2025 Carolina Panthers: Looking Forward to Continued Mediocrity, Kee... START Pounding! (3 Viewers)

Are the Panthers trying to tank the rest of the season or be better?

I am not sure, if the owner wanted to tank he should have left the coach to finish the season, that would have almost guaranteed a bad season.
Now with the trades and firing of the coach the players will probably be more focused as they got a slap in the face.
New coach will bring some energy, as we saw yesterday

Outside of QB, it's not a horrible team. Hard to tank when your defense and oline are decent.

No one told the players and coaches they were tanking the season. There are parts that need to be in place for them to be a real contender, for sure, but there are lots of good players on the roster. Find the right coach and the franchise QB and this team can quickly be a contender... especially in this division, which is weak all of the sudden. Brady is about to retire and none of the other teams have that great QB so it's wide open for the next few years, imo.
 
What a game. Hard to blame DJ for making a fantastic play but you need to be aware of the score in the moment. Still, the kicker missed 2 game winning FGs. So the extra point was a 49 yarder, so what?. The other was a chip shot. You are paid to make kicks and you missed them both.

Loved the running game, just a tough way to lose.

PJ, that throw was crazy... almost 70 yards in the air. Still don't know if he's the franchise QB and it can be frustrating watching him because he does enough to make you think he may be the guy. I just don't believe he is the long term solution.

Wilks is doing a great job and has them playing hard. I'm curious to see how they come back from this type of loss against a Bengals team that is getting better each week.

Yea that was heart breaking going from 1st in the division to almost "pointless" over just bonehead plays and awful kicking. The only way they come back from this is winning several in a row, which I find difficult to see happening even though Wilkes has them playing hard. A positive note is they need to re-sign D'Onta Foreman aka "Baby Henry". He is a steal, and was unstoppable

This was after win against Tampa Bay. It shows you that the players really want to win for Wilkes which says something atleast

So the Rams offered two first round picks and Cam Ackers for Brian Burns. Mixed emotions on that offer. The 1st round picks would be from 2024 and 2025 so no help in next year's draft, but it's never a bad thing to have future 1st rd picks. Ackers is young and talented. Burns is also young and has a lot of sacks ahead of him.

His contract is nice but they'll need to talk extension soon and it isn't going to be cheap. Since they declined the offer, they will have to sign him. If they let Burns walk in free agency, they should be run out of town for not taking this deal.

I love Burns but with uncertainty at HC and QB, I wouldn't have been too bent if they had accepted the Rams deal. Am I nuts to feel that way?
 
Well I guess it's back to Baker. Nice half he had but garbage time stats are a thing. Wilks fires a couple of coaches.

Bryce Young looks like he's worth resetting for, but looks like we aren't the only team that's in the market.
 
Darnold was just activated. I doubt they’d go back to him right away, but maybe if/when Baker falters yet again.
 
Odd game with both QBs producing a lot of mediocre. The Falcons had 4 dropped interceptions and the Panthers had 4 or 5 drops that should have been INTs.

Foreman with another good showing but how sustainable is a running game when the QB can't mix in some down field throws? ATL looked like they didn't want to win this game. Mariota throwing it up for grabs all night. Odd

Game felt like Carolina should have been up 30+ to 9, but ATL had a chance to win in their last possession.

I'd like to keep Wilks as DC but I'm doubtful about him as HC.
 
Ended up going to the game last night. It was fun, but probably brutal to watch on TV. Numerous dropped picks and a lot of running. Feels like Luvu is everywhere on the field.
 
Nice win with Darnold back at the helm... for a time. A win is always good but at this point it seems we're just losing draft position.
 
News of the meh. Baker Mayfield released by the Panthers... meh

Not sure what the Panthers ever thought they'd have in Mayfield, short or long term.

Gotta love the way they're running the ball lately. Oline has been good and the defense is playing well. Darnold, so far, has avoided disaster. What's not to like?
 
Wilks is doing fine work with this team and everything right to win the job. Is he the right HC for the Panthers? Not sure but he's making a strong case. Even if they miss the playoffs, the offseason will be interesting.

