See No Evil(2006)

I was pretty disappointed with this movie. The characters are unbelievably "flat" in a Hollywood-way. You got the REAL bad #####, The REAL cool Guy, the smart computer-guy and the shoplifting black guy as well as of course a really powerful villain who throws people across the hotel all the time. Gregory Dark directs this cheesy horror flick that has Glen Jacobs (Kane from WWF/whatever it calls itself nowadays) in his cinematic debut. He plays Jacob Goodknight,

Ju-on (The Grudge) (Fear Net on demand..) Released 2003.

This is not a brilliant film, but a solid, entertaining and fairly creepy horror film, if not a really genuinely scary one. If you've seen the American remake, 'The Grudge', you'll know exactly what you're getting in to.The movie is somewhat slow, especially compared to the horror flicks we're used to.If you like Ringu and other similar Japanese horror films, then you will enjoy Ju-On.Asian Horror accomplishes what American Horror rarely does... it gives you "the creeps." Can't say that for many American films. Ju-On just does that very well.

Land of the Dead or Shaun of the Dead?

Also has anybody watched the other Romero movies - Diary of the Dead or Survival of the Dead?

I saw Diary of the Dead and enjoyed it. I thought it was a clever, sometimes funny, sometimes suspenseful, more than sometimes :excited: but overall interesting enough to recommend.Mind you I set a lower bar for these types of films. I am not expecting great cinema so it allows me to be more lenient with my bar for entertainment.

Getting ready to fire up Dog Soldiers.
Interested to see a review of this on in here. I've been avoiding this one for the same reason I was avoiding Ginger Snaps, but this one shows up on 'best of' lists as well.
Give Dog Soldiers a shot, you wont be disappointed. Realistic in a 28 Days Later sorta way and you get e genuine sense of isolation at certain parts that ramps up the sense of creepiness to the point of making you wonder "what would you do". It also has moments of humor that work well in the setting and the actors do a fine job Except for one. Once I figure how to spoiler I'll say who.

Tonight's fare was Paranormal Activity

As big of a fan of BWP as I was, the whole "it really happened and here is the video footage" angle doesn't have many repeat viewings before it's tired. I think BWP worked more for me because there were more people interviewed, different locations, etc... Couldn't get into this movie at all. Gets a point up b/c I would suggest it to people who haven't seen this type of movie before but like I stated, these movies only work if you think they are real or if you can still suspend that thought long enough to get into the movie. 4/10.

Aw the heck with it. I was going to fire up Darkon (from the documentary thread) but I have this as well. So why not?
I am a fan of Kevin McKidd (poor Tommy Boy) and this movie has some entertaining moments but as much as I want to recommend it, I really can't. I found the antagonists behavior and abilities to be wildly inconsistent and inexplicable. And I just didn't find them particularly scary. I found that while the characters fit some of the many possible expected stereotypes (Gung Ho, Comic Relief, Just Wanna Get Home, Sinister Guy, Everyman etc) none of them were particularly well developed. Not really much gratuitous gore (three scenes jump out but were mercifully brief). Overall I found it to be meh. Give it a go but if you don't I don't think you'll be overly disappointed.

There is no Spoon.Dog Soldiers is pretty great in a 80's campy style sort of way. Low budget werewolves are well done and soldiers are pretty cool even though the accents are pretty thick.

:goodposting: I found myself laughing more than being scared.

I thought the nod to The Matrix was a little odd although I did chuckle. Made me think the director was really trying to go for campy instead of scary but if that was truly his intent it really didn't work for me. I didn't find it to be particularly campy or scary.Agree that the creature effects were well done, particularly with no CGI involved.

I really enjoyed Dog Soldiers. It was a lot of fun. Yes there were some plot issues but it was entertaining as hell.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Kevin Mckidd. Big fan since Rome.

I don't mind plot issues, I have low expectations for plot, but the wild inconsistencies in the abilities and methods of the bad guys were a little much to bear.McKidd was perfectly cast as Lucius Vorenus in Rome.

Queuing up REC, REC2 and Quarantine. Not sure if I should watch Quarantine first and then the movie that it was based on (Rec). Rec and Rec2 don't have subtitles and I don't speak Spanish but I thought I would give them a go.

Silent Hill(2006)

I was expecting another video game movie flop and was amazed with how close they stuck with the game. However, When you sit down and watch Silent Hill you have that same creepy feeling running down your spine. The same tightness in your stomach and the same sheer appreciation for what an amazing psychological trip you take when you begin the "Silent Hill Experience".The Film is full of game cut scenes that were literally transfered into real life motion picture. This is a film that everyone who has ever played the game or read the story of Silent Hill should see.

Phone

I must admit that I was satisfied with Phone, but I have this certain feeling that Phone is just nothing except a copycat from the previous horror flicks. Phone is fairly entertaining and had it frightening moments.Seo-woo Eun did a fantastic job playing as the little girl.(one of the main characters) Good pop corn flick, might watch again.

/I watched Quarantine and the REC (in Spanish). I really liked them both. Pretty much identical films. 8/10.

I started watching REC 2 in Spanish. I stopped because I want to get it in English. I am intrigued by the direction it was taking about 20 minutes in.

