2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (19 Viewers)

So any retribution coming to Kirby Smart for shoving an opposing player? It was a significant push.

I still can’t believe Will Howard of all people is the starting QB of Ohio State.

OSU is paying him a million dollars and he still screwed up. Ryan Day does not deserve to be the HC of Ohio State. Day should have called a TO, Howard lost track of the time. Total debacle at the end. Just terrible.

Let's get the name of the gutless ref who saw the whole thing and just looked at Smart like, golly, Kirby Smart just pushed that player

That entire last drive was bizarre. On the first play it looked like Howard just fell down without being hit, then when all seemed lost he completes a series of improbable passes to get them inside the Ducks’ 30 — and then that bizarre sequence after the offensive PI call. The last play overshadows what came before but that was not the worst mistake in that sequence by far. They had 1st down on the Ducks 28 with a timeout and 34 seconds to go.

I think the shine is off the apple for Lincoln Riley.

Yep

Every game USC game I hear the announcers say" Riley is the premier play caller, offensive genius in college football"

Riley should thank Caleb Williams for his contracts.

Another in a long line of coaches building a mythology on a generation player.

He’s had several incredible college quarterbacks to help with the mythology. But the “who made who” question is definitely coming into focus. “Quarterback whisperer”? Or were they “Coach whisperers”?

He definitely screams future nfl offensive coordinator.

The Oregon WR in motion was uncovered in the corner, but missed. I agree with @Sparky Polastri, Buckeye defense is still lacking the one dynamic guy to make the play when needed.
I don't think it's a talent issue. They have 4 and 5 stars all over the field.

Never been a talent issues at OSU. They do have 4-5 stars everywhere, plus they spent more money this year than everyone in college football than maybe Texas to win.

That was puzzling. Run it twice, call a TO and set your kicker up for a 35-40 yard FG attempt where he likes the ball. That would give OSU a 90% chance of a win. Ryan Day seems to get lost in the moment of big games.

I've watched the ending a dozen times. Howard had a receiver near the sideline for 5 yards that he pump faked to. Receiver would have easily stepped out in time.

Unless that generational player is someone other than Caleb Williams I’m not really following. The best teams Riley has had did not have Caleb Williams on them.

Riley has had Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts and Williams. 3 of the 4 were NFL #1 overall picks, and Hurts was a star at OK.

Interesting discussion I saw earlier about the end of the tOSU/Oregon game. The play before the last where there were 10 seconds and 12 players…..

How many coaches might try to abuse the lack of rule there? If you’re not blatantly obvious, the 12 men was far more important than the 5 yards they gave. Ohio State would have preferred the 4 seconds back, but the rule doesn’t currently put time back on the clock.

You could argue intentionally doing that maybe should be more of an unsportsmanlike conduct, but that isn’t the current rule. Could be interesting if that sort of Hail Mary/end game scenario presents itself again.

It came directly after a time out. I was at the game and was screaming we had 12 guys on the field. Speculation is that Lanning did this on purpose. Crazy

Yeah in a situation where he absolutely could not take a sack, he saw a guy coming and just went straight to the ground on his own.

In the NFL I believe it's 5 yards for 12 men in the huddle, but 15 yards if 12 guys actually participate in the play. College seems to be 5 yards either way.

I was thinking the same thing as you after. If there is 10 seconds left and the ball is at midfield and you're just trying to not let them get into FG range, why not just put 20 guys on the field and take the 5 yard penalty (ball on the 45, not in FG range) while running the clock down until there's only time for one last play (hail marry instead of FG attempt).

ETA: There are actually quite a few rules holes like this. After a delay of game, if the clock was running, they wind the clock again (until the 2 minute warning, under that the rule changes). So if you're up 14 points at the start of the 4th quarter and have the ball, you could just take endless delay of game penalties (eventually they'd only be for half an inch each) and run the clock all the way down to two minutes).

There was another one with offsides and kickoffs that someone (Wisconsin I think) DID actually abuse like this and the rule changed. I can't remember what that one was now, but I believe we talked about it here years ago.

ETA2: Here it is. Wisconsin intentionally ran offsides over and over again on the kickoff to run out the clock: https://www.espn.com/college-football/news/story?id=2652043

Well of course I know that. The posts I replied to were singular so I figured they were talking about Williams specifically. Riley’s reputation was made before any of us had heard the name Caleb Williams.

To respond to your point specifically though - the fact that you had to list so many names is telling and undermines the argument. Recruiting and developing players is the most important aspect of being a college coach. Saban had the best players as well. Riley really struggles with in-game adjustments, but his bona fides as an offensive coach are beyond reproach for me. I don’t agree with the idea that his players made him. All of them improved significantly under his tutelage.

