OAKLAND, Calif. -- Disgruntled Oakland Raiders fans are making a high-profile plea for owner Al Davis to step down as the team's general manager.

AP Photo/Paul SakumaThe group that put up the billboard says it has gathered 21,000 signatures for a petition asking Al Davis to step down as GM.

A billboard was posted on the freeway near the Oakland Coliseum this week, saying "MR. DAVIS, DO THE RIGHT THING, PLEASE HIRE A GM."

The group that put up the billboard says it has gathered 21,000 signatures for a petition asking Davis to step down as general manager. The petition also calls on Davis to hire a new GM, hire a Super Bowl-caliber coach and "agree to refrain from intervention in personnel or football operational matters."

The Raiders (3-8) have won three Super Bowls under Davis' leadership but appear headed to a seventh straight losing season. Oakland's 27-80 record since the start of the 2003 season is the worst in the NFL.

Al Davis cares not a whit what any Raider fan thinks or feels. He is the father of our Lord Darth Vader. The undead answers to no one.

He will live till 100 and slowly rot in his Run DMC throwback jumpsuit. Only hope is to show old re-run tape of the 70's Raider games so he can cheer for his commitment to excellence teams, make him think he is watching live games. Then someone with more than one marble in his head can bring this team back from the dead.

Are they sure it is 21,000 and not 2,100,000? Seriously, for such a "die hard" group of fans, this certainly took a long time. I realize what he has meant to the team, let alone the game, but seriously this is way overdue.

Complete waste of time. Why not put your efforts into something constructive?

Al runs this team until he takes his last breath, sadly.

A great majority of their fan base has a hard time with the reading writing thing..???

Why waste your time? Even IF he were to step down as GM, he is still the owner... he will still have his tentacles all over the GM and would still be calling the shots. Oakland fans are in the same boat as us Lions fans -- you need new owners. NOW.

When I reach the age where I don't have what it takes anymore, I hope I realize it and do something about it before I reach the age where I am not capable of seeing it.

I agree with everything you wrote. But for a Raiders fan...who only wants to see a winning team....what is the obvious conclusion one should draw [from your statement above] about where to put their efforts?

Many Raider fans like Al Davis and identify with him. You'll never get a ground swell of support to oust Davis or for him to change his ways out of that fan base in the way that you would many other places that simply won't tolerate it.

I live on the east coast and I am not even a Raiders fan. I'll sign that petition right away, just out of compasion for the coaches, players and fans of the Raiders!!!

Al is not the GM he is "president of the general partner" or even "managing general partner" but not GM.
