2024-25 NBA Thread: New Pope shocks world in opening statement by asking why Bulls gave Patrick Williams all that money (31 Viewers)

Bobby Portis just got suspended 25 games for taking Tramadol.

He alleges he thought he was taking Toradol (which is allowed). Kind of excessive, IMO.

If that’s the reality of what happened, then yes, likely excessive. Unfortunately there’s no way to validate that, and everyone busted almost inevitably says some variant of the same “oops, that was an accident” message. So, 25 games it is. I’d argue it’s justified, as it sounds like it was a med prescribed to a trainer who then gave some of it to Portis. I can pretty well assure you I wouldn’t take someone else’s prescription if it could cost me millions. Seems like he’s got the funds to have someone run out for a (correct) prescription if his own.
Yeah, if ignorance was an accepted defense, nobody would ever get clipped for PED's.
More so than the defense of ignorance, it's a low level opioid - something sitting between codeine (available over the counter in many developed countries) and hydrocodone (Vicodin). I'm guessing it is not heavily abused, as compared to pretty much any other opioid, nor is it performance enhancing.

Also, isn't deep vein thrombosis what derailed Bosh's career? Is that also what Ausar Thompson was out for last season and the start of this one?

San Antonio is gonna get Flagg now, aren't they
I hope so. They are a good organization that is trying to do things the right way. I don't want the ****ing Pels or Hornets or Wizards to get him.

He told the Athletic he plans on going back to Duke. Think I'd rather make 10 million playing college hoops at Duke than making whatever to play for the Wizards.

And yes, I know he's full of crap, but still....awfully tempting to stay if these teams wind up with the rigged lottery ball.

Money wise, it's not the first contract but the second contract that you need to leave early for in his situation. It could be a $40m mistake to leave a year later.

I mean, with the power of compounding and his ability to start investing earnings at an earlier age than previous generations of players, he could be set for life before that 2nd contract ever gets discussed.

That’s a blood clot right? Not good. I guess it’s not in his lungs, so that’s a positive, but if he has to get on blood thinners that could be curtains for his career.

San Antonio Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss reminder of the season with a deep vein thrombosis in right shoulder.
This will also keep him from getting the number of games played needed to be eligible for DPOY.
Yea he was like -1500 I think. Somebody just hit on a big lotto ticket.
So who gets it now? Jaren Jackson Jr?

He isn't going back. And that's not even really what he said. It was more along the lines of " I would love to come back, if I didn't know what's in front of me".

Even with NIL, there's just no comparison with the life changing money he'll get as the #1 pick.

That family has had a plan in place for a LONG time. Now they're 6 weeks from the finish line.

I bet it'll be Mobley as the Grizz slide a little bit due to their difficult schedule for the rest of the year.

Bummer news day, but what little news there is seems encouraging, long term. We'll see.

At least we have the Bobby Portis example to learn from, and his meds don't get entanlged with Pop's... Also saw a report that Pop drove himself to the practice faciity today. Not sure what the separtion is in the medical world between coaching and driving with regards to the recovery process, but hopefully it indicates he can return to coaching soon; and more hope that he doesn't have an in-game incident.

Now keeping an eye on De'Aaron Fox news. I think he was postponing surgery on a dislocated finger until the end of the season with hopes they could make the play-in. Might as well shut him down too, and just finish the season with Castle getting max playing time and tutor time from CP. Then again, one of my main interests in the new Fox configuration is to see what kind of role Devin Vassell carves out (needs to have more of an off-ball role).

I've been skeptical Wemby would have a long and healthy career, but I don't think anybody would have predicted DVT would be the first reason why he missed extended time. And while I don't have a ton of ill-will toward Fox, I don't exactly feel sorry for him that he demanded a trade to a team that's apparently going to bottom out again. Unless they do get Flagg, that would suck.

Complete list of active players on Spurs roster taller than 6' 8":

  1. Sandro Mamukelashvili, 6' 9" (19 DNPs this season)
  2. Charles Bassey 6' 10" (20 DNPs this season and currently nursing a knee injury.

Alas, Steph Castle will step up and damage our lottery odds, but at least I'll get a sandwich out of the deal.

Blazers are going to beat the Lakers tonight.

It'll be a rocking fun crowd too.....Cling Kong goes for 20 and 20.

After this one, it'll be tank city here. But tonight, it'll be lit.

Betting markets have JJJ at the top, for whatever it’s worth

Hey nerds - I hate Bill Simmons but the trade value list is something I always like as a jumping off point for debates.

How about a draft that is what team accumulates the most win shares, awards, playoff wins, etc over the next 5 years? Sort of a starting a franchise from scratch but it's not about next year, or even the year after, it's a semi-long game. A set it and forget thing, and hopefully we remember this in and still are alive in 2030.

So #1 pick, do you take Flagg or Wemby? Or do you go SGA or Tatum? Or think about the next couple years and take Jokic or Giannis or Embiid? :lmao: kidding about that Embiid thing.

No idea how to properly weigh the playoff wins and awards and +/- or whatever, but we can figure that **** out. I would wait until after the 2025 draft to do this.

I didn’t see children born out of wedlock as one of the categories.

I've actually had a clot in my lungs (pulmonary embolism) and, it was subsequently discovered, also in my legs (DVTs), so I've been following this story with some interest. From what I understand, the fact that it was in his shoulder is actually a good sign, since it suggests that it was a result of a specific blunt-force trauma rather than something genetic. Apparently that's fairly common among athletes.

The thing to understand is that it's not really the clots themselves that prevent you from playing. It's the fact that they need to be treated with blood thinners, and it's very dangerous to do anything that involves a lot of contact when you're on them, because you bleed a lot more (including internally).

The source of my clots is still unknown, but it was likely some combination of genetic factors, which means I'll be on blood thinners for the rest of my life. (That -- and only that -- is the reason I'm not in the NBA right now.) :lmao:

In Wemby's case, it sounds like they think they can use thinners to treat the clot for a few months, after which he should be back to normal. But of course you never know. Christian Barmore missed most of last year with clots. The Pats activated him off IR for a very short time, and then he went right back on. My guess is that they lowered/eliminated his dosage and immediately saw new clots being formed, so they didn't want to risk it

Despite being out for the year, I think Wemby is still going to lead the league in total blocked shots:

Wembanyama 176
Brook Lopez 104
Walker Kessler 102
Daniel Gafford 96

Ditto with Dyson Daniels in steals (if his season ended today, thankfully he's still healthy):

Daniels 152
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander 100
Nikola Jokic 90
Jalen Williams (JDub) 88

I feel like every night I look the Piston have an easy matchup. Their last 26 games to end the year all have to be playoff teams, don't they?

Also, isn't deep vein thrombosis what derailed Bosh's career? Is that also what Ausar Thompson was out for last season and the start of this one?
Yes.

My friends dad had it in his leg and was on blood thinners. If he bumped into anything had a huge bruise. If he cut himself, it took forever to stop bleeding. Not a good thing at all for a player in a physical sport.

Good game Knicks

Knicks seem to get killed every time they face a contender.
0-2 against Boston. Lost by 50 total points
0-2 against Cleveland. Lost by 43 total points
0-2 against OKC. Lost by 35 total points
2-0 against Denver. Won by a total of 47 points. 😬

ETA: The most recent game against the Knicks was the third loss in a row for the Nuggets before their most recent 9 game win streak. Jokic did play in both games though.

The Lakers defensive gameplan seems to be centered around not allowing any entry passes to Jokic. They are giving up a lot of open shots by staying back and blocking the passing lanes.

It is working somewhat--Jokic has only taken five shots entering the 4th quarter.