Saw a great stat today (unless you are a Kentucky fan)

Since November 1, 2021 - Vanderbilt has as many SEC wins at Kroger Field as Kentucky - both with 2.

Stoops finally going to be on the hot seat?

They were booed off at halftime. And, the loss was as much due to sloppy play and mistakes from Kentucky - 10 penalties, they botched two kicks, were fortunate that 2 turnovers were overturned on review)

Fortunately for Stoops, basketball starts soon. (Though I have seen a few comments online about Stoops showing up at Big Blue Madness for the first time, and then delivering a poor performance last night)

Well that was a fun Saturday in Eugene! Actually started Friday night at Rennie’s, and then off to a couple other bars, complete with a random @General Malaise sighting.

To bed at 1:30 AM, up at 5:45 AM to go check out GameDay for a bit. Home to load up and then off to parking lot and setting up by 10:15. We hosted at least 50 people at our tailgate, including a Duck fan known mostly for her OnlyFans stopping by.

And then the actual game itself - wow. Autzen is loud. But that was next level. All the back and forth lead changes, so intense. A typical college football game with some great plays and some bonehead mistakes, from both players and coaches. And then as time wound down, my heart was sinking, and I’m thinking “the Ducks are going to do this to us again.” We seemingly always come out on the wrong side of these. And then we didn’t. Pandemonium.

Truthfully? I absolutely love the way Will Howard plays. He's big, he has a great arm, he runs hard, he's a smart kid but he made a mistake. . . he's human. I'm not the least bit angry. He thought he had time to call a time out at the end. Is that supposed to make everyone up in arms? I'm certainly not. Am I disappointed? Absolutely - but no way can that make me upset. He was 28/35 326 yards 2 TD 0 Int and a rushing TD. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to be upset about that? Losing by 1 point to one of the best teams in the country right now, in their stadium which was extremely loud. I think his passer rating was around 94 or 95?

Hats off to Oregon and congrats to Oregon fans, great game, extremely exciting and, personally, I think a team learns more about themselves after a loss than a win sometimes. They never gave up, played their tails off and gave Oregon a heck of a fight. I think if we don't get that offensive PI call I think my Buckeyes win that game. Onto to Nebraska - GO BUCKS and congrats ducks!

Oh, my question was directed at GM who had previously been luke warm on Gabriel. I’m not attacking Howard.

Gotcha, sorry. I watched Gabriel play last week against MSU and I saw him toss two picks in the red zone but this week he looked like he was a Heisman finalist. As Project Farm would say "very impressive!"

The Athletic does a projection of the playoffs, updated every week. They currently have:

Alabama (8) v Clemson (9)--winner faces Texas
Ohio State (5) v Boise State (12)--winner faces Iowa State
Georgia (7) v Notre Dame (12)--winner faces Oregon
Penn Stae (6) v Indiana (11)--winner faces Miami
Seems like their model favorites teams that have weak schedules. Wonder if that will really happen.

The tattoo I got of him on thigh looks great!

Sorry I missed you, but we got a ride from a guy who had a parking pass so we had a few beverages there before heading in. Unfortunately, I started my day super early and was a bit of a mess by game time. I went to Web Foot at 10am for the Tigers/Guardians game and sat up at the bar with Joe from Columbus who is in the Air Force and also owns a business doing custom work on Harleys. By our 5th Boneyard, he was my new best friend!

Might have also stumbled upon some other party favors before the game, so I'm going to need to watch the replay on TV to freshen my memory. I'm still dazed over what happened. The place was so frigging loud it was just rattling my soul.

Ohio State fans were everywhere in Eugene. That fan base travels unlike any fan base I've ever seen in any sport. Incredible the volume of RED around a town that's not used to seeing this sort of turn out from visiting teams. And they were spending money, boy. Guy next to me at the Pint Pot on Friday was there with his wife and immediately began ordering pours of the best top shelf whiskeys they had - and they had some nice ones! He didn't blink when the bartender told him how much the pours were - al were over $100. Guy bought me and my son a nice shot of tequila before we left. All the folks I met that were fans of Ohio State were complimentary of Oregon and the beauty of the state. Hope they were treated right by the Oregon fans because they were kind and generous and probably just balanced the city's budget for the year.

I assume these are AP rankings or some such? Or does The Athletic do their own rankings? Either way, if the committee is doing their job, they will do a complete reset on rankings.

Bummer. ND first round pick CB Benjamin Morrison is now officially out for the year with a hip injury.

In the past few weeks we’ve lost our starting center, RT, top two rushing DEs, and now Morrison. Irish are going to hobble into the end of the season. With the opt outs, we’re down to 5 scholarship DBs left and two freshmen need to fill Morrison’s shoes now.
