2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees (1 Viewer)

Also - Willie just turned 90. So yes - he did have a magnificent voice. But it’s obviously and understandably not quite the same anymore. He kind of just talks now.

Willie Nelson.
Willie intersects with rock in a number of different ways. He should have been in decades ago.
I might agree if he didn't sing in a complete monotone. He's terrible.

Wow, I couldn’t disagree more. His voice has incredible character and expression. The furthest thing from monotone. Now his vocal tone does have a nasal quality to it - maybe that’s what you’re getting at.
You must have listened to some songs of his that I haven't heard. His voice is unique, I'll give him that, but no range at all in the ones that I have heard (which isn't that many as I can't stand his singing).

3.33 Octave Vocal Range

Pretty darn impressive. By comparison, Freddy Mercury has a four octave range.
I like Willie's voice enough, but where is the E♭5 in the song cited in that link? Maybe in that falsetto yodeling mess at the end of the song? E♭5 is so far beyond the next note down (A4) that I think the A4 might be a truer endpoint. :2cents:

Still, my guess is he gets in.

Still no Phish
Not sure how the nomination criteria works when their first song was over 25 years ago, but they still haven't finished playing it.

This is ####ing funny.

reminds me of the Colbert Report joke when he was interviewing Rush. He asked, "have you ever played a song so epic that, by the end of the song, you were actually being influenced by yourself from the beginning of the song?"

"have you ever played a song so epic that, by the end of the song, you were actually being influenced by yourself from the beginning of the song?"

LOLOLOLOL

That's not even because we like to rip on Rush in the music threads. That's just freaking hilarious no matter what band you're asking, so long as they have a tendency towards long, epic songs.

The White Stripes should be in. Not only are they worthy due to merit and longevity, but they should be in because they fully embodied a rock-and-roll spirit in a tough decade for it. It was a decade where even if you rocked you had to have a cosmopolitan ironic distance from it (The Strokes, Interpol), or it had to be something you could also dance to (dance/disco punk of the aughts). The White Stripes were pure rock and blues and did both like they were playing a barn that was on fire. Every record they put out was pretty magical, up to and including writing a riff that is in the international consciousness it riffs so hard.

Rage against the machine made it.

With missy elliott and willie nelson
3 classic rock acts!!!

Whatever it was about rock music that I grew up loving, didn't entail a Hall of Fame. I was always interested in the induction ceremony jam session, but none of those really blew me away, so I kind of ignore the whole thing.

As a musician, I watch it every time because there’s always a couple of moments that make it worth it, whether it be a performance or a speech or just marveling at the amazing string of tunes people like Pat Benetar wrote when I was a teenager. Every year, I might not love all of the folks being inducted, but there are always 3 or so that are very important to me that are Must See, even if 1 or 2 disappoint.

Being totally honest, my biggest complaint is seeing the state of some of these guys' hair. Like dyed black straw, if you touch it, it would crumble to dust.

Like, there wasn't ONE bottle of conditioner in England in the 70's? I find that hard to believe.

Not just their hair. Their entire being. It’s so sad to see your childhood musical heroes look like frail old boomers, and then if they can barely perform or move on stage, it’s depressing.

As depressing….catching a live performance on TV of a band you loved as a college student (Crowded House, The Cure, etc) and they cut to the audience and it’s filled with grey-hairs. that’s not me YET, but I didn’t expect to share fandom of these bands with a bunch of old folks. :(

Just marveling at the amazing string of tunes people like Pat Benetar wrote when I was a teenager.

Don’t want to burst your bubble, but Pat didn’t write many songs. I liked her as a teen, too. Hit Me With Your Best Shot, We Belong, All Fired Up, You Better Run, Heartbreaker, Shadows Of The Night, Precious Time, Looking For A Stranger, and I Need A Lover were all covers. Little Too Late, Love Is A Battlefield, Sex As A Weapon, Le Bel Age, Invincible, Treat Me Right, and Don't Walk Away were all written by other people. Several other songs that are leftover were written by her husband / guitar player . . .and the ones Pat was credited on, he shared the credit. Still good songs and strong performances, but Benatar was mostly a singer / performer.

I know.

I’m a singer/songwriter/drummer/guitarist myself, who gets lost for HOURS down musical YouTube rabbit holes.
I’m playing to the general audience by saying “Pat Benetar” since I don’t expect most folks to know what I’m talking about if I say “the string of amazing hits Neil Giraldo wrote”.

He didn't write many either. Almost all of Pat's hits were covers or written by others for her and Neil. But to the casual fan, they wouldn't care either way.

I am when it comes to Rock HOF stuff. I will be salty until Blue Oyster Cult gets in.

Lol.
The guitarist in current my band is old friends with Buck Dharma & Eric Bloom, and past members Albert & Joe Bouchard. So she’s with you on wanting them in!

Me? The nerdy high school student in me was finally happy when Rush got in ;) and The Cure too.

Dammit, you coulda made a Blue Oyster Cult joke, but now you can't cause you admitted you a Rush fan.

I go from Rush to Velvet Underground to Jonathan Richman to The Spinners.
No need to limit ourselves in such an amazing world of musical variety. Greatness can be found in all corners of the universe.

Whatever was going on, it was probably related to the state of their teeth.

This year’s nominees are:

  • Sheryl Crow
  • Missy Elliott
  • Iron MaideN
  • Cyndi Lauper
  • George Michael
  • Willie Nelson
  • Rage Against the Machine
  • Soundgarden
  • A Tribe Called Quest
All the above should get in sometime as I don't believe the HOF is true just RNR.

Sounds like we’re headed towards the same conversation we’ve had for years. The range of “rock and roll” spans so many sub-genres that have been conveniently categorized by record execs, producers, DJs, etc. When in reality, the influence in “rock” comes from multiple levers.

This is one thing that the RRHOF, in my view, has gotten right.
Yeah, we've danced around this tree a few times here over the decades, haven't we?

Agree with all you've said. Those who limit R&R to "white guys with guitars" conveniently forget that there are more exceptions than there are rules in their views on the subject.

I make a fair amount of “hot takes” but saying Willie Nelson can’t sing is simply preposterous.

I think he’s referring to 1990-present Willie cause 70s/80s Willie was 🔥

Bump for 2025. Preparing for the end of days. I always assumed that Phish would never get nominated unless the world was near its end. Plan accordingly. Well deserved, boys from Vermont.
Once they started letting bands in that Jann Wenner and his hipster successors hated, about 8 years ago, I figured Phish’s time would come.
