The draft is becoming more clear with the free agent signings...
CB/S: Check, Signed Sutton and Moseley, re-signed Harris - but I think they'll still add more in draft
DT/ED: Re-signed Buggs & the Commish, still need a talent infusion
LB: Re-signed Anzalone but need more speed
RB: Signed Monty and re-signed Craig Reynolds
Guard: Big V not getting cut? Still need depth and def could stand an upgrade + future proof if they don't want to pony up for Jonah Jackson extension
WR: Need Chark's replacement
QB: Need backup
TE: May need talent infusion but not necessary
Based on the free agent signings so far, I see Brad going DT, CB, or QB in the first round. Don't think Brad values LB high enough to take one in the first or second round. Drafting the best OL at 6 would be weird but can't rule it out. Thoughts?

We like to pay our TEs in peanuts. Extra crackers (crumbs) if they can block. Also need to be able to outbench the HC before you can make the 53 man.

I wonder if we plan to move Okudah there? Are they feeling like Melifonwu will improve? There’s also still a ton of experiences safeties out there on FA who can probably be equivalent to Elliott.

A position of need in Miami, with Brandon Jones coming off an ACL in week 7. He'll be competing with Jones and undrafted rookie from 2022 Vernon McKinley who plays smart and showed promise late in the year. State income tax of 4.25% helps a little, but the COL must be cheaper in DET, unless he has a home elsewhere.

In his presser today Anzalone mentioned he trained with Cam Sutton in the offseason. John Cominsky said what sealed the deal on being a Lion again and being all in was getting a short text from Dan Campbell thanking him for the job he did in 2022. I'm told there was a deleted SnapChat from Elliott (said he got hacked lol) complaining about Michigan having snow in March.
For these mid level the little things are a big deal. Everyone who re-signed - Anzalone, Buggs, the Commish - they all talked about how it's just different n Allen Park. They don't run it like a business. They know the names of your kids. Coaches are on the same level as players. Respect and accountability are a big deal. It's a tight knit family. Guys that don't get it, that's cool, plenty of places where they don't do things like us.
Liking that Holmes is making pretty low risk moves in FA. Anxious to see what he will do in the draft. He crushed it the first two years and made surprising (in a good way) selections.

I wonder what the Lions offered. I think I would have put out less than that. Montgomery is only 3 million more guaranteed but he’s 2 years younger and a better player. The only thing Jamaal has is the locker room/fan presence but it’s the NFL- You can’t keep everybody. By all reports Montgomery was beloved by Chicago fans and teammates. I think he will be a favorite and leader in Detroit quickly.

Hard runner. Puts up 1K YFS every year on crappy offenses. Breaks a ton of tackles bc their line is dreck. Although Jamaal graded out better in pass pro the last two years, Monty led the league in RB run blocker a few years back.
He's very capable and a far better weapon in the passing game. We really telegraphed what was happening with the Swift/JW duo. Jamaal rarely caught passes and while he'd have more snaps, D'Andre's utilization (touches/snaps) was super high. Maybe they'll be a little more diverse and able to disguise what they are doing better with this combo.

I have a new working theory both Okudah and Swift could be involved in draft day trades. I could see us adding to the 8 picks in the first round by trading back with teams with 10+ picks. Then package one of those two (whom we really don't want, but still have value) with mid-round picks to end up with 7-8 picks inside the top 75. Target the teams with 6 or less picks, give them multiple picks.
ASIDE - I'm an expert on the PFF Draft Simulator if you're reading this and need a draft consultant, Brad.
I think it's also a good chance for Elliot to start in a Fangio defense. Brandon Jones might not be ready come game 1, so competition might just be Vernon McKinley who was undrafted last year. Jones and Elliot both played at Texas, overlapping a couple of years.

very different players. Jones is a blitzing S who is good in run support, but not great playing deep. Fangio will have them in a 2 high shell. Detroit runs a lot of single high with Elliott playing more of a box S role, in zone coverages he was mostly there to disrupt throwing lanes - I'm not sure he's a great fit for Miami. Jones is a better athlete but they just have different skill sets.
Elliott is a good communicator and helped our young defense know where they needed to be. When he wasn't in there our run defense was noticeably weaker. Coverage wise he's got some ball skills but just one of those guys who was running people down from behind or arriving just after the ball to join the pile. Good player with limitations, you just have to deploy him the right way.

