2025 Cleveland Browns - JOK Out for the Season (3 Viewers)

oh, and it doesn't help that Berry put Stefanski behind the 8 ball with no backup QB on the roster.
Absolutely. As I said, this organization has been inept. One poor decision after another for way too long.
the weird part is, Berry traditionally has spent on the backup QB position.

2020 Case Keenum 6 million
2021 Case Keenum 6 million
2022 Jacoby Brissett 4.5 million
2023 Dorian Thompson-Robinson 1 million
2023 PJ Walker 1 million

i get Watson is eating up a chunk of the cap, but one of these is not like the others.
And Dobbs is only making 1.5 M
to be fair, there was no way to know Watson was going to miss 4-6 weeks.

but if you look at how many QBs have started for the Browns, it does feel inevitable that they will need the backup to play at some point.

We didn't lose the Seattle game due to ONE CALL by Stefanski which was a good call as THREE receivers were open. Njoku was wide open but was the second read so I won't fault Walker for not even looking in his direction, but Ford was also WIDE OPEN at the sticks in Walker's line of sight for a 'gimme' first down. Walker never took his eyes off his first read and the safety made a great play... result? STEFANSK MADE THE WRONG CALL and we lost the game on that ONE PLAY that Stefanski made the call on. BS, BS, BS.
The defense lost the game by digging a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter that the offense had to crawl out of.
Then they lost it AGAIN by allowing a touchdown after the interception. They became soft butter to the HOT KNIFE of the oh-so-powerful Seattle offense (read with dripping sarcasm).
Stefanski is getting the most out of Walker that he possibly can, but PJ HAS to make a simple dump-off throw in pressure situations for 'easy' first downs instead of crapping the bed by locking on his first read and not playing the percentages. Stefanski made the RIGHT CALL as everyone was open. Even a PJ Walker HAS to make a simple/easy read and throw to ice the game. The play was on PJ because it came down to execution. It wasn't a CUTE call, it was the RIGHT call.
The defense blew the game. The offense crawled out of the hole the defense put them in and then gave them a 3 point lead where all they had to do was make one stop but they FAILED.

I would think this D is licking it's chops at the prospect of facing a rookie in their first start.
one would sure hope after a disappointing loss like that they should be fired up for a home game.

but as we’ve seen especially this season, you never know what’ll happen on Sunday.

hey Bracie, just curious where you are hearing all the "fire Stefanski" talk?

is it the callers? cause i've been hearing that the last few years, doesn't seem like it's changed much recently.

or is it the hosts? websites?

DPJ gone for a 2025 6th round pick.

thoughts?

i know some of us were higher on him than others, but this came as a bit of a surprise.

I don't have a problem with it. We weren't utilizing him much anyway. We could use more draft slots. I am hoping this opens up a few more opportunities for Tillman. I am disappointed we haven't seen more of him.

Cleveland sports talk radio has a few hosts who overly criticize every move Stefanski makes, you can set a clock to how they'll spin any loss into one call by Stefanski and that is the MO of a few loudmouth fans who tend to get the most air attention.
DPJ was on the field more often than Amari Cooper, 83% of the time. Ced Tillman was at 10% and David Bell wasn't much higher. DPJ was on his last year of his rookie deal and wasn't breaking out and quite frankly wasn't cutting it as a punt returner IMHO.
We get 'something' in return for him but primarily it opens up opportunities for the young WRs and anyone else as a punt returner. DPJJ cost us bigtime in the Pittsburgh game and in a few others where he let the ball bounce inside the 10-yard line.
My issue with the defense is teams have figured out that Schwartz will not sit back as most other DCs do in order to 'feel out' what the offense is doing, he ATTACKS! The last two games offenses have seen the weakness in that aggressive style and have burned us for long scores till Schwartz is forced to adjust but late in the game the opposing offense 'somehow' makes an adjustment to Jim's adjustment and walks down the field for a late score.
I see an issue. It seems clear that we need to dial-it-back early in games, so we don't give up those easy scores that put us in a hole. Save a few wrinkles for later when the game is on the line and THEN unleash hell to catch the opposing offense off-guard.
Or just blame Stefanski because one offensive call late didn't go our way and ignore all of the other great calls and offensive schemes that got us ANY scores with PJ Walker as our QB.

if there's certain guys that just go straight to "fire Stefanski" i would suggest trying to avoid them altogether.

personally, i only listen to 92.3, because while they will critique the coach, they don't just yell "Fire Stefanski" every time the Browns lose.

there's certain guys (like Grossi) that i will go out of my way to avoid listening or reading anything they write, because they're just trying to get clicks.

who do you think they are going to put in as punt returner now?

also i wonder if it was just trying to clear the way for other guys, why couldn't they just drop DPJ down the pecking order?

they could have a few injuries. and suddenly be thin at WR. i personally would've kept him, unless he was creating a problem in the locker room.

What is Detroit getting in DPJ?
good question.

there's probably other people in this thread that can give you a better answer, but here's my two cents.

seems to me like he's one of those guys who is decent at everything, but not exceptional in any one area.

it also seemed like he was going to take a next step, but apparently he never did.

i guess there was a reason he was a 6th round pick.

maybe a change of scenery helps him, it has happened for other players in the past.

