2024-25 NBA Thread: for the second time, somebody in Dallas hits low percentage shot that leads to a generation of conspiracy theories (27 Viewers)

Crazy Mavs Nuggets game. Mavs manage to blow it and then pull it out without Luka.

I love PJ Washington. I feel so good about the trades for him and Gafford. Among the best moves any GM has made recently.
Both of those trades were not home runs amongst the smart basketball media, either. PJ Washington working out surprises me less than Gafford - I thought the Gafford deal was a bad move at the time. Shows what playing in Washington does to a player, I guess.
I thought they were decent moves in a vacuum, but I didn't think it was worth pushing in most of the rest of Dallas's draft capital in given how the team had been playing to that point. It's pretty wild that those two players gave the team that much juice.
The PJ move was widely panned IIRC. But there was a vocal minority that really liked him for years and thought Charlotte was just a garbage situation. That side seems to have been right.

Gafford was basically free wasn't he?
PJ a trade solid one all around. People do not really pay attention to Charlotte and he always seemed like the type of guy a contender would covet to me. Long player who can hit threes and occasionally go berserk.

Charlotte would play him at Center at times defensively because he was their best option and maybe people thought that was a knock when he couldn’t defend real bigs well?

Good trade for the Hornets too. Grant fills a role and they got a pick.

Steph Castle train is leaving the station. I love this dude. Future all-star, for sure.

Just make sure he keeps those bangs trimmed. Don't want to see another hairball.
Haha. There were two of them. The first was probably the ugliest 3 shot I've ever seen, but then he proceeded to lock down Curry and turn in a nice little 19-3-3 and a +16. And all was forgotten when he hit a 3 from well beyond the arc to put Spurs up 93-90.

The second hairball came on a mid-2, but he immediately followed up with a steal from Curry. I think his shot is just fine however. Dude just turned 20 last week, it happens.

It's fun to think of comparisons. You can see his passing ability and court vision and yes he can play PG, but ultimately I think he'll float between 1, 2, and 3 if the Spurs achieve their position less roster (and by George, I think it might happen ...tingles).

Also striking is his mental toughness and composure. You can tell he's been coached from day 1 (his dad played college ball with Tim Duncan at Wake), and he come under the tutelage of Hurly, Pop, and CP3 - and it's showing out.

One last thing to gush about is his strength. I would suggest that he's going to grow into a Kawai/Butler physique, but really he's already there.

Ah, did not expect to write so much simply to express how excited I am. Right now I'm enjoy the squinting and I see a player that looks like the combination of SGA, Kawai, and Jimmy Butler fully realized, or about 1000x the Thompson twins.

Check out these highlights. Choo choo.

I think his shot is just fine however. Dude just turned 20 last week, it happens.
This is the biggest question for him though. He shot terribly in college and is shooting terribly so far in the NBA. I don't think we nearly know enough to say "his shot is fine"

Yeah, that's what scared the Rockets off. They couldn't afford to add another player who couldn't shoot. He does look great in everything else he does. Definitely passing the eye test for me. Him and Wemby are going to be a helluva tandem.

All we can do is wait and see. Cherry picking his last 8 games he is hitting 37.5% (15 of 40), including three games with 7 attempts. I'm excited.

Only Ben Simmons could miss a layup this bad but I do give him credit for actually attempting it. Love the announcers "So close" :lmao:

Disagree on the "only Ben Simmons" part. Rudy Gobert could 100% do that.
Russell Westbrook on a bad day as well.

Y'all I dislike the Celtics as much as the next guy but if you're taking Brown over Tatum my immediate reaction is you don't know much about basketball. Let's be somewhat realistic.

Now if we're just baiting Celtics fans and being funny about stuff like who's the alpha, I'm here for it. But they're not even the same tier of player.
i was sort of throwing brown versus tatum in there and probably shouldnt have my point was more that its ludicrous to me to take tatum over labron or kd or sga i just think they are obviously superior and i stand by my argument that if you switched any of those three out for tatum the celitcs would be better and wherever tatum went would be worse take that to the bank brohans

I'm not really a Tatum fan honestly. I think he cares too much about style points and does stat pad at times when games are already decided.
i think i agree with most of what you said but this is my big thing with tatum i think some not all but also not an insignificant amount of his stats are when the games are already over which i dont like about any player take that to the bank brohans

Porzingis making his return tonight. Whoop
I had a hunch this would be happening soon. KP was listed as DNP in their recent games against WAS and MIN . . . meaning that he was available to play, and they opted not to play him. They definitely need help defensively in the paint and keeping opponents off the boards. Even if KP didn't score much, if he only fixed those issues, he'd be an upgrade.

Oddly enough, Kornet has been pretty effective. For players that have played 200+ minutes so far, he ranks 4th in TS% and 12th in WS/48. That's higher than Tatum, Curry, Lebron, Luka, etc. Not sure why they don't give him more minutes (Queta has been playing half games as of late).

He was listed as DNP - Left Posterior Tibialis Tendon. If he was available he would be listed as DNP - CD

Obviously, he could not have played when he wasn't on their active roster. Prior to the other night, he was not listed at all . . . meaning he got added to the active roster this week. I get that they listed him as not playing due to injury, but if he wasn't going to play soon, they would have left them off their game day roster. Once they put him on the game day roster, he essentially became day-to-day.

