So is it?  I am 39 years old and have been wanting to start some sort of martial art the last 10 years, takewando, aikido, etc.  I am a good "athlete" in the sense I pick things up quickly however I am severely out of shape.  Thoughts?  Oh my wife is a Physical Therapist and is against it.

No

I took up Krav Maga at the age of 45. I dislike ground work but I am now working hard on it. I say go for it.

It is a challenge to keep up with some of the younger guys but it can be done. My best advice is to get your cardio up there. Nothing deters a young guy faster then some old dude with cardio better then his.

I took up playing organized hockey in a men's league for the first time at the ripe old age of 44 a couple of years ago.  Been an absolute blast, and love seeing how I am progressing.

Do it, and don't look back.

She doesn't want to work at home when I break my hip.
Jesus H. Christ.  I know this is going to sound overly harsh.  And I really don't mean it to.  But:  If you are going to even consider humoring that nonsense, then clearly you don't have the sack for any contact sports.  Take up knitting.

I'm pretty sure I heard Joe Rogan say that Anthony Bourdain got into it in his 60s. Late 50s at least.

No offense taken.  I wish I could knit!??

I respect her opinion, but if I decide to do this it will be because I say yes or no.  The only thing holding me back is looking for a spot to fit it in my calander.  There is a Gracie school about 20 minutes away so that's not to bad.

Glad you took that for the humor it was intended!

Full disclosure:  In the effort to get my son into Judo/Jujitsu, I told him I'd do it with him.  Although I was disappointed when he told me six months into it that he really wasn't digging it (no kids his age, late night workouts, had to choose between that and soccer), I was secretly relieved, because I was kinda tired of getting my ### kicked twice a week.

Absolutely do it.  Just try to take it slow and easy - your muscles & ligaments tear easier than they did when you were younger.  You will be fine, just pace yourself.

Eta: I started at 35.  That's a fine age for jits, but too old for MMA.

Too late, should probably just lay down and die right where you are.

I started at 39. As others said take it easy, particularly when you start rolling. Natural reaction for a flight or fight response to take hold and go 100% when you dont know what you're doing. Thats when you get hurt. Go easy, learn and tap out frequently.
