31 for 31 halloween movies (1 Viewer)

Anyone have a review from last night?
I watched "Let the Right One in" Last night. It was dubbed in English. I liked it but it wasn't as much of a horror movie as it was a drama (as someone mentioned). That said, I liked it. I liked it better than Audition.I may actually go see the remake this week. I have a few days off before starting a new job on Monday.

Has anyone here ever seen the original European version of "The Vanishing"?

I think it is one of the great scary movies of all time, with an end that stays with you long after the movie.

I thought you were supposed to watch a movie before the game.

Anyway, my shipment didn't come in (just got 7 horror movies today to watch though), but I caught Hostel on IFC last night.

I know that people write off a lot of horror movies as "torture porn" lately, but my take is that you've seen people get hacked up and tortured in a lot of horror movies up to this point - Last House on the Left, Hellraisers, TCM, etc, etc. why write off newer horror movies because they are graphic? Anyway, I think I am in the minority when I say that I enjoyed the first Hostel and like it more than the Saw movies. In the Saw movies you have a killer who sets traps and makes people make a decision - usually resulting in their death. I thought - well, we've seen that idea done 5x better in Se7en. Maybe I am making too much out of it, but I thought Hostel was a decent commentary - 1/2 making fun of idiot Americans abroad, and 1/2 about how ####ed up some people are, and what people might do if they had enough money and the access to being able to hurt others this way. Again, I think I am in the minority, but I really enjoyed Hostel. That said, Hostel 2 was horrible.

Last nights fare was Ginger Snaps

Don't let the title fool you and steer you away (the reason I have been avoiding it for years). This is one enjoyable horror movie. Uses a couple geeky/goth girls (one just starting to go through puberty) as the backdrop for a great werewolf movie. Breaks down towards the end into a full-on monster movie and even that's a small complaint because of the decent effects and gore.

During the movie I was thinking about and tweaking my ratings system and will do so more today. This will land in the7/10 maybe 8/10 range - I can see why it lands on "best horror movies of the decade" lists. I would recommend it to most in here, as they don't make many werewolf movies, and this was a quality addition to the genre.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer

Kind of surprised this movie doesn't have a bigger cult following. Pretty funny and great use of monster puppets. Fans of Army of Darkness should check this out sometime.

3.5/5

Bubba Ho-Tep

Maybe I just wasn't in the mood. Funny concept for a 5 minute skit maybe, not a movie.

2.5/5

Watched A Tale of Two Sisters last night.

Def didnt live up to the hype. I think I need to mix in a couple of American films because watching too many foreighn films back to back take away from them IMO. Dont know why.

As for this movie... started off slow... REALLY REALLY slow... when it did pick up it reminded me too much of The Grudge. 2.75/5.

 I saw this expecting a cheesy horror movie and was pleasantly surprised.

Oof. Thanks for giving it a try. Maybe part of my love was that it was one of the first asian horror movies that I saw, and I could see how seeing too many of them might drop it down a bit. Also the slow beginnings seem to be a trait of these movies - Audition is quite slow for 30mins or so as well.

Had to do a double take on this line because I didn't see the word "and". I was thinking "Really? Karma? I would never have guessed."Think I'll have to check this film out because I have been avoiding it for similar reasons that you indicate.

I have been on a big documentary kick lately (because of the Must see docs thread) maybe I should suspend that and jump into the spirit of horror for the month of October.

If you're tossing Even Horizon on the list, might as well check out Pandorum

Anyone mention American Werewolf in London yet? And surely The Shining has gotten plenty of love.

I'll admit, that was a horrible sentence.

Basically I trying to think about my rating system. Every once in awhile I'll throw out a 7/10 and think "WTF does that mean?". Now I have a better idea behind any rating I post.

Schlocky.
I was entertained.
Thought it was quite bad myself.

Horror is like comedy though - people sometimes like vastly different things and are creeped out by different things. Monster movies like Pandorum or The Descent usually don't do much for me, but ghost stories will usually get a reaction from me. Also, bad CGI is a movie that seems to be taking itself seriously is never a good thing.