Some randomness I've noticed on defense:

Jokic plays drop coverage more than he did in the past. Odd to some, but I think he's much better staying out on pick n' rolls, but that's a lot of wear and tear on him - better saved for high leverage situations / playoffs.

New Yorkers are knowledgeable basketball fans. Are they really shocked that KAT sucks out loud on defense? They'll eventually learn to hate him because (beside shooting) he just kills teams in the areas needed most to win big in the playoffs.

James Harden gets blown by a lot. No shocker there, but the Clippers defense is so good behind him it doesn't seem to matter as much as it should. More surprising is how often Chris Paul is now a traffic cone in those situations. Wemby can certainly help backside, but the rest of the Spurs on defense makes those hurt much more in SA than LA.

The Warriors offense doesn't seem to miss a beat when they play a 5. Normally Draymond at the 5 opened it up, but they seem to be able to keep the offense efficient with a big and Draymond so far. Really helps their defense in certain matchups. I know he's easy to hate, but Draymond is still a ridiculously good defender.

The Suns (with all their players) are so much better with Coach Bud. Great hire. Since the injuries they've gone downhill and one of the culprits is Royce O'Neal. He's always been an underrated player, but his defense has really fallen off. The vet needs his minutes drastically cut.

What Dyson Daniels is doing for the Hawks defense is crazy. He's disrupting offenses like Matisse Thybulle did in the Washington zone against mediocre college players, but he's doing it against pros while playing alongside Trae Young. He seems to deflect passes every other possession.

Poor some out for Chet Homgren. He looked really, really good on defense before his hip injury. OKC is easily the best defensive team, so many double and triple efforts on possessions, it's a thing of beauty to watch sometimes.

Regarding Jokic playing drop, they generally play much more drop in the regular season than post season because it is a lot less strenuous. They have taken that to a higher level this year though and I think that is partially why his offense is up (and the Nuggets' DEFRTG is a bit down with him on the court this year, as compared to previous years). Also, with Watson and Braun as the primary POA defenders, they are both more comfortable defending from behind and big enough to body up the screener. Once the playoffs hit, they'll have him back at the level of the screen.

Regarding KAT, I think everybody that doesn't watch him often is surprised with how terrible he is defensively because he is so ******* terrible. At PF with Rudy behind him there were less instances of him being terrible that mattered but he's back at center where he is about the worst rim protecting 7 footer of all time. But he is also back to playing full time center where he is one of the best offensive centers in the NBA (with Embiid having only one leg, he's probably #2). As a center he is an absolutely devastating offensive player. I don't think the juice is worth the squeeze for him at center, but I would say he's been exactly why a reasonable fan should have expected defensively and probably a little better than that offensively.

Super cool day staying home with my kids since they are off school. Did some chores and such. Got dinner done and sit down to watch some magic basketball.

Suggs is out? This is my nightmare.

Never seen anything like this. A full court tip in attempt by Jokic. This guy is so awesome

I've been waiting for this for decades. No joke, ha! Having played a lot of volleyball, I've always wondered why hoops players haven't tried to "bump" a shot in, when the clock won't allow a catch-and-shoot. This wasn't technically a bump, but similar and the thought process the same.

In a similar vein, I am still waiting to see our first "Spike-Dunk" in the NBA. It will start with an alley-oop, and finish with a spike of the ball down into the hoop. Look out, it's comin baby (with or without a broken wrist)!

Anyway, leave it to Jokic to make my dreams come true.

For some reason I thought there was a rule about not striking the ball like that. I’m pretty old so it could have been something from the 80s. @Jayrod am I maybe thinking about a rule against punching the ball?

Ok, @Zow you can panic now. They are lost out there. Zero chemistry, zero communication, zero effort. I have no idea what is wrong with this team. Was KAT that important to this team? Seems hard to believe but watching them this year is like night and day.

No rule against it that I'm aware of, but my NBA rules knowledge is not very comprehensive.

Nothing against it for high school.

Hmm, yeah no idea. It wouldn't be a punch, though. A spike is actually done open-handed, or rather, cupped.

I feel like Julius is better as best player on a bad team. Definitely doesn't seem to fit with Ant. What were the Knicks splits last year when he was injured? Probably a better record.

Loving the Rockets defense and their attack in transition but the shots they're settling for on set plays is awful. Lucky to be in this.

edit: 11-0 Rockets run. Ignore what I just posted. They're great :towelwave:

Regular season
21-15 without him last year. 58.3 winning %
29 - 17 with him. 63%

For all you NBA Cup sickos, I updated all the group stage and wild card standings in that thread. Only two more nights of group stage action, so things are getting interesting. Only two teams so far have clinched their groups and a spot in the knockout rounds.

Based on the current standings, here are the matchups for the knockout stage.

East
#1 Milwaukee vs #4 New York (WC)
#2 Orlando vs #3 Chicago

West
#1 Houston * vs #4 Dallas (WC)
#2 Golden State * vs #3 Phoenix

* = clinched group winner

Funny thing is, they can still lose their group if the lose to Detroit. Not funny haha, but funny sort of interesting if you have nothing better to do than calculate NBA Cup scenarios.
