*** 2025 Pittsburgh Steelers: Rodgers officially signs 1 year deal (6 Viewers)

I'm glad that I never saw Troy P or Hines Ward playing in another uniform. I hope the same for TJ Watt.

Makes a difference when two of those guys are champions who made huge plays in the playoffs.

Watt's career is defined by playoff blowouts where the D he's on averages damn near 40 points a game they give up, and disappearing acts.

We should have traded him two months ago.

very misleading comment. Go back and watch the Baltimore playoff loss. See what Watt does on every play. TJ was TOLD to key on stopping Henry. Made it easy for Lamar to win. Blame is on Tomlin for a poor game plan and never making any adjustments despite getting exposed at will.

Love TJ, but not really intetested in seeing the team pay a 31 year old edge defender an amount set by the braintrust of the effin' Cleveland Browns.

If "they were ready to win", I could prolly hold my nose and do it. They aint ready.

They're probably going to pay him though. Hopefully he 'Heyward's' it physically, or in a couple years it could be sticky.

So Steeler homies help me out here.
Does The Rogers addition mean The Steelers are in "win now" mode?
Or is he just a big name placeholder for someone they're targeting next year?
Or has the usually reliable front office blown it.

Edited.

Please don't go around the language filter like that.

Is the answer to all of these questions: YES

The team believes it is in win now mode for sure, but it is a dictate from Rooney that they go for it every year.
Clearly looking to draft a QB next year with the draft in Pittsburgh they want to make a splash. Might lead to them doing something stupid.
The ownership hasn't been reliable in a long time. Art is not his dad.

Older NFL owners probably should go for it every year given their age. Not saying Rooney at 72 is old. Owners like Jerry Jones may not have the luxury of long term planning. Somehow I can see the Steelers always thinking they are in win now mode.

I generally like going for it most of the time. I really don't like the owner dictating football decisions

I mean, they sure shut Henry down! 186 yards rushing at 7.2 yards a clip lol. Watt had 0 tackles, 0 sacks, and 0 pressures. Your post just screams koolaid drinking excuse making.

And what about the 3 prior straight playoff losses before that with Watt where the Steelers gave up 45 points per freaking game? Not 25, not 35, but 45 freaking points a game. How many plays did Watt make again?

Watt has played in 4 playoff games. He has 8 tackles, 1 sack, and 0 forced fumbles in those 4 embarrassing blowouts where the defense was ran the f off the field.

His playoff career is a disappearing act.

Yes but they'd have considered themselves in this mode if he spurned them and likely went after someone like Cousins.

Or is he just a big name placeholder for someone they're targeting next year?
No not necessarily. He's a year one rental but being in win now mode is not compatible with having a specific QB target the next year. There is a decent sized lists of good looking prospects which helps but even with a bunch of mid round picks they can't be sure they can get in position to get one, less yet a specific target. We are a year away from a draft were pick 13 was to far out to get one of 6 QB's. So TBD on the future, could be back to playing the year to year rental game next off-season.

Or has the usually reliable front office blown it.
No. Franchise QB's don't grow on trees and they have been doing a good job, a great job IMO, filling out the QB room with at least competent level players on cheap deals that allow them to operate with flexiblity we see teams do with QB's on rookie contracts and even accrued comp picks. Reaching for Pickett was the mistake and IMO they are doing a good job of staying patient but at the same time highly diligent to trying to work out the QB room with the options available to them.

Genuinely ask you to watch the game and TJ specifically. Lack of stats had nothing to do with TJ and all about coaching. Baltimore abused Tomlin.

Just because Tomlin was out-schemed per usual doesn't mean Watt is absolved or played good. Tomlin could have been out coached again AND Watt could have been a non-factor as well. He was the same ghost he was in his first three playoff blowouts, of which I've watched every single play of.

So what is your point again? Troy and Ward and multi-time champions. Ward especially was a PHENOMENAL playoff performer. Watt is not. Dems the facts.

Mike Tomlin’s Quarterback Mismanagement

Since Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement, Mike Tomlin has consistently failed to evaluate and develop quarterbacks, leading to instability and wasted opportunities.
  • Mitch Trubisky was an obvious failure yet started more games than he should have.
  • Kenny Pickett was a severe overdraft, eventually losing his job to Mason Rudolph, who looked better in camp.
  • Russell Wilson and Justin Fields were wasted in 2024, with Fields going 4-2 before Tomlin inexplicably replaced him a head coach decision, not a collaborative staff move.
  • Aaron Rodgers at 41 is the latest questionable decision, continuing the cycle of stopgap solutions.
  • Charlie Batch has criticized Tomlin, noting his refusal to build a long-term plan, keeping the Steelers stuck in mediocrity.
Until Tomlin changes his approach, the Steelers will struggle to find stability at quarterback.

Point - It is faulty logic to insinuate the blowout was TJ Watt’s fault. Any elite DE would have the same epic fail stat wise when schemed out of the game by the coach.

A better fact to consider, Baltimore respected TJ so much, they didn’t run his way. They ran away from Watt to win. TJ was tasked with taking away the RB ability cutting back. He was very successful at doing what he was tasked.

Let’s say for a minute TJ was not a Steeler in that game, well, Baltimore could have opened up their play calling to run right. TJ is a force.

TJ was told to stop Lamar on every play, not Henry as you mentioned. But even if you throw out that game for whatever reason, the defense is the supposed strength of the team, TJ is the star of the defense, and the defense has been abysmal in multiple consecutive playoff losses.

It's OK to like TJ without sugar coating the reality that the defense has not held up their end of the deal in recent playoff games.

Not trying to defend the list of crappy QBs above but it isn’t unusual for a team to struggle finding a replacement for their longtime franchise QB.

Lots of Steelers fans don’t seem to remember the years between Bradshaw and Big Ben. And that was with Dan Rooney as the owner.

There are many other examples, just look at the Patriots since Brady left.

I think the Steelers work out a 3 year extension with Watt sometime during camp. Not sure he will get Garrett money but it will be close.

However if the plan is to draft a potential franchise QB next season then it makes more sense to let TJ play out his contract with the team this season and let him move on.
