2025 Team Defense & Defense by Committee Thread (2 Viewers)

For those of you who will draft before the FBG article comes out I did a quick look for one of my leagues that just finished drafting looking almost exclusively at the first 1/3rd to 1/2 of the season. According to my notes the following are among the decent options, although several combos have top 10 D options and likely won't be included in the FBG options:
BALT/LAC
LAC/NE
BALT/PHIL
DENV/LAC
Phil/WASH
NO/NYG
GB/CLEV

I ended up with DENV/LAC.....SEAT/HOUS/JAX/HOUS/CLEV first 5 weeks....DENV vs LAC week 6....JETS or SEAT week 7....JAX/ATL week 8/9

The Denver/ Chargers is perfect. you don’t have to go too early to get Denver and the Chargers are going late.

Cleveland was going way late but has moved up recently. People are starting to look at the schedules.

I never keep two defenses but if I was going to, I love the look of pairing Green Bay with New Orleans. Two top defenses that both improved themselves in the off-season and alternate hard matchups and easy matchups perfectly for most of the year.

Worst offenses/best matchups per this list:
  • Jets: Best-4, 2nd-3, 3rd-1 (8 total)
  • Lions: Best-3, 2nd-4, 3rd-1 (8)
  • Texans: Best-2, 2nd-4, 3rd-2 (8)

  • Giants: Best-2, 2nd-2, 3rd-3 (7)
  • Bears: Best-2, 2nd-2, 3rd-1 (5)

  • Commanders: Best-1, 2nd-0, 3rd-2 (3)
  • Seahawks: Best-1, 2nd-0, 3rd-2 (3)
  • Jaguars: Best-1, 2nd-0, 3rd-1 (2)
  • Panthers: Best-0, 2nd-1, 3rd-1 (2)

  • Falcons: Best-0, 2nd-0, 3rd-1 (1)
  • Steelers: Best-0, 2nd-0, 3rd-1 (1)

Looking at Mike Clay's projections for Points Scored:
  1. Falcons - 312
  2. Texans - 317
  3. Steelers - 320
  4. Bears - 331
  5. Seahawks - 338
  6. Panthers - 348
  7. Giants - 350
  8. Jets - 357
  9. Jaguars - 369
  10. Browns - 369
  11. Lions - 374
  12. Dolphins - 383
  13. Titans - 388
  14. Saints - 391
  15. Commanders - 399
Projected interceptions:
  1. Mayfield CAR - 16
  2. Fields CHI - 15
  3. Lawrence JAC - 15
  4. Flaco/Wilson - 14
  5. Jones NE - 14
  6. Jackson BAL - 14
  7. Tannehill TEN -14
  8. Stafford LAR - 14
  9. Lock/Smith SEA - 13
  10. Mills - 13
  11. Lance SF - 13
  12. Tagovailoa NIA - 13

I want to share before the season starts, I did something different this year and took 2 Defenses right at the point teams start taking their 1st.
I jumped the gun and didn't want to spend the transaction fee weekly of trying to hit on defenses, but I will say it's fun to churn that 2nd defense on the roster and try to play terrific match ups.

Bills and Dolphins, not sure the Bills will be as good as they have been recently, rookie CB but their offense puts them in very advantageous positions with leads and being able to tee off on the pass rush allowing their DBs to take chances so I like that. Miami is going to be a Top 10 Defense this season, maybe higher. They brought all 11 starters back plus the Nickel and Dime backs.

I would hope at your draft you might get 1 decent Defense but I assume some of you are just trying to simply find something in dynasty if you don't have one fo the premier defenses.
I drafted Defense/ST in like the 12th and 13th round. We had a couple surprising teams go undrafted, 20 of them have to come off the board so you have a smaller pool to churn from every week. Some of you compete in leagues where 15-18 defenses are on the waiver wire each week.

A top 12 interceptions list and no mention of Jameis? My my how times have changed.

I have this pairing in one league and am loving the first 7 weeks. Note that they have the same bye Week 14 though. Weeks 8, 12, and 17 are the only ones without a clear favorite IMO.

Saints vs. Falcons, Bucs, Panthers, Vikes, Seahawks, Bengals, Cardinals, Raiders, Ravens, Steelers, Rams, Niners, Bucs, Falcons, Browns, Eagles, Panthers
Packers vs Vikings, Bears, Bucs, Patriots, NY Giants, NY Jets, Commanders, Bills, Lions, Cowboys, Titans, Eagles, Bears, Rams, Dolphins, Vikings, Lions

saw it mentioned in another thread but SF and LAC have a good pairing the first 7 weeks. If you can stomach the SF vs. Rams matchup in Week 8 you could hold LAC through Week 9 and catch the Falcons again. Back half of their schedules is considerably tougher.