Just read that Holmes had offered Jamaal Williams a nice contract but wanted an answer and get it done before the leagues new year started.
So they knew what they were looking for in FAs.

Sweet! Thought that might happen, it's been rumored. Solid player and always was a hustle guy (walked on at U of M.) IIRC he started whole seasons at G and then C first time he was here.
I remember being annoyed Bob Quinn let him walk - graded out in the low 70s his last three years here. MFers replaced him with Big V, who hasn't played as well and missed exactly half of his starts the last 3 years.

It's been 25 hours and 15 minutes since all teams had to be under the cap. They have enough room for the rookie class.
I think they're going to let Halapoulivaati Vaitai have one last shot. Crazy bc virtually 100% of "offseason cap moves for the Lions" articles started with cutting Big V.
Graham had his first bad year in 2022. Def not a given he's the starter. Right now I'd say he has the Evan Brown can-start-anywhere-inside-if-needed role.

No surprise they're friends.
Having played Lions the past four years, Montgomery said it's night-and-day between first two and last two. Said he used to circle the game as a chance to have fun, but felt like Lions probably had Bears circled last two years.
Low key dude, he's the bizarro version of Jamaal. Asked about his role, he said "Whatever Coach Campbell and Coach Ben tell me it has to be. You want me to pass block every down, that's my job. You need a gunner on the punt team, I'll do it. If Jared needs a water, I'll go get him water. I would be doing the game a disservice if I didn't give it my everything no matter what I'm doing."
Humble dude. Talked up Swift, said he's a insanely good. Loves the atmosphere and the energy, said you could feel it across the LOS and across the field. Said he's excited to have the chance to be a part of building something special.

Emmanuel Moseley presser was pretty interesting. He was a dual threat high school QB. After he graduated, Hendon Hooker took over as QB at the same high school. Also, the Lions signed DB Mac McCain a few weeks back - that dude also went to the same high school lol. And the first day he went to U-T, Cam Sutton was his host when he was a freshman (they started opposite one another for two years.)
Cited playing with Richard Sherman for 3 years as big part of his development. He was a UDFA and Sherm (5th round pick back in the day) was his mentor. First time he got a start, Richard sat him down and said, "hey it's just football. don't make it too big, but don't treat it like it's nothing. you're here because you belong, you earned it."
Biggest reason he came to Detroit? Dan Campbell. Loved playing for Demeco Ryans, knew Detroit had a ton of ex-coaches and everyone knows they have something good on the rise over in the D. Easy decision.
5 months into his rehab, everything going well so far, not sure where he'll be at when camp opens but working out a schedule with the Detroit training staff was one of the things they were working on today. Should be ready for the opener (11 months since injury) but little early to say for sure.

They asked him what's his why, what is the biggest motivation for him, and he talked about his baby girls (2 toddlers.)

Strength of this draft class is CB and Edge. DI is thin, S is kind of lame but couple good ones Day 2. Meh at OLB but who cares.
QB is top heavy. Decent TE group. T is good but no generational guys. Weak at G (but lots of C and T who could shift.) WR is not that great but couple gems here and there. RB there's maybe 2-3 and then it becomes real one dimensional / limited traits.
There's value everywhere but it's a minefield. Overall I think there are some dudes in this class but it's more like solid starters who might become Pro Bowlers, and honestly only maybe two can't miss Blue Chips Iand one of them is imploding.)

To think after all this we are still loaded with one of the biggest amounts of draft capitol in the league, is some serious gravey to get the depth for a team that will be contenders for the years to come.

2023 - $1.2Mm p5 base fully guaranteed
2024 - $6.0Mn p5 base salary only 50% guaranteed ($3Mn)
$100K workout bonuses x3 - likely to be earned so it counts against the Cap
If he does not play well it's a 2-yr, $12.2Mn deal.
($4.8Mn signing bonus + $7.2Mn salary + $100K [x2] workout)
the out next year is a bit prohibitive ($6.6Mn with only $700K in Cap savings) but 2025 it drops to $2.4Mn with a Cap savings of $4.9Mn

Probably just level of comfort getting the green dot back. Personally I’d hand that helmet to Rodrigo & get a late round tweener like Doran Williams (Tulane) or Ventrell Miller (Florida.) To my eyes AA is replacement level & not worth any premium.
