49ers TE Davis cracks leg bone

49ers tight end Vernon Davis cracked a bone in his leg during a 38-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday at Monster Park and is expected to miss four weeks.

Davis was injured on a play in which 49ers running back Frank Gore fumbled near the goal line. The fumble was returned 98 yards for a touchdown by Philadelphia's Mike Patterson.

Gore also apparently strained a stomach muscle while trying to stretch over the goal line with the 49ers trailing 24-3 in the third quarter. Patterson, a 292-pound defensive lineman, picked up the ball and lumbered downfield for the longest fumble return for a touchdown in Eagles history.

Davis, the sixth overall pick in the draft, was hurt while trying to chase down Patterson. He was taken off the field on a cart.

``I was trying to tackle him and I just pulled up,'' Davis said. ``I didn't make any contact. I felt something and just fell down.''

Gore walked to the locker room after the play and the extent of his injury won't be known until today. Coach Mike Nolan said he was questionable for next week.

After seeing this guy's combine workout, and then seeing him on all those Under Armor commercials, he struck me as more of a body builder than a football player.

I guess the proof is in the pudding.....

He broke his leg, not sitting out exaggerating some fake injury. The only thing that might be a problem for him is the amount of force a guy like him exerts on his legs that may cause injuries like this (think David Boston).

sonofa! Thanks for the effort MKB4, please stop posting my players injuries though, TIA.

OK, putting aside game situation and importance, has there ever been a more costly fumble in NFL history? You fumble on the goal line, hurt yourself, they return it 98 yards for a touchdown and the team's #1 pick breaks his leg chasing the guy?

That's a bad play.

And what exactly has been proven? The only TE in recent memory that has made an immediate impact is Shockey. Gonzales was not the Gonzales we know in year one, nor was Gates. If anything, Davis has surprised with his blocking and he is starting because he can stretch the field and open other avenues for the offense. His hands have been awful, because of some bad habits and he is still not ready for the game speed of the NFL. But the Niners want to accelerate his learning curve...

The guy did lead the acc in receiving as a tightend. He is more then a workout freak. Tight end in college is a lot different then TE in pros however.

Ahhh, you know that cracked bone thing... two advil and a hailmary and you're back in the lineup after a day or two

LOL @ the ignorance of youth. ...then again, my recent memory is much better than most. Can you say "DITKA"The most prolific numbers from a rookie TE.In a 16 game season today's TEs can't sniff Ditka's rookie numbers:In 14 Games, Ditka put up these stats: 56 receptions for 1,076 yards and 12 TDs

LOL @ 45 years ago qualifing as recent memory. Even though I was t-9 years old at the time, I am well aware of Ditka's impact. Nice plug for a Chicago Bear BTW...So, It looks like you made my point for me-

So is there any more info on the extent of injury? SF homers? We still looking at one month? I'm considering buying him low, but if this is something that will probably nag him all year, obv. not worth it.

I have Davis, but his hands concern me. My buddy was an NFL scout, and he doesn't like Davis. He said that Davis has bad hands, and pointed out that Maryland used to throw a lot of short, easy passes to Davis so that he could get into the open field and run with it. I wonder if Davis is shaping up to be another Ricky Dudley.

It's probably a good idea to write him off for year one. He's going to need a full off-season to assimilate mentally. Even when he gets back healthy, he will likely be too inconsistent to leave in your line-up. It's possible that things may come together for him at the end of the season, but I would bet against it.Not to mention the fact that Eric Johnson and Alex Smith seem to have chemistry and Delanie Walker is coming back from injury...

This is true, Davis is not a natural when it comes to catching the ball. This can be overcome to a certain extent, witness Alge Crumpler (though he still drops balls) and Terrell Owens. He also has bad habits, such as trying to catch the football with one hand. It could be very possible that he turns out to be another Ricky Dudley if he doesn't put in the work. Reading articles on Davis, it does seem to have a desire to work hard and be the best, dating back to his days in high school. Time will tell. Also, things will be easier for him when he knows what to expect on the field. It looks like he is running his routes a bit out-of-control. Not sure if that is his style or if we can expect him to look smoother...

As long as Davis works very hard to get better he will be a beast. He has amazing ability. Dudley was a lazy bum.

I agree that Davis can work on his hands. Clearly, he has the talent to be a gamebreaker. But I am hearing that Davis isn't even the 2nd best TE on the 49ers right now.