What is Detroit getting in DPJ?
Adept contested ball target, especially along the boundary
Not a lid lifter, but down field ability keeps the defense honest
At his best in a complimentary role (~5 targets/gm)
Willing blocker, very effective as big slot
Some YAC ability, but needs space and due to separation issues usually doesn't have it
Susceptible to the jam, especially against press, but while he looks like an ordinary route runner he has just slippery enough footwork at his breaks to get open (enough), but windows have a tendency to close quickly if timing is off
I think he suffered from the QB carousel (possibly due to that last part) and force feeding Elijah Moore
These guys better be right about Tillman

there you are!

where have you been?

Started a new job. Coaching more youth sports teams. Kids have gotten old enough to open up a sliver of a social life. I've caught most games to this point, although coaching interfered with a couple, but haven't watched much else. Maybe that'll change now that temps are getting colder and days shorter...

I hope so. I thought he was a great selection on draft day. He had the big junior year at Tennessee and then was hampered by injury his senior year. Seemed like potential #1 value for a 3rd round selection. I have been disappointed that we haven't seen more of him thus far. I assume he steps right into DPJ's role. I don't see Goodwin or Bell being able to fill those shoes. I was just watching some of his college highlights. He can really to adjust to the ball well and is capable of winning a contested catch. Of course, we only see the best of him in highlights. He put up a 17-352-2 stat line against the likes of Alabama and Georgia in 2021, college football's best. Let's hope it translates to the pro game.

Hmmm. Thanks @MAC_32 appreciate the insight. Also, good to see you around.

Only 4.48 - which is plenty fast, just not scary fast - but I did note his deep intermediate and deep passing grades at PFF in prior years was phenomenally good. Which surprised me bc it likely wasn't due to stellar QB play.

Don't think there are many targets available in Detroit rn....and with Goff, targets are def earned, it will take him a few weeks to get comfortable. But I could see DPJ fulfilling the big body, take some shots occasionally role that DJ Chark had last year. The Jamo experiment development probably extends past the bye but it's not going ad infinitum; we're up to 10 g, 199 snaps, 23 targets, 7 catches and 7 drops. He currently ranks 110th out of 110 WRs with 15 or more targets. Pecking order is ARSB + LaPorta + Gibbs and then scraps for Jamor, DPJ, Raymond, and Josh Reynolds. The latter two have been uber efficient.

Any insight on David Njoku or do we just have to wait and check the report Thu/Fri? Ankle is a new one, previously it was knee (oh and blowing his face off.) Need him to fill in for LaPorta this week.

No insight other than what you have probably already read. Going to have to wait and see how much practice he gets in the next couple days. The guy did play after burning his face off though, so he can play through some pain.

Bigg'er' body who is more than a willing blocker in the run game. I think he's an exceptional blocker for a WR in the run game.
Makes contested catches, doesn't get much separation but if the QB works out the timing he'll make those contested catches, but he'll just plane-ole-drop a few easy ones.
I like him and I think most Browns fans like him, but he was on the last year of his rookie deal and we have two younguns' waiting in the wings who need PT.
Everyone knows the issue with the Browns passing game and it isn't the WRs so I think you guys got a 'decent' WR at a bargain price.
Add, he has good hands as a punt returner and broke the only PR score in the league last year so he 'can' bust one but as noted he 'tends' to let more than a few punts bounce inside the ten-yard line instead of signaling a fair-catch. I'm not sure if it's a depth perception issue or nerves or what but he 'tends' to make bad decisions on punt returns inside the ten-yard line.
I don't have a clue who the Browns will put back as the new PR but hope they have good hands and make better decisions inside the ten-yard line.

The guy did play after burning his face off though, so he can play through some pain.

Guy in my league dropped him after that happened. When I saw the pictures & read an interview with him about the incident I thought “OK that guy has to on my team.”

I imagine any Browns player with a minor ding sees David walk in with his Halloween mask & fur coat, ready to put on the pads, man they’re hopping out of the whirlpool. I’m fine, I can play.

Unless they have a 200+ million dollar fully guaranteed contract

Browns -10 at home.

anyone know the last time they were double digit favorites?
Texans in 2021. There weren't any issues with our quarterback and their shoulder then. Nor was there when we played the Cardinals a few weeks later.

:oldunsure:

just heard on radio, Wills to short term IR, should be back this season.
I know we've all kinda **** on Jed but he is what he is and I did not want to see him go out this way. Ravens gotta be chomping at the bit now. Stefanski is going to be tested this week putting together the offensive plan. I think he's done a better job this year game planning and with in-game adjustments than any other year he's been here. We'll see what he's got this week.

Bill Callahan is like a secret weapon. i was so happy when they signed him.

Bill will have someone ready to play LT with a week to prepare.

i'm not saying it will be perfect, but i would be shocked if that position is a big liability in the Ravens game.

Yea absolutely, he is the guy who, when he walks into the room for the annual review, you just slide the blank check over and ask him to keep it reasonable.

Not feeling good about their chances
me neither. The Ravens are just firing on all cylinders right now. a loss in Baltimore is not a guarantee, but it does seem more likely than not.

but the Browns better not get blown out, either.

they HAVE to win the Steelers game though.

OK, when I said this, I was expecting Jones to play. He’s been ruled out.

Yea this is getting really dicey right now. We're going to get Watson back as healthy as he's been in months only to lose his protection up front. The mad genius better come up with a slick game plan against this defense.

Well, we already had a liability at LT, so this shouldn't be much different. Jones though...
