Mariota. Shouldnt even be in the league.

My comment to DJax about “us” being right is the long term prospect of Hurts. If I’m wrong I’ll eat crow but I don’t think I am.

hurts already better than dak. you must really hate dak then

By what metric? It ain’t personal man. Put Dak on your team with those weapons and line, he demolishes Hurts numbers.

The cracks are already starting to show.

daks also been in the league what 6 more years than hurts?

But I thought he was better already?

This is a brand new offense for Dak and company. Year 1. We all see what Kellen Moore’s predictable system is doing in SD.

Dak was drafted in 2016, Hurts in 2020.

feels like hes been there forever. hurts has def had more success
No he hasn’t.

I bet every coach would say it's easier to have those 4 opponents spaced out and sandwiched between "cupcake" games.

Obviously would be easier to spread them out. Fortunately, they have the 6-7 Seahawks on a 4-game losing streak and then 3 "cupcakes" to finish. Should go 4-0 to finish.
Would be an EXTREME amount easier if they were spread out, and not playing all of them on shorter weeks than our opponent.

The Seahawks at home in a do-or-die nighttime game is not that fortunate. And Arizona/NYG are not "cupcakes"... they're teams that beat the Cowboys, Packers, etc. Giants are on a 3 day winning streak. Not saying we shouldn't be favoured, but overall they've had an absolutely brutal schedule this year.

Ultimately you know that won't happen. Johnson will be allowed another season to "grow" which will cause the offense to waste another year of Jalen and AJ, DSmith and Goedert. Swift will be gone leaving us with Gainwell and Scott again.

Not saying we shouldn't be favoured, but overall they've had an absolutely brutal schedule this year.

No worries. We'll just disagree there and I'll stick with Sharp's analysis that it's the 10th easiest. To their credit, it's much tougher this year than it was last year when the Eagles faced the 2nd easiest schedule.

Of course every game is a challenge in the NFL. But no team has an easier finish than the Eagles last 3 games with Arizona and Giants twice.

To add, I know Eagle fans are super sensitive to the easy schedule. There's no need to be as it's not anything the team or fans can control. It's ok.

For Eagles fans, why do you think they're hesitant to use Swift more?
I truly do not know. It's not like they're using Gainwell more. The usage doesn't show that. They just have reverted to early 2021 where it's pretty much all pass except for token runs at the end of halves or games. When they do run, it's unimaginative dive play into the meat of the DLine. Not sure where those runs plays from earlier in the season went where they'd break off 8-10 yards a run. I also don't believe it's because they want to preserve him. Swift is most likely gone next year. Why wouldn't they use him for all he's worth.

Then we have Penny who's a healthy scratch every week. Why do they even have him rostered? Depth? IDK they don't care about the position so it would be better to just grab a guy off the trash heap if someone got injured and use that roster spot for another position.

I really want to see Penny play this year. Yes he's injury prone, but he's healthy now and clearly is talented. No idea what gives there.

I feel like it should have been lightning and thunder all year with Swift and Penny. They both are a threat to run and catch so you can't cheat on D towards run or pass. But both offer different styles.

pretty eye popping numbers
if we dont see some real improvement i dont see how the OC keeps his job

So you are saying you are more concerned with the Eagles and their QB than your own team. That's hilarious. Tommy Devito has 8 TDs. If he gets 7 more somehow, it might be time to pay him $45M per year in a contract extension.

My team is 10-3. Our concerns are about how far we go in the playoffs and your concerns are "what do we do next to not be a bottom feeder"

That's kind of the point though. While its nothing any team can control, you can control how much you point out the fact of how easy it is. But never point out *as frequently* how tough the 6 games stretch we had was. Its not that we are sensitive to it, its just a lame talking point. I'm surprised you haven't yet jumped on the "Refs favor the Eagles" bandwagon just the same, in the vein its something that no team can control but "its a fun narrative to bring up to excuse the Eagles' success" and while you might not be outright excusing the team's success, it sure feels like it.

There has to be more to the story unless the Eagles think he's the 3rd string QB.

Maybe based on his injury history they are saving him for the playoffs???

I dunno I think at this point we just have to guess. My best guess is while they like Gainwell b/c they drafted him, they *know* the RB of the future is not currently on the roster and are doing their best to preserve them all for the playoff push, Penny/Swift included. They know bot of these guys have an injury history and if they run them in the ground too early, they *really* have nothing left after that. So this is my hypothesis off of what I have seen and what I think the reasoning is. I could be way wrong, but its an educated guess at best. They cut a LB that is a good/great special teams player that got claimed by SIX teams, instead of cutting a guy that has less than 10 carries this year. There has to be legit reasons behind the scenes for keeping Penny over a guy like that.

Hoping I am right and we start mixing in Penny with Swift down the stretch for a Thunder/Lightning combo for a few games.

Me too. I have Penny in a draft and go league that runs through the playoffs.

We've been screaming for them to use Swift more and in better situations. They just don't want to do it.

For Eagles fans, why do you think they're hesitant to use Swift more?
I don't know that they truly are. I think it's mostly because Gainwell knows the offense best, AND he's an excellent pass blocker, and just as good a receiver as Swift (maybe even a hair better). So Gainwell is the third down/2 minute drill RB. Swift is far more dynamic as an open field runner but Gainwell is probably under-rated on the whole, especially by Eagles fans (mostly because he doesn't have that same dynamic look, isn't as quick etc.)

