The crazy thing to me is, college football has never been more diverse or un-dynastic.... yet this thread is a 3rd (1/3) as dynamic as it used to be.

We have Indiana, INDIANA, as a legitimate playoff team/national title contender, almost all of the most recent title contwnders struggling in some form, Georgia tech back in the mix, Clemson gone, Texas gone, penn st gone, LSU getting manhandled, oregon is oregon, and yet....

1 comment an hour.

This may be the 1st time in 30 years that we end up with what we wanted... a discussion about a real championship. Yet now we have a playoff for it and whoever wins it all will have a loss or 2, or hell, maybe even 3.

And the thread is silent.

Can we go back to the old Bowl system?

I have been hearing about this all season. The portal and NIL seemed to have ruined much of what fans loved about college football. Get players in as freshman and watch them and the team develop. Watching games now it like "Jones started out at Tulsa, then moved on to OK State for 2 years, now the starting RB at Mississippi. Indiana is having great success swapping out 25-30 players every year and going with 3-4-5th year veterans.

Recruiting does not mean much anymore as teams like Ohio State will just buy whatever position is of need. But that is the new college football, and it is not going to change. It will slowly kill the rivalries as well.

Smith just looks like he does not want to be at MSU on the sidelines and just waiting for the ax to fall. The guy looks like Pinocchio from the side. Does not seem like a good fit.

The 26 team conferences are probably the worst change over the last 10-20 years. Conferences should be full round-robin and limited to 8-10 teams.

I'll be honest, I didn't watch more than a minute of college football this weekend as I was on a little vacation to the Dallas area with my 21 year old son. I did get to watch Southlake Carrol HS football on Friday night and boy, if you've never been to a high school stadium in Texas or if you're like me and you haven't been to one in decades, things are very very different down there. Holy moly was that stadium nice. Huge too, for HS. Also went to a Cowboys' game, speaking of massive marvels of architecture. I don't think I saw the field once, but we were in the stadium with 100,000 other fans. Quite the experience. It was like one big party.

So, with that in mind, the Top 20 is going to be largely copy/paste and guess work but we'll do it regardless.....

Yes there are several nice high school stadiums in Texas. Large concentration of pro athletes live in Southlake Carrol district. High expectations for their football team each year and they usually deliver. There is usually a large supporting cast for high school games also (cheer leaders, dance team, band, color guard, choir). But there is also expectations to start specializing in one thing in early middle school, so lots of select leagues, camps, clinics year tound. Bu it does jeep the kids busy.

Hard to support a conference champion when they don't play everyone in the conference. But remember this is entertainment and tv revenue focused.

Among big name programs (i.e. programs that are usually considered to be contenders for the playoffs in most years), I think only Clemson has had less transfers come in from 2021-2025. The VAST majority of their national championship roster was long-term Buckeyes, as is the vast majority of this years team.

And while the small number of transfers they have taken have hit at a high rate and been key contributors, their most important acquisitions (Downs, Sayin) are guys that OSU was the clear #2 in their recruitment (and would have been #1 if not for Saban, which is why they transferred). So it isn't accurate at all to say recruiting doesn't mean much.

Recruiting is no different than transfer portal anyway. Everyone is a free agent every year. Some of them have been on teams before and some haven't. Its the same thing.

3 really good programs who can challenge for a NC if they make the right hire. Florida has to compete with Miami and FSU in state and UGA/Bama on their border. Florida has the most talent but Louisiana has a ton and LSU has less competition in state with a ton of talent. PSU seems to have an “easier” job with in state but I don’t know the talent level compared with other two. I’m not sure there’s an obvious answer - I think a competent coach could win at any of the 3.

For what it’s worth both SEC teams have won 3 national championships since Penn State won one.

I know the boosters exist at these schools and some have names but it is shocking they can't come up with something else to spend money on like just have super model hot girls on a yacht forever type things. If they all decided football is stupid what is the real market value of coaches?

I’m not and actively root against them but seems like most people have moved on. I just think the job is a little overrated although I do think the right coach can win (possibly the NC). Franklin came pretty darn close even with his limitations.