SF 49ers vs. Bears, Seahawks, Broncos, LA Rams, Panthers, Falcons, Chiefs, Rams, BYE, Chargers, Cardinals, Saints, Dolphins, Bucs, Seahawks, Commanders, Raiders, Cardinals
Chargers vs. Raiders, Chiefs, Jaguars, Texans, Browns, Broncos, Seahawks, BYE, Falcons, Niners, Chiefs, Cardinals, Raiders, Dolphins, Titans, Colts, LA Rams, Broncos

No stranger to DST by committee in my weird CBS scoring leage where a good DST is essential to a good season but we cut bench depth this yr so I drafted bills to not have to deal with it

that said I think for scoring systems like mine that score yardage and pt totals allowed the loss of Bills best DB White until at least week 4 is a bigger deal than ppl are talking about and I’m looking at adding chargers now

easish beginning of the yr schedule and I’m betting Khalil Mack was making a business decision last year when he was out all the time and if He comes in like he came into Chicago it’s gonna be a heck of a ride

early Chicago Khalil was the most impactful edge rusher I know of since Reggie White, dude just took over games

Drafted Saints. Good week 1 matchup but I'm thinking of Grabbing Cleveland before the week starts for their next 3 matchups. Have to figure out who to drop.

Accurate

“Things may not be much better this season, as the defense has weak spots all over the lineup, exacerbated by injuries to Romeo Okwara, Jerry Jacobs and rookie Josh Paschal,” Clay wrote.

At the end of his article, he provides unit-by-unit rankings, and it really highlights where Clay believes the weaknesses lie with this defense. He ranks the interior defensive line (29th), linebackers (32nd) and cornerbacks (31st) as bottom-five units, while the edge defenders (21st) and safeties (26th) are not much better.

The Lions leading two tacklers last year were both DBs, which speaks to how easy it is to pass on Detroit, and how often rushers broke through the first and second level. Had he stayed healthy, ILB Alex Anzalone might have led the team in tackles. But that's the thing - he was hurt often at Florida, logging only 577 snaps, and he's had three out of five seasons end with injuries. His PFF grade last year was 35.4. He cannot cover and he led the team in missed tackles. The team led the NFL in missed tackles. Reluctantly - they waited several weeks - Brad Holmes gave him a second 1-year contract.

He displays good leadership. He played for AG and MCDC in New Orleans and knows the system. He's got great hair. It's maddening that a guy who, at best, should a rotational third LB wears the green dot helmet in Detroit.

Rookies Aidan Hutchinson (EDGE, 2nd overall pick) and Malcolm Rodriguez (ILB, 6th round) are fan favorites and should be an improvement. Hutch has been as advertised in every faucet. He's a face of the franchise type player, should be a super start. Rogriggo is a terrific read and react player who understands the intricacies of the game better than most veterans - he'll be the next green dot leader on the team.

But it's gonna be a rough year for this defense. They just have a serious talent deficiency overall.

Our league puts a premium on rostering two defenses as well. We pay transaction fees for free agent pickups so if a team is streaming Ds all season it gets expensive. Having a good defense is also a big positional advantage with our league taking away points for yards allowed, and points scored. So most teams roster two defenses and rotate them based on matchups. The waiver wire is pretty barren all season. I waited and took Miami. I feel they are very underrated. Scored well last year in our system and, as you said, everyone is coming back. Paired them with the Steelers whose schedule meshes well. Was able to wait and get both as like the 10th and 13th Ds off the board.

I’m starting to wonder if we’re all grossly underrating the Eagles adding Jordan Davis, Kazir White, Nakobe Dean, and CJG. Their schedule almost all season is pretty easy (insofar as we can judge those things as we sit here today).

I have the Packers but picked up the Titans for week 1 matchup against the Giants
I have the Packers in both leagues. In one of the leagues Im rolling with Philly over them. In the other I might add Miami. Tennessee is available as well. I love the Packers def this year and they might be set and forget but for week 1 I dont like their matchup (I feel like the games in Min are always shootouts) so I will see how it plays out.

I dropped them because I want the Vikings to win. And somehow own Cook and Jefferson and Irv this year, so i want them to score.

I’m not sure I should let my homerism factor here. Currently starting Cinci, and while I like week 1… I wonder if I’ll even to roster them next week.

lazy man's guide to streaming Week 1

what's the over/under? pick from the bottom half or lower

Cinci was pretty meh last week, but now they get Cooper Rush and then the Jets.

I think they are a solid hold the next two weeks.

Yup. Had Denver lined up, but after Geno lit them up going 13-his first 13 I don't know. Game against HOU is at home, but DEN showed me nothing last night.

Cinci @DAL is what I'm looking at. Would have to drop Den. Hell...that DAL offense looked terrible even with Dak and I think they lost another O lineman.

LAR at home steaming mad against ATL could work too.

Cincinnati @ Dallas looks very promising with Cooper Rush at QB and with the issues Dallas is having with their offensive line.

Steelers vs. Patriots - the loss of T.J. Watt is not insignificant; however, the Steelers still have plenty of defensive talent and the Patriots offense looks ripe for exploitation:

The Athletic's Chad Graff notes the Patriots ran only two personnel groups and used play-action on just eight percent of their early-down dropbacks.

As Graff writes, "The only other team in Week 1 that used just two personnel groupings was the Carolina Panthers. As a general rule of thumb, it’s not good when your offense is compared to the Carolina Panthers." New England's quarterback was in some major discomfort after taking a few shots in Week 1 and our first taste of the Matt Patricia/Joe Judge OC reign looked pitiful. This offense is in a bad place as it looks to right the ship in Week 2 against the Steelers.

Browns vs. Jets - the Browns at home versus Joe Flacco and a Jets offense that only managed a single touchdown in garbage time in week one? Sign me up for that.
