31 for 31 halloween movies (1 Viewer)

I wasn't able to watch as many as I wanted but I going to finish off the SAW series tonight. Maybe watch a couple of more after that. I got to see a few good movies I have never seen before.
Okay, Can I ask you... how do you feel about the Saw series?(like in general)I think they should of stopped after 2.3 was blah.

After viewing 5 I agree that they probably should have stopped at two. I was entertained by the others though but they were not as good as the first two.

One movie I keep pimping that not many have watched is A Tale Of Two Sisters.
I recently watched this. I found it interesting and at times confusing.I thought the nature of the way the story was delivered made it pretty obvious that something more was going on than what we were seeing. I speculated a few possibilities for the true outcome and came pretty close. I am still a little confused by the relationship between the step mother and Soo-mi.

Overall I found it to be interesting enough to be entertaining, but I don't see this as a film that would have much mass appeal.

Caught up a little last night....

The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Really caught me by surprise. Cream of the crop when it comes to slasher movie homages. Mockumentary style setup works great. Pretty funny, really a must see for slasher fans, but doesn't work quiet as well as straight up horror.

3.5/5
If I did ratings I would give it 6 stars out of 5. It's not a great movie and there are some obvious flaws that get glossed over but I absolutely L-O-V-E-D the premise of this film. The first two acts had me constantly chuckling at the obvious devotion of the film makers to creating plausible reality based scenarios for super natural slashers (Freddy, Jason and Michael Myers). The "How to become a super natural slasher" premise is awesome. The last third did what was necessary but I found the decisions of the protagonists to be quite puzzling given the information they had. And it fell apart a little bit.

But overall I just truly enjoyed this film. It was clever and fun, which probably isn't the best endorsement for a horror film, but this is more of a horror/comedy. I was happy to suspend my disbelief for this film. I am not sure how they could create a sequel but I would be willing to watch it if they do.

You have no idea how much cardio I have to do!

-Don't they just smash out the windows?

-You'd think so but...no. :hifive:

ETA: I am not saying this is a great film, plenty of plot holes and crappy acting, for me it's all about the premise and clever delivery of the first two acts.

I just watched Blair Witch Project for the first time. My 11 yr. old son watched it with me. He kept asking me when the scary parts were coming. I told him to just be patient, they were working up to it. The movie was pretty boring and annoying to watch with all the bickering, but finally it got to a point where it looked like we might see something even remotely scary. And then it ended. My boy is pretty upset right now for wasting 2 hours on this flick. I have no idea why some of you folks even like this movie. Please explain.

:lmao:

I saw it in the theater during opening weekend. Lots of people jumping/yelling etc, and that definitely added to it. Personally, I was able to put myself in the situation and was creeped out. Might not hold up if I watched it now on my TV at home, but I really liked it when I saw it.

Also, it was ahead of it's time as far as the way it was marketed/shot and convincing a bunch of people that it's real. This type of horror movie is coming back with movies like Paranormal Activity et al. I would put BWP in the conversation of top horror movies, but as I stated, maybe I need to watch it again too.

Never saw it in the theaters, and my home viewing experience was pretty similar to Mr. V's. Boring as hell. I imagine it would've been considerably different with the crowd atmosphere, big screen and novelty value, though. :bag:

BWP is a great example of doing more with less and and leaving it open to the imagination of the audience. I think they pulled it off to great effect. I'm a fan.

:goodposting: All existing copies should have their labels removed and be placed into home video collections. I don't think preteen boys were the target audience for this, especially if they are expecting "one of the scariest movies ever." It's all about atmosphere and lulling the audience into believing that what they are seeing is world. The whole thing is essentially a set up for that last 20 second scene, and I think it works awesome.

Bump for 2012.

I am going to attempt to watch 31 horror movies in 31 days again. I am going to try to watch 31 movies I haven't seen before. I am going to start with the one of the oldest movies "Nosferatu(1922)" and work my way forward to present day.

I have never had a chance to watch this one.