Team and Wilks get a lot of credit for how hard they fought. Missing Horn was huge today, he does not get enough credit for becoming a true elite CB. Ickey with egg on his face for the bad whiff leading to the key sack/fumble.
 
So Tepper talked to Harbaugh... not an interview (sure thing). I love the job Wilks is doing and how the team has played for him. And even though he may deserve the job, I'm not sure about him long term. His only shot at sustained success, imo, is a perfect OC hire.

I'd still like to see an offensive minded HC for a change. Someone who can develop a young QB and build around that. Again, Wilks is great and I wish he was running the defense. Or hire him full time HC and see how it goes for another 3 years. I just fear it will be much of the same (maybe 7-9 with an occasional 11-6).

That said, I'd rather have Wilks as HC as opposed to a blind stab at a college offensive coach with no NFL experience.

You mean not to repeat the Rhule process? I had high expectations of OC Joe Brady but he was the scape goat for not using CMC more early ...
Not sure most "Re-tread NFL HC" will deliver much .... Sean Payton on the other hand....

Yeah Payton would be very interesting but I don't think he'd be onboard for the job in Charlotte.

He knows the Division .... but I doubt it has the "stage" he would be interested in conducting ....

Draft season upon us. Coaching decision looming, does Tepper hire Wilks as HC? Do they trade up from #9 to draft a QB? Is there a QB worth trading up for... Stroud, Young... stay back and draft Levis?

1. Wilks is HC. I know Tepper is going to interview lots of other candidates, including Frank Reich. Would Reich consider being the OC with Wilks? Not likely but would be interesting. What about Nathaniel Hackett as OC?

2. Payton isn't interested in the job but what about Sean McVay? There's a guy that may be looking for a change of scenery and may be one that can be talked into a fresh start on the east coast.

3. Bears seemingly won't draft a QB at 1 and may be better off trading the pick down. Houston will draft Young or Stroud at 2. Cardinals at 3 may be a trade partner consideration. Colts at 4 will definitely draft a QB. If Panthers want one of the QBs, they'll probably need to jump ahead of the Colts. What are they prepared to offer the Bears or Cards?

4. Bears draft a QB and trade Fields for picks. Would the Panthers make a trade for Fields? I don't know... seems the Bears would want too much, and the Panthers had their chance in Fields' draft year. Hopefully this isn't a consideration.

5. If given the choice, would you rather have Young or Stroud? Darnold? Or someone else?

6. If given the choice, would you rather have Wilks, McVay, Harbaugh, Reich, or someone else?

Should get interesting.

I get the upside case, but I think Wilks did enough to earn the job. Panthers get some credit for not getting some coordinator, college coach, or ransom to Sean Payton.
 
I watched Rhule on Bussin and listened to Sirrius right after. I might have mixed em up but I think they both predicted this. One or both predicted this.
NFL coaching hires are often times more four year plans than an individual as we'd like it to be or expect.
Reich is (or was, maybe debatable) a guy that can attract a name QB if he's the coach. I don't know the rest of his plan but that's been the Panthers prob so ya gotta figure they were receptive.
Wilks did a heckuva job making something out of nothing. No one discounts that. The offense was better but still bad. A ton of low risk plays n handoffs to the backs definitely settled things down and was the right move. Is that exciting? Is that promising for the future?

Can we really blame the Panthers owner for wanting change? What does more of the same mean in Carolina? They've done a heckuva job building a team with no money due to wasting it on QBs, so what if they have a new guy that can attract a guy like Carr and spend their money typically? Was it gonna continue and be Darnold PJ and Wentz next year? Foles?

The shame is that we all have pride. Wilks should stay and have a role and be appreciated but now he's bitter and....it stinks.

It was time for change and time for thanks to Wilks, both
 
I don't get this Wilks did a great job narrative. He was 6-6. That's the definition of average. In the most important game of the year his team was up 21-10 in the 4th quarter and lost 30-24. Epic collapse. Thanks for an average job coach.
 
Can't believe any of you think Reich was a good hire. He vastly underperformed in Indy. Wilks got the shaft here.