Not sure if it's held up at all, nor even if it was good at the time, but I'm lining up a movie I haven't seen since I was a kid, in The Stuff.

Dead Heat

More trash than horror. Joe Piscopo is so awful at everything he does its hard not to jeer him with joy. Seems like he only has one liners and they are all equally painful. Treat Williams gained a little charisma over the years he doesn't have here. Highlight is Asian restaurant cousine coming alive and attacking them. This includes broiled ducks, stuffed hogs, chicken wings, and a beef cow corpse. Cool ending though.

Ugh, Caught this flick on cinemax earlier this morning. Word's can't describe how bad Dead Heat is.

Its actually so bad, that it's rather easy to be entertained.

Wow. I forgot about that one.

I watched REC2 last night. I liked it. Good on it's own but as a sequel it is awesome. I really liked the spin they put on the "infection". Couldn't see it so much in Quarantine but they kind of hinted at the direction it would take in REC. I enjoyed both.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Great paranoia film. Very well directed, and interesting characters. Love how it is all through the viewpoints of just a couple of characters and how you have no idea of the scope of the epidemic. Modern films could take a lot of notes from this. One of Sutherland's better characters.

4.5/5

ETA:

Matthew Bennell: What are they?

Elizabeth Driscoll: Speed. They'll keep us awake.

Matthew Bennell: How many are you suppose to take?

Elizabeth Driscoll: It says take one.

Matthew Bennell: Take five.

 The 1956 version with Kevin McCarthy is also very good.

Black Christmas (1974 version)

Black Christmas is a genuinely very effective classic horror film. I mean I liked it. It's scary, it's suspenseful and the acting is good and it leaves you chilled. One of the elements that works sufficiently is the fact that we never see the killer's face but are left up to leave it with our imagination to figure out who is it. It's not a Gorey film but the implied violence is very effective. It's a film so eerie and creepy and sometimes violent that I would compare it to John Carpenter's Halloween.

Splinter:

Went in not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised. Sure there are dumb moves and a couple cheesy things but overall I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. Part of the fun of horror movies is the blood and yelling at the people for doing dumb #### or laughing at plot holes.. One of the better recent horror movies I've seen. 7/10.

Who Can Kill a Child?:

Fairly cheesy 70s flick that's basically a creepier, Spanish, Children of the Corn. Thought it was OK, but nothing I'd rush out to watch again. 5/10.

This thread makes me realize Im way behind on foreign horror...Never saw Let The Right One In, Audition, Devil's Backbone, The Orphanage, REC, basically every acclaimed foreign horror movie apparently.

Whoever mentioned Slither in the horror/comedy vein I would 2nd

Id never call it very good, and borders cheese plenty, but I thought Ghost Ship was suspenseful and entertaining til the end credits. Solid cast didnt hurt - Gabriel Byrne, Julianna Marguiles, Isaiah Washington, Ron Eldard, Desmond Harrington, Karl Urban.

Im a bit behind on my reviews, but I have stuck to the 31/31.

Lets see...

The Beast of Bryar Road - "Chiller" Channel B grade Werewolf flick. Not really worth reviewing, just thought I'd mention it because I suffered through the whole thing. Terrible in every way. Even the chicks who were suppose to be hot... werent. -1/10

The Beast Within - Another Chiller Station B Flick. This one actually surprised in that it wasnt as bad as expected. Wasnt good, just wasnt awful. Good concept and all, but the acting and low budget really bring it down. 4.5/10

Dark Water - I enjoyed this movie very much. At first i thought they were going with the same tired schtick that every modern ghost story seems to follow...but they went a different way at the end of the movie. I thought that it was a refreshing spin. 7.5/10

Near Dark - 80's Vampire flick starring Bill Paxton. Had never even heard of this before, but gave it a shot based on a friends reccomendation. Said if I liked the Lost Boys, I'd probably dig this as well.... He was wrong. This was a very, very, (like welfare line) poor version of The Lost Boys. 5.75/10

The Devils Backbone- While this movie used the same tired ghost schtick I complain about above in the Dark Water Review, they somehow managed to do it in a way that left me feeling entertained. It was a good movie. It really could have been much, much better had they decided to get a little more evil and less redemption driven with the story...but it's still worth a watch. 6.75/10

Lifeforce

If you only see one 80's apocalyptic space vampire movie in your lifetime, make it this one. Some great model special effects from space and an overly-complex intriguing plot. This movie is pretty cool and has some decent creature effects.

Best opening line ever:What is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? An instant of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.

Also this line:Stay by my side as my light grows dim /as my blood slows down and my nerves shatter with stabbing pain / as my heart grows weak / and the wheels of my being turn slowly / Stay by my side /as my fragile body is racked by pain /which verges on truth / and manic time continues scattering dust / and furious life bursts out in flames. Stay by my side / as I fade / so you can point to the end of my struggle /and the twilight of eternal days / at the low, dark edge of life.

Another one I thought of last night, as far as really bad, B, 90's horror movies go, Pumpkinhead 2: Blood Wings is pretty entertaining.

Loved them both... I loved the character as well. Actually threw the second one up as my FB Status after the movie. Good stuff. :goodposting:
