2024 College Football Thread: Ohio State advances to play unbeaten hypothetical SEC team (18 Viewers)

On the ND side…

* Freeman with some young coach goof decisions multiple times in the game
* Golden was flat on the biggest stage after a great year and is likely gone to the NFL
* Denbrock criminal game plan and hardly any usage for either of your stud RBs

Irish need a talent upgrade. This was 15 five star players vs 1. Need a talent injection on offense and next year a QB who threatens with his arm will be an interesting change to scheme for.

Fun team to watch and bummed to see them go out with such a whimper because of poor coaching plans. Hopefully Freeman learns and grows from this, but it was a golden opportunity missed.

ND finished with 53 yards rushing. That’s including Leonard, Love, and Price.

Denbrock is going to be lit on fire by the Irish fans for that.

That's the risk with blitzing, but they had to
Credit to the Buckeyes for knowing it was likely coming and having the balls to call a deep pass to stick the dagger in.
Easy decision with the missed FG. If we had made it and they were up 5, I’ll bet he would have run Howard instead.

Worst case was an incomplete pass and at-best ND could tie at that point.

The craziest part was Gray left 1:1 with Smith intentionally. Horrible, horrible decision by ND coaches. It had to be Moore if you’re gonna do that.

Just think Ohio State doesn't even make playoffs if they don't go to 12 teams (and neither would ND)
12 from where? 4?

8 was probably the right number. And the byes really seemed to work against many of these teams.

Drop SMU, Clemson, Arizona St, and Tenn from the bracket and it is more competitive. That drops two CG winners but they both didn't need to be there and made no impact other than giving a ****ty Texas team a game for a short time.

The year that college football expanded to a 4-team playoff, the Buckeyes did the same exact thing.
- Wouldn't have made it in under the previous format
- Made it in due to the expansion
- Won it all

Congrats to the Buckeyes. I know exactly how nice it feels to be National Champions so I also know you guys are on the top of the world right now. I was very impressed with how Ohio State bounced back after being publicly castrated in Columbus to end the regular season. A sign of true champions to overcome that loss. Well done and enjoy the parade.

Congrats Ohio State fans. In want to hate you guys but every time we hang out before, during and after our games, I like you guys.

And props to Notre Dame. You handled the Beast much better than Oregon did. Respect. Freeman is a great coach to root for.

While I am glad the Buckeyes won (our son is an OSU grad), I feel like the expanded playoff sort of devalues the regular season and conference championships. The old way, all games were playoff games for the contenders down the stretch. Now you can lose a couple times and not even make the conference title game, and it doesn’t make much of a difference. How different would things have been if the playoffs were only the 4 bye teams?

Congrats to OSU.

Hated seeing how it ended but blessed to have been there to see it.

I enjoyed the OSU fans. Obviously there is no historical animosity between put programs but our box suite was evenly split between fans and we enjoyed the game together, cheering for our teams, being playful with one another but respectful. I drove a couple of hours out and stopped at a Bucc-ee's for the first time around 1ish in the morning. I ended up having several conversations with OSU fans that were really nice (the place was full of OSU fans on their way back to Ohio). Both of us giving the others teams props and our perspective on the game and the moments that were on our minds. It was very nice and sweet.

Everyone... I mean everyone respects Freeman. I am not sure if the OSU fans like Day or not now but they sure didn't before the game.

I grabbed some confetti paper for a friend's
daughter who is in HS and wants to go to OSU for their band. Her mom said she wanted some (not sure jockingly or not) and at first I told her I was too high up in the suite. But then on my way back the suite area had an elevator that went down to the floor level club so I went and then got the confetti and was wondering backand ended up right in front of the ND locker room. I saw a couple of players come out (did not recognize their faces) and considered staying to see who I could see but decided to leave as I know they would not be in the position to want to talk to anyone and I didn't want to just looky loo. There were signs along with way with ND logo and Lockerroom (also OSU) I figured they would get trashed any way so I grabbed one of the wall as a unique souvenir.

Man... life in the box suites is not bad. Not bad at all. The food was not as good as I expected (very boogie selection but like Wagyu Beef burgers but good just not great. Free is great though. Wonderful service. If I wasn't driving I would have drank much more but I got a couple of decent drinks in before switching to water.

What a great experience even if it didn't go the way I wanted.

As expected, Al Golden is leaving ND to be named the Bengals defensive coordinator.

They really do need to do something about the NFL hiring cycle. Last time ND made the championship, it was Brian Kelly interviewing with the Eagles.

Who knows how much it played a role last night but the NFL should stay away from college teams still in-season as they have to with other NFL teams at bare minimum.

For those who care, I’d expect Freeman to name Mike Mickens (DB coach) as next DC. He’s the guy behind turning guys like Xavier Watts and Leonard Moore from a WR and a 3 star respectfully into key cogs for a national runner up.

Ohio State also did not get enough credit for weathering the injury storm in what turned into a 16 game season. Relative to what happened to other teams, they sustained no significant injuries to key cogs and that deserves a tip of cap to S&C coaching as well.