The strength of schedule thing has always been a pet peeve of mine.

To me the NFL schedule has turned into 17 one-game seasons. Every week, every game is different. You really can't predict anything anymore. It's always more about when you play somebody at this point.

The Eagles will be fine. They are just too talented and battle tested. Let's see what happens when the playoffs start. At this point every team's goal should be to just get in. Because once that happens all bets are off.

Right...When no team has had an easier stretch of games then it's likely you'll have a hard stretch of games.
This is what I mean though. It's "easiest stretch ever" and "okay you had a tough stretch too". That stretch was vs 4 of the top teams in the league, all in a row, all 4 teams coming off extra rest. That was absolutely brutal and the toughest stretch anyone in the league has faced and it's not even close. But sure, let's keep having posts about how 'cupcake' their end of season was, from posters who didn't once mention how brutal that stretch was for them.

Right...When no team has had an easier stretch of games then it's likely you'll have a hard stretch of games.

Correct. And no team in the NFL had a harder stretch of games this year. Right?

Correct. I don't think anyone disagrees this is as tough as you can get:

At Kansas City
Home for Buffalo
Home for San Francisco
At Dallas.

Are you saying anyone is disputing this?

For what most feel is a top 5 team, going 2-2 on that stretch is about what folks would expect, I'd think. Although, I didn't think the two losses would be complete beatdowns like that.

Funny that we keep having posts about how difficult the four game stretch was for the Eagles from posters who didn't once mention all the cupcakes last year or the bulk of this year.

Exactly.

I've said a I don't think the panic is warranted as they've faced some really good teams. But that doesn't register for some reason.

Maybe ... Devito has a higher QB rating than Hurts

Agreed. It just matters getting to the tournament. And it's a two-edged sword for their division. Yes, the Giants and Commanders are pathetic. But Dallas is really good. So it's a balance.

And I wouldn't surprise me to see your average GM with average roster building skills give out way above average contracts to players that don't deserve it, further wrecking your chances of any future hope or success. Gonna be a Happy Holiday season for us Eagles fans doing so trust me.

You’re right about that. But if the Eagles have an early playoff exit, Howie is going to get flamed. I’m already hearing the chirping on sports talk radio.
As he should. He didn't invest proper resources into areas he knew we would get worse at like LB/S. The up the middle defense is getting torched and going from the best pass D overall to the 27th or whatever we are now and THE WORST 3rd down defense in football is inexusable.

At the same time, not expecting any regression knowing all this stuff would be kind of crazy too. I just don't think any of us thought we'd fall this far off. A lot of things went wrong this year compared to last year, and the injury pendulum definitely swung back to a more regression to the mean or past the mean, considering the injury luck we had last year. But its football and dems da breaks. Guys WILL get injured. Older guys usually DO get worse. Etc etc. A combination of a lesser talented roster, coordinator turnover on both sides, much more injury *bad luck* and a much tougher schedule (despite what the Bible of NFL Strength of Scheduling might say) might have been just too much to bear to literally repeat the success that we had last year. And it shows in what we see on film/tv, the stats, the play etc.

Now, Howie is also a long view/big picture kinda guy and I think the fact we are still 10-3 at this point considering all this and in the driver's seat to still get the division title with *Super Cupcake games* left on the schedule to actually/possibly/highly likely to repeat a 14-3 season really speaks volumes to what he really did build, taking the half glass full look at things and the view that the future is still bright b/c we have key studs that are young at key positions. Thats the NFL and the reason I love it way way more than its counterpoints in basketball and especially baseball where there is no real salary cap, rich owners can spend literally as much as they want, and the best/richest teams stay good forever if they can afford to. A Hard salary cap is good for the entire league and it makes putting together a dominant roster year over year very very tough.

Lets see where the chips fall after week 18 but I suspect we will all be feeling a lot better, but not as confident as we were last year at the same point.

Go Birds!

The reality is that it doesn't matter. You have no choice in your scheduling and the Ws and Ls add up the same regardless of the sequence. The Eagles will be in the playoffs and a tough out.
Yeah, there is no way that's correct.

We played KC where we were coming off a bye, but oh, so were they.
The next week we played the Bills on short rest since the KC game was a MNF game.
The next week they played SF where SF was coming off 10 days rest.
The next week the played Dallas were Dallas was coming off 10 days rest.

We played arguably four of the top 5-6 teams in the league, either coming off a bye/mini bye/extra rest, back to back to back to back. Spreading them out over multiple weeks, effectively limiting the amount of tough games against better rested teams in a row would have absolutely made a difference. Do we still lose to SF and Dallas? Maybe/probably but the idea that the way the schedule shook out had no impact is carazy!

OK, lets spread those games out and say Philly goes 4-0. Now since they were spread out you lose 2 of the 4 easy games before hand due to looking ahead and lose 2 of the 4 easy games afterwards due to victory hangover. Now you're 8-4 over those games instead of 10-2. I'd say the NFL did the Eagles a favor compressing all the hard games together making their already Cupcake* schedule easy as Pie*
