He "explained" it and I still have no idea

Near as I can tell, if you are in a scrimmage formation your 5 linemen have to be numbers 50 to 79. A punt formation they don't have to. There's no "reporting eligible" like in the NFL.

Assuming that's the rule, looks like the officials got it right. But it's a stupid rule to take a gorgeous play like that away. So you basically can't do a fake punt with someone moving under center unless you use your offensive lineman? That's just dumb.

Two 70+ yard touchdowns taken off the board this series.

He was wrong. The assumption is Kiser took the snap under center. If he had, he’d have been right. Kiser was a yard back, so his read of the rule is wrong.

Right on cue, the refs rule a dropped catch a pass. They’re doing all they can to keep Virginia in the game. BD needs to send this tape to the ACC and tell them their refs are no longer welcome.

The numbering exception is simple and every level of college football talks about it and enforces it.

In order to be allowed to run a play without 5 offensive lineman (#50-79), you must be in a kick formation. Either punt with 1 guy 10 yds or more deep or FG with a kicker & holder 7 yds deep.

If you don't meet either criteria, the numbering exception isn't allowed and it is an illegal formation. I've seen it called on a fake FG. Every special teams coach should know that rule. It's been around at least 20 years.

As he underwent a change of demeanor that was pretty noticeable. Not saying he still wasn't a jerk, but it was at most normal coach levels at least where it was publicly visible.

I haven't watched many LSU games closely enough to notice. Has he reverted to his old form again?

Freeman knew the rule and disagreed the formation should have been declared a punting formation in the way they lined up, but that’s what apparently happened. He also said it lit a fire under the team so it worked out in ND’s favor anyways.

I just read up on it and apparently the issue revolved around the first statement of the rule that says "no one in position to take a hand to hand snap" what us commonly referred to as under center.

I guess the up back was within a yard of the center, but the center technically did a very short shotgun snap. The interpretation being that he was "in position" to take an under center snap.

I don't like the foul and I imagine we will get a rule interpretation this week clarifying the play.

Normally if a guy at least has a good number of wins for your team and has them in bowl games and such, you'll be favorably inclined towards a coach. I never really liked him at ND though and was glad to see him go if just for that.

I don't mind at all a HC undressing a player on the sideline for a stupid dead ball penalty or something. But this doesn't seem to be just that at all, Kelly did it a few times during the game. Now I don't watch many LSU games, half of game day Saturdays I'm at Autzen for 10 hours so only get to watch a bit of YouTube quad box at the tailgate we're half paying attention to to see what's going on elsewhere. So I don't have any idea if he does this all the time. But it sure stood out in watching that game last night.
