6 of the 14 playoff teams of 2022 didn’t make the 2023 playoffs.
I agree we are positioned for sustained success but…pride comes before a fall.
Lot of work to be accomplished over the next 9 weeks. The next couple months will bring everything more into focus.

Last year's pick from the Hockenson trade went to KC when Holmes traded back. The 55th pick used by KC for WR Rashee Rice. They also received pick 194 (DT Keondre Coburn) from the Lions.
Detroit received 3 draft choices from KC: pick 63 (Traded to Broncos), 122 (Traded to Cardinals), and 249 (Traded to Eagles.)
The Broncos trade resulted in the pick (#68) that was used to draft HH.
In all, Brad Holmes traded back 3 times In the 2023 draft, and traded up 3 times.

That sounds about right to me.
With pick 73 they're probably looking at a player like ED Austin Booker (Kansas). ED Gabriel Murphy (UCLA), DI Brandon Durlus (Oregon), or DI Braden Fiske (FSU.) Or an OG like Christian Hayes (UConn) or Christian Mahogany (BC.)

Cannot wait to see the wizard‘s work this off-season, in Holmes I trust.
I can see Brad signing a mid-tier CB, DE and maybe an OL in Free Angency. And as much as the Lions pick players over positional need, I just don't see Brad picking anything other than a CB and DE in the first and second round unless there is really a player they love drops significantly and falls into their lap.
ARSB will probably be the first to extend, with a 4-year 104 million extension with a significant signing bonus to spread it over 6 years including this year and a voidable year.

They won't force a position. They clearly have "their guys" and they are going to get them regardless of what we all think is BPA or a need. He's not taking a DE just to take one. The guy has to be someone they love.

This is so true, and so freaking refreshing after the years we suffered. No longer do I have worry about ”forcing the need” as we have seen year after year with previous regimes. Holmes will not hit them all, but it is clear he has an actual process in place and it has to be the right “fit” for what we expect here now. This goes for draft and FA‘s. No longer are we trying to grab a hot name or force a square peg in a round hole. Life is good for Lion’s fans right now.
It is easy to not draft for need when you have a pathetic rooster, because everything is a need. But now I will gaurentee you, Brad will not be drafting early a RB, TE, QB, LB, and probably not even a safety. The bucket of players they fall in love with will be more focused this year than previous drafts. The Lions are truly a couple very specific positions away from being legit contenders to win it all.

But I trust he will not over-reach for those needs either, which is the refreshing difference from the past. We will not go out day one of FA agency and pay the top corner just to pay the top corner. We will also not draft that position unless we are sold on the prospect at that particular pick. Refreshing…

I think the bottom line for most fans is we trust Brad Holmes. He has nailed 3 consecutive drafts and has been a judicious spender in FA. He has done nothing in his first three years that would give you any reason to doubt the moves he makes (and/or the ones he doesn't make.)

Andrew Erickson of fantasy pros put together a FA/draft "needs" breakdown of all 32 teams. Here is the Lions writeup:
The Lions’ Achilles heel on defense showed up at the worst time in 2023, with their secondary getting shredded by opposing offenses. Kindle Vildor, Emmanuel Moseley and Will Harris are all free agents.
Cornerback is a MUST in this spot as they look to align their strong run defense in the backend. Hence, the Lions are listed with +175 odds to draft a CB first per DraftKings Sportsbook, followed by OL (+200), and then DL (+225).
And there’s no better way to accompany a struggling secondary than with a strong pass rusher opposite the up-and-coming superstar, Aidan Hutchinson.
On offense, the Lions look like sure-fire bets to add a WR. Josh Reynolds and Donovan Peoples-Jones are hitting free agency.
The Lions can’t risk going ALL-IN on Jameson Williams in Year 3. Williams has had a tumultuous two years in the NFL. His rookie year was lost because of a torn ACL, and 2023 started slow because of a suspension. When he’s been on the field, he’s teased big-play upside with a lot of inconsistencies and injuries. Entering Year 3, the former first-rounder will likely be viewed as a logical breakout candidate. After all, the WR2 job should be all his with Reynolds gone in free agency. But Jamo’s hardly without his warts, with just a 10% target share earned, 15% target rate per route run, and 6.4 fantasy points per game scored in 2023 (WR66, same as Reynolds).
Williams might be overrated heading into 2024 because of his draft capital. But everything he showed in his second season suggests he still has a long way to go, especially as the “at best” third or fourth receiving option on the Lions.
A WR name that I think could make a lot of sense for the Lions in free agency is Curtis Samuel. A trip to Motown would reunite him with Jim Hostler, a former Panthers WR coach and senior offensive assistant for the Commanders. Hostler is now a senior offensive assistant for the Lions as of 2024.
Detroit also may need to overhaul the interior OL, as they could lose two starters. Halapoulivaati Vaitai is a FA alongside the bigger name, Jonah Jackson. Dan Skipper is another IOL depth piece they could lose in FA.
Both of their starting tackles are also due for new contracts at the end of 2024, as is Amon-Ra St. Brown. Also, some of their DTs are in the final year of their contracts in 2024.
Given their positive salary cap status, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Lions keep all of their core guys intact while potentially making one or two splash FA signing in hopes of getting back to the NFC Championship Game. Detroit has gone from being a team that had to overpay for free agents to a franchise that FAs will WANT to play for. With Ben Johnson back as the OC, the Lions have a strong shot as any team to get back to the NFC Championship Game with a few key additions this offseason. In Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell, we trust.

The website I am looking at says Tyreek, Adams and Cupp are higher but they also may not really see all that- sometimes numbers are misleading. Either way, it’s fine if Amon Ra is highest paid because Jefferson, Chase, Waddle, etc are right behind him for new deals and will likely pass him up because that’s just how it works.

Going to be some casualties down the road. Decker has 1 year left and wants a new deal but he might not get one. With all the contracts coming up we know why they dumped Hock last year. Get 4-5 years out of LaPorta at pennies on the dollar compared to Hock.

Depends how you measure. Contract numbers can include non-guarenteed money. Sometimes they look at cap-hit numbers. Signing bonus , voidable years, bonus incentives...until details are ironed out, it will be hard to say where his contract falls.
And? He's a top 5 WR and deserves to be paid for it. It's a pass happy league now.
Also, things change fast. Look at how quickly the QB contracts escalated. WR's will be next. Especially with the cap increase for 2024.

Also, not sure there’s a more compelling case for “he has earned his bag.” Not only phenomenal production, but he’s the embodiment of the Holmes/MCDC vision. Hardest worker on the team, great leader by example, comes up big in brightest moments, incredible brand ambassador for the franchise and the shield.
If he didn’t get top dollar every player on the team would wonder “what’s it take?”
Would be a horrible look for the Lions to not pay up for Amon Ra