ND finished the year with 15....15 starters on both lines missing multiple games. Yeah, think about that math. Not only did we have starters go down, we had backups go down, so third stringers were playing meaningful snaps. Ohio State recruiting, depth, and working the portal was huge for them. If Henderson had missed times, Judkins was there and vice versa.

Ohio State lost their starting left tackle for the year against Oregon. His initial replacement was injured later and out for the year. Their starting All American center tore his Achilles in practice either right before the playoffs or early in the playoffs.

Ohio State’s weakness all season was their patchwork offensive line. Maybe not as much as Notre Dame but to say Ohio State did not have injury problems isn’t completely accurate.

I do think the coaches were careful about workloads of their running backs.

Yeah maybe I should say to the degree of other teams. They weathered it better than many others In the playoffs.

OL and DL might really become an interesting wrinkle in this new deeper playoff format because injuries happen in the trenches and teams making long runs are going to likely have something happen to one or both sides that needs to be filled to continue any run a team might make.

Haven't had a chance to post since the championship game but I was lucky enough to have a chance to go. Sat in a mostly ND section but that was ok, everyone was cool. I was impressed by both the ND fan base and how hard the team played. Congrats on a great season.

Happy for Ryan Day after some of the ridiculousness he has had to deal with from our fans. And Jack and all the seniors obviously.

Looking forward to the Texas showdown to start next season. You may want to see Arch unleashed, but I can't wait to see Sayin dishing it out to Smith, Tate, Ininss, and Klare.

ND is going to be a force again next year. They have a lot of starters staying and a lot of players coming back from injury. I am interested to see how they spend that $20 million they got that they don't have to share with a conference. That and the culture Freeman has built along with the success of this year should pull some transfer portal talent on top of a solid recruiting class.

What do you think about Chad Bowden leaving for USC? He seemed super successful at getting the most out of ND’s NIL dollars (a budget much less than their peers as I understand it).

Yea, bummer for him losing and even more so to USC. It will hurt, no doubt, the dude has done some great work. It may hurt long term depending on who does or does not step up with chances of it hurting being high. I don't think it will have a huge immediate impact for next year though.

Day apparently challenging some of our politicians for "least self aware ever" with his comments on NIL situation
You going to share more? Like what in particular he said, so we can agree or disagree? Did a quick google search and didn’t see anything that would put him in the category of “least self aware ever” category.
Mostly the whining about the NIL system he used to get his championship.

But then he also was talking about if OSU played last year's championship team, he thinks he'd know who would win as if he didn't have two shots at that team and lost both. Those Michigan dudes live rent free in that guy's head.

So you just don’t like RD?

Don't care one way or the other about him. Just commenting on the lack of self awareness.

Crazy arms race in college football

@Brett_McMurphy
Ohio State DC Jim Knowles was asked by school not to attend Buckeyes’ national title celebration while he deliberated his options, source said. Knowles’ representation tried to reach deal w/OSU week before title game & immediately after, but eventual offer was “well below” the competition, source said. Knowles signed a 3-year, $9.3 million deal w/Penn State Sunday

Sources: ACC in process of extending TV contract with ESPN for 9 more years

As part of a scheduling arrangement under discussion, the league’s biggest brands — Florida State, Miami and Clemson — are expected to play more football games regularly with Notre Dame. The Irish are expected to play, at the very least, two of the three each season in a rotation.

The extension paves the way for the league to potentially finalize a settlement with Clemson and Florida State that would keep them in the conference under possible alterations to the conference grant of rights and the league’s revenue distribution structure, as Yahoo Sports reported in September.

One of the main complaints in these lawsuits was the length and terms of the current ESPN television deal, so at first it seems odd that deal being extended through 2037 helps keep these two in the conference. The agreement will likely provide some form of favored $$ allocation to FSU and Clemson, or maybe more of a structure that rewards success and playoff exposure. Its also speculated that neither the SEC nor the Big Ten were prepared to expand absent higher commitments from their media partners.

Would be pretty amazing to hold the conference to something like this when allegedly they can't go anywhere, no? I remember following some posts on this in one of these threads (this one maybe?) when FSU first announced but lost track of what was going on.

FSU and Clemson both have pending lawsuits against the ACC and many people speculated they were using the lawsuits to get out of the conference and move to one of the big ones. At one point I think it appeared likely that FSU would join the Big Ten, as odd as that seems. It now appears possible that these concessions will probably form the basis for a settlement of those lawsuits under which the schools will stay in the ACC. I don't pretend to understand it all, but one of the hilarious ironies is that these schools used SMU joining the ACC as evidence that the conference was going downhill, and of course we know how that turned out this past season. For me the most important thing here is that a conference has apparently agreed to compensate its member schools differently depending on how important they are to the conference. Not necessarily shocking, but it is all part of the trend we are seeing in college sports. There's also the fact that the three big schools now have guaranteed games with Notre Dame. As many people have predicted, the new paradigm is one of haves and have-nots. The big schools will play each other and reap more rewards regardless of conference affiliation. Its somewhat akin to pro/rel in professional soccer leagues where the bigger clubs have their own league and the smaller clubs play in minor leagues, with the money being allocated accordingly.