I haven't read through the thread yet, but these movies scare me:

Audition

Deep Red

Trauma

Dementia 13

The New York Ripper

28 Days Later

The Orphanage

The Ring

John Carpenter's The Thing

Help me remember the name of this horror movie. I watched it when I was pretty young so I don't have much to go on. I would have been released anywhere from about '80-93.-Every time someone got killed the 'death count' flashed on the screen-When a fly got killed it only got counted as a half-The killer was walking up stairs and stepped in a piece of gum and said 'Mmm, sugar free'.
2 years too late, but the answer is "Student Bodies"Horsehead bookends....

best part about this month is my dvr is recording movies nonstop. almost eveyr movie channel is playing horror flicks

This is a great list. For Japanese stuff, try "Cure" or "Spiral". More psychological than supernatural, but if you liked Audition, you'll like them. Someone in the thread also mentiond Dark Water - really good.Session 9 is a good one.Carnival of Souls is fun and creepy (if not a bit cheesy)I like Dario Argento a lot - Suspiria, Tenebre, Profondo Rosso, and Inferno are good (really want to see a region 1 Suspiria bluray)

:goodposting:J-horror sure is great. I think the common theme between j-horror and Italian horror films is the relentless terror. American horror films sometimes have respite - even comic relief. But Argento, Fulchi, and guys like Takashi Miike really don't care if you are frightened for 90 solid minutes.

A couple days ago I thought about trying something like this again as well, but don't seem to have enough time. Good thing horror movies are usually short. Would like a bunch I haven't seen before, but will still go with a few that it has been years since I have seen. Like you, I was thinking about mixing in some old movies, but usually don't find movies that old from the genre that compelling.

Last night I started it off with Slither. I had a fair amount of fun with it. There were some great lines/laughs in it, but the stupid looking main monster really did the movie in for me. Thought it was average, and probably wouldn't rush to watch it again.

Italian horror is more dreamlike with illusions and psychological than american horror. If you want a good ghost movie try "The Others", surprisingly Nichole Kindman can act.

V/H/S was really good. Should be On Demand still and will be released in theaters in 2 weeks. Great little Horror Anthology.

Yep - foreign directors just seem to be better equipped at building and sustaining tension throughout a movie. American horror has fallen back on body count, gore, and laughs - and we are even falling behind the French in the gore as well (Martyrs......). I love all types of horror, but if you actually want to be scared, you are better off looking outside the States.

I haven't read through this thread, but I'm a fan of a lot of older horror/thriller movies... I think the pacing and mood of those movies appeals to me more. Some that come to mind are Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, and most Hitchcock movies.

I'm probably more excited than I should be for the upcoming Bluray 3D release of "Dial M for Murder."

A few that I have enjoyed for various reasons that I got around to seeing in the last few years and people might have skipped over:

Splinter

Ginger Snaps

Behind the Mask

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Hatchet

Black Christmas (1974)

[REC]

Orphan

Trick 'R Treat

The Others was very effective. As was Stir Of Echoes. And yeah, Kidman is a really good actor. Check out To Die For.

This always fascinates me, because the modern horror film often substitutes gore for chills. When Dario Argento is at his best, of course you have gore. But the non-gore content is very disturbing and frightening.

I think it's just a natural trend that started 30 years ago or so with the Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc.. seems like the tend was away from the thriller/supernatural and straight to the slasher. I enjoy slashers still, but they aren't scary and they are damn near always the same. But I think that got American audiences geared more toward the killers' side and just wanting to see people die in messed up ways. Now we are just continuing on that path. Sure there are others along the way, but I think it started when we started wearing Freddy shirts and cheering for him.

Right, but American slasher films are a diluted form of Italian giallo films. The original Italian version is much more terrifying to me.

For something recent, I'd add The Cabin in the Woods to the list. I'd give it 4 out of 5 just for its originality.

While I am generally a fan of Japanese and Korean horror films I often find them mentally exhausting for the very reason you mention.

** Friendly FBG warning.

Whatever you do, do not watch Rest Stop it is are terrible, overly melodramatic, forced emotion, sappy, cheesy and ham fisted.

Also Wrong Turn is crap.

Both films are garbage.
