Suspect(s) have fled. The 3 victims were conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. Nearby Jefferson school is on lockdown. This happened 1/2 hour ago so news is just breaking on CNN.

Atypical profile from typical school shootings (where the shooter is generally targeting volume over specific folks, and looking to die before being taken captive). This the school (bad kids) and the approach (shoot a couple targets then run) looks more like a traditional vengance-style shooting.
In any event... horrible stuff. I hope they get the shooter(s) and put them away for good. :(

My bro is a substitute at such a school down in the LA area. The most rewarding job ever for him. He's substituted for regular high schools as well but there is nothing like helping those who are down and out or troubled kids. You should see his fb page. 500 former students who praise him. He will go out with these former students, celebrate their bdays with them, etc. He's not like a regular teacher/person in that he isn't "over them" but is with them. He knows how to work with such kids to get them to pay attention and try. Not every teacher can do this and he rarely unemployed by the districts he serves. He may be 41 but he can easily dial down to more their level and so he has many former students as friends in the 18 years he's been doing this.

A friend of mine works at one of these types of schools in New York City. A student bit her badly enough she had to get stitches and go on a whole host of antibiotics. Unsure of pras status on facebook.

Shooting occurred outside the school and the 2 guys and 1 girl shot ran into the school for help- so technically it wasn't a school shooting as we tend to envision. Didn't say if those shot go to that school though and no idea who the shooter(s) are that are on the loose.

If there was a school shooting in Chicago, it would be big news. Why? Because it's children being killed.

School shootings. It's no longer big news. It's now a monthly occurance if not weekly.

The pattern with this one doesn't line up with other school shootings. This one seems more criminal they say since the shooter didn't off himself to send a message and is trying to get away.

Exactly! Every weekend multiple people are shot, killed, injured on the south side of Chicago. Many are children and teens. I guess that is not news unless it is a white kid in a school, or maybe a white kid in the city. If a child dies in my white suburb of chicago it would be news, huge funeral, mourning and possibly a school memorial and that is 20 miles away.

I think it's more that these shootings are happening in areas that aren't problematic like S. side of Chicago is. For national news stations they can't talk about every shooting as it would take up their entire air time so they focus on those that are unusual to see for that area. This one not only because the shooting happened on the premise but the gunman(s) are still on the loose. For local news though we at least where I am hear about em all and there's a lot in Oakland alone.

I still don't see the point. Because we don't pay enough attention to shootings in Chicago, we shouldn't pay attention to ones in Oregon?

All students shot are going to be physically ok. Emotionally and all of course is another story. Seems this area is full of schools/kids so great concern since it's not known what caused this and manhunt is underway.
A friend of one guy who was shot says he's a good kid, not into gangs/drugs, etc. He goes to church so he's surprised he was a victim if he was an intended target.