I'll admit that I thought the first half was far better than the second half. I wish they kept with the "no one has any idea what the hell is going on" theme, which I generally find more frightening, rather than introducing mutant-zombies and ninjas. But I still enjoyed it overall.

I think Slither has been the best cult horror film since AOD.
Really? Maybe I should watch it again.I am a fan of Nathan Fillion (BRING BACK FIREFLY!) but I thought this movie was pretty forgettable.
Fillion was decent in it, Michael Rooker is even better. I was mainly drawn to it by writer/director James Gunn. He used to donate his time (work for free) for Troma studios in the 90s. Very talented guy and I love the old school Troma style and sense of humor that seems to carry over, at least for me, in this film. Everything Troma has done since Gunn left has been little more than just flat out disgusting and repulsive.Spent my teen years following Troma studios like a cult fanatic, so maybe I'm just biased. I watched it in theaters and again a couple years ago and remembered still liking it.

Fellow fan of Firefly as well. Swearing in Chinese is one of the greatest tv schticks of all time.

Yeah, the 2nd part is what destroyed the movie for me.

Psycho(1960) "Psycho" still holds up today because of a brilliant script, outstanding performances, top-notch direction, and a host of perfectly aligned elements that produced a masterpiece that is often copied, but never duplicated. 5/5The Wicker Man. This movie is quite possibly one of the best and most underrated movies. I had always heard the original "The Wicker Man" was a classic horror movie. I have to say the original makes a lot more sense and was by far the better movie in every aspect then the remake with Nicholas Cage. The tale is one of mystery and faith, Christianity vs. paganism. Love the scenery shots of Scotland shot in this film. Highly recommend. 4.5/5

Trick R Treat- I thought trick r treat was good but could of been better. It was just a fun movie to watch. It wasn't to scary (all though it did have its moments) it was more suspenseful. 3.5/5

Watched two last night:

Zombie was above average for me. It was a cool story line and the last 30mins of the movie or so was a ton of fun, but the first part dragged a little too much and there was one scene that was so laughable that I couldn't believe what I was watching:

Who knew that Zombies would be underwater too, let alone be able to take on a shark ??

*** SPOILER ALERT! Click this link to display the potential spoiler text in this box. ***");document.close();Overall, I liked it enough but there was just something holding it back - 6/10.

Phantasm didn't do anything for me at all. Compared to other horror movies made around that time I am very surprised that is shows up on people's lists as a classic, must-see of the genre. Found the Tall Man to be unscary to say the least. Don't know if this is one that has the nostalgia factor working for it and maybe it just doesn't hold up as well over time or what. I will admit that the soundtrack was quality, and was one of the lone things that stood out to me with the movie. 4/10.

I never understood the whole Phantasm is so great either, wasn't scary or fascinating visually.

I hated the mutant idea, but I did like the twist ending. It made sense but was definitely unexpected.

Land of the Dead or Shaun of the Dead?

Also has anybody watched the other Romero movies - Diary of the Dead or Survival of the Dead?

They Live is great in a very ####ty, cheesy way but it's also more of a sci-fi. Love the seemingly 15min fight between Roddy and the other guy over putting on the sunglasses. Cinema at it's finest.

I have been planning on watching Survival of the Dead but I don't want to pay for it. I paid for Diary. I gave it maybe 4/10. Not his best work.

I watched both Land and Diary recently. Diary is :yucky: -- it's POV filming isn't really believable (yes, I know we're talking zombies here) because of the situations encountered. I know Romero is trying to make a statement about the Iraq war there, but it doesn't come across too clearly IMO.Land of the Dead is much better -- seeing the zombies evolve to being able to use weapons is a nice thing to inspire terror. Had a decent cast; Simon Pegg, Dennis Hopper & John Leguizamo. Plus, Hopper's fortified city was at the point in Pittsburgh.
