2025 Philadelphia Eagles - LB in the first round??? (28 Viewers)

Promoting from within didn’t work after 2022, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do for OC.

They must lock up Baun, he makes that defense what it is. I expect Sweat and Williams to walk because we have reinforcements on the DL. Not sure what they will do with Becton. Will probably come down to whether another team makes him an offer he can’t refuse.

I think most likely to least likely, to be back:

Baun - 80% chance, defensive leader and Dean won't be ready for the start of next season so I think they pay him well, but maybe he gives them a bit below market discount.

Williams - 55% chance, this is a team that will pay for guys that get to the QB, and they gave Javon Hargrave good FA money, so could see them paying market for a homegrown guy.

Becton - 50% chance, since he was a "first-round bust" prior to this season, he's never had a chance to secure a big payday and this might be his only chance. If we didn't have Steen (and Stoutland) I think they would prioritize him more. Always a chance he is willing to give the team a loyalty discount, though, for their part in him being in this position.

Sweat - 20% chance, his history of knee issues (and their own knowledge of his long-term prognosis), plus the regular stretches where he disappears, will scare them off from matching anything close to the mega-contract he's likely to get somewhere else. They will gladly take the 4th, maybe even 3rd, round comp pick they might get.

These 4 will be interesting but there are a couple more. I would like to see them re-sign Isaiah Rodgers, and am pretty excited to see if Kenny G can get some good runs on another team that needs a RB

Baun is the only guy on that list that I think will be back. I expect the Eagles to draft in the trenches for this draft.

It kinda depends on what they think with jordan davis. If they sign milton williams they let davis walk next year

I think the team needs Jordan Davis or his type more than we realize. He does a lot of the dirty work inside on the early downs.

Yep. He hasn’t turned into the three down guy they wanted him to when they drafted him. But he’s important. I think he will be here next year.

This is where we will see if they change their approach from last time. However someone pointed out that Milton Williams is exactly the type of guy Howie targets in free agency. Mid 20's, had a couple good seasons, ready to break out and be great for the next 3-4 years.

Think Baun is back and probably don't need to break the bank but will be good money.

Milton will be back with a back heavy deal that can be restructured many times.

Sweat walks. Jalyx Hunt more than Nolan Smith made this possible.

Becton depends on the deal. They have a replacement for him. Unless they feel he can transition back to tackle at some point when Lane leaves, I think he's gone.

I haven’t heard others talking about this but I’m curious about it myself. Lane is basically year to year at this point and 6’7” 350 pound guys are hard to find. On the flip side, if another team wanted to pay him tackle money, he’s as good as gone.

Please take Staley and leave CP here. 🤞
Anyone who coaches two rookies that made the impact Mitchell and DeJean did is gonna get attention from other teams.

Yeah, for sure. But, I’m still hoping nobody poaches him this year. He’s clearly a great coach. Hurtt and King, too. Thankfully, Vic doesn’t have aspirations aside from staying in Philly.

TRADE UP FOR MITCHELL OR ARNOLD NOW

Wow. Really never even considered Mitchell dropping this far. Pretty sweet

Huge character guy too though. He will learn a lot from those older CBs. I love it.

The reason I liked Mitchell more was the speed. I think they’re close in coverage but a CB with a 4.5 doesn’t sit well with me at this level.

Like they said on NFLN, there’s not a box Mitchell doesn’t check. He appears to have it all now he needs to be coached up.

Trade up and get DeJean.

Safe to say I’m ecstatic how the draft played out last night. Mitchell is a stud in the making.

I also had a dream we drafted Cooper in the 2nd last night, so there’s that as well.

Trade up???!!!???!!!

for Cooper Dejean!!?!!!? wt f is going on in Philly?

Love the pick. Dejean is an amazing talent. Could’ve easily been a 1st rounder. Does he play Safety?

Dejean said the Eagles were gonna pick him at 22 if Mitchell wasn’t there.
So fun to look back at some of this stuff. Take a read through pages 37--40 in the old thread, getting Mitchell and Cooper seemed amazing THEN, and they turned out somehow even better than expected. Love when that kinda hype doesn't disappoint.

My list of pending/free agents, in order of how I think the Eagles seem them prioritized. Bolded guys stay

Baun - Vic basically invented this guy. He seems to get that too. Turned this guy into the best LB in football. Vic has more sway than I believe is being reported also. He signs somewhere bt the deal we didn't give TJ Edwards and the deal Patrick Queen signed this last year. Vic says "Do the deal Howie"

Milton - Normally I would say this is the top guy, but given the cost to keep + the cost we have already invested/decisions/contracts to be paid to Carter for sure and possibly Jordan Davis.
Another key factor here is this guy is *BOTH* a Howie guy AND a Fangio guy. There was a video that went viral when the Eagles selected him and one guy on the Eagles staff at the time was not happy about it (Video shows Howie going for a fist bump, the guy shakes his head/leaves Howie hanging and Howie has this WTF body language/no audio) and Vic said on record. Its a deep deep DT draft, but I just think the team values the position too much to let a guy like this go. He and Carter play so complementary football together, its tough. I say they sign him to a very big deal, maybe not top top top of the line, but close, but still hedge their bets on what to do with Jordan Davis by drafting another DT this year.

Slay - I say they run it back on last time, try to get Slay into the HOF. I think it can be pretty affordable with like a 1 year contract with maybe lol 6 dummy years. Dude was a monster in the playoffs, would love to see him come back and if he shows he is cooked, insert Ringo if need by.

Becton - Great story, but I just feel the Eagles ALREADY have a RG on a rookie contract. No Need to spend here when an extension for Cam Jurgens is on the horizon + Stoutland U and all. He probably won't get another huge chance to make a big payday, so my guess is he signs a big deal with a team like Jax/Cle/Oak

Sweat - Great story, awesome Super Bowl. But he is gone. We cut his pay, then he hired Rosenhaus and has a monster SB. This is his ONLY chance and he is going to take *THE* biggest deal out there. Good for him, coming back from the devastating knee injury so long ago, although it still follows him around.

Slay is already under contract for two more seasons, through 2026, with dummy years on '27, '28, '29. But they can get $17M in cap relief across those years (and avoid a $16M 2025 signing bonus payout) by cutting him this season, Post-June 1st. They are limited to only 2 of those June 1st designated cuts and it's a good bet he will be one of them. I doubt a restructure is an option as that usually involves the team taking a more upfront cash hit to save on cap space and you only do that with younger guys you are pretty sure will be on the team at least another 3-4 years.

Maybe they cut him and bring him back again on something more team-friendly, but it would have to be a true 1-year (pretty cheap) deal, or else you're in a Zeke Elliot/DAL situation where the same guy has 2 contracts taking up significant cap space.

Found these on X and wanted to pass them along
Man you know I was thinking about this the other day (bc my wife convinced me to quit X/Join Tiktok and make Eagles videos) so my mind is racing more about stuff like this.

Without looking, I'm going to try to guess as many.

Offense:

Every 60+ Saquon run.
The Jalen 40+ yarder vs the Rams
Goedert vs the Saints and the Goedert triple stiff arm v the Packers

Defense:

Jalen Carter punch out on K Williams in Playoffs
Jalen Carter final play vs Rams in Playoffs
Cooper Dejean SB Pick 6
Baun SB INT
Cooper DeJean decleating Derrick Henry

Off the top of my head, lets take a look.

  • Love
Reactions: JAA
Slay is not a pending free agent. He has one more real year on his contract, followed by several void years. He has a hefty $16M bonus due before the 2025 league year begins, perhaps they will seek to restructure?

I expect Williams and Sweat to receive top-of-the-market offers that will price themselves out of the Eagles' plans. Howie will probably use significant draft capital to replace them this year, as it is apparently a very deep DL draft.

Re-signing Baun must be the top priority, I think everyone is in agreement on that. Rodgers is an RFA, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him return. I think he is a more reliable insurance policy against a CB injury than Ringo.

I really hope they make a sincere effort to re-sign Becton. I think he is an invaluable member of that line. I don't understand people who think the presence of Steen means Becton is expendable - he looked awful in his limited snaps against the Chiefs.

Between the RB depth in the draft and the Eagles' huge OL advantage, I wonder if Gainwell finds he doesn't have much of a market, and returns on a team-friendly deal.

In addition to DL, I expect Howie will focus on finding Lane Johnson's heir apparent in the draft. I'd also like to see him prioritize TE, as none of their depth at the position is particularly impressive.

Some tough choices for sure. I think corner and OT are the highest priorities
We have an answer for every player other than Baun, especially more so with Nakobe out for a long long time. We can't reasonably go into 2025 Trotter/Burks/New LB

Slay - Ringo/Rodgers waiting
Milton - Ojomo + loaded 2025 DL draft class
Becton - Steen has 2 years left on his rookie deal
Sweat - Hunt/Huff + loaded 2025 DL draft class

Sweat is the only guy I am ruling out 100% from being back though. He gone.

Sweat - definitely gone. He will get paid for his playoff performance and a weak FA class.

Becton - Probably gone. OL are in high demand and he will want to cash in.

Milton - 50/50 Depends on how much he gets. Having Davis and Carter here plus Ojomo coming on towards the end leans towards not being back but being a Howie guy and playing awesome might change that.

Baun - most likely back. Our depth at the position is weak and the draft is not an answer to replace a DPOY runner up. FA isn't an answer either because you'll be paying someone as much or more than Baun and HOPE he's as good. Just pay Baun then. He's gonna be back.

Will probably keep adding to/tweaking this, but I am reverse engineering the trade for Myles Garrett.

So far i got: Bryce Huff, 2026 Jets 3rd rounder, 2026 Eagles 2nd Rounder, some draft capital we gain from trading down from 32 in Green Bay.

2025 franchise tag cost Baun, Becton, Sweat, and Williams:

LB $27,050,000

OL $25,156,000

DE $24,727,000

DT $23,468,000

That’s a full 2025 cap hit, no deferring or spreading it out. We currently have about $12M in cap space, and about half of that will have to go to draft picks. So, no chance any of them play on the tag this season.

What is Cooper DeJean's future? Can he slide outside when the time comes or is he "just" a nickel corner?

I don't see any reason why this guy can't play outside.

For the full year, including the playoffs, per PFF, and hard to believe, the top 2 CBs in man coverage this year were:

1. Quinyon Mitchell
2. Cooper DeJean

I don't see anything stopping Cooper from becoming an outside corner, as far as ability is concerned. He's smart, big, fast (fastest time MPH for a defender this year per NGS), sticky in coverage and is a great tackler.

The Eagles are losing run game specialist/assistant offensive line T.J. Paganetti to the Saints, according to a report from Nick Underhill.

As of me typing this sentence, it’s not yet clear what Paganetti’s new title will be.

After beginning his coaching career at Oregon, Paganetti joined the Eagles as part of Chip Kelly’s original staff in 2013. A snapshot of his coaching experience since then:

2013-2014 — Eagles analyst (offense and quarterbacks)
2015-2016 — Oregon Graduate assistant/linebackers coach
2017-2018 — Eagles offensive quality control/assistant offensive line coach
2019-2020 — Eagles assistant running backs coach
2021-2022 — Eagles offensive quality control coach
2023 — Eagles run game specialist/assistant tight ends coach
2024 — Eagles run game specialist/assistant offensive line coach
