6th annual FBG Chess tournament- Kutta 1st place winner! (1 Viewer)

just wondering how long it took.   majority of moves in 2 days or smattering of moves over 4 days?  Did you both ever play for a solid 2 hours or so?
42 moves (each). We started Saturday and agreed to a draw this morning. We had a few flurries of activity but mostly spread out over the days.

I was the speed bump mostly.  I took my time when I needed time to think it over, and let the old subconscious work on it too.  I figure as long as we're not the last game going we'd be fine.  Mission  accomplished 😎

We had a good battle

Sorry. I've been slacking - was out of town and let things slide.

We will try to hustle our game up (when I say "we" I mean "me.")

AAA defeats nysfl2 1-0
AAA didn't fall for a nice little pawn sacrifice that I set up, then made a series of nifty moves to force a queen-for-rook trade. I tried to hold out as long as I could after that, but he showed no mercy.

Looking forward to seeing where I screwed up.

As I’ve shown in previous tournaments, I’m far from an expert but the most glaring mistake I saw was move 23 - probably should have taken that pawn with your Queen as it allowed me to take the pawn.

AAA, I'm interested in your thinking on the bolded move.  Was this a stalling move or were you looking to reposition you king there?  Either way, why?

I feel like you were being generous offering the draw at that point.  I think I screwed up that endgame and although I was going to try to force a perpetual loop I don't know if I could have managed it from that position.

We both screwed up a few times which is par for the course.  My thinking was you’d bring your rook down to the first row and I couldn’t do anything other than get out of check.

I was worried about Rd8 - and I liked that his rook was stuck on that end.  Once I was able to force the R-Q exchange I figured I just needed to make sure he didn’t promote the pawn and I was in good shape.

Some thoughts:

1.  On move 14, after white placed his queen on B3, you immediately took his knight Bxf3. Minor quibble, but this weakened you. Having the two bishops vs bishop and knight is a slight advantage in the middle game; you gave it up unnecessarily. However, you’re still in the better position at this point; see below.

2. 18. ...Ba5. This is a blunder . White is not taking that a pawn. But worse, you had a powerful good bishop on on the a7-g1 diagonal. THIS IS YOUR BEST PIECE ON THE BOARD. So long as it stays on that diagonal, it controls the center of the board, hindering White’s pawn advances, threatening your own pawn advances. White has a bad bishop, blocked by his own pawns on white squares which can’t advance. So what you want to do now is get your rooks to the center of the board on d8 and c8, and use them to advance your pawns forward in the center.

Instead, you move your bishop to a5 hoping for a quick trap, and follow it up with c5. You have now just turned your powerful bishop into a bad bishop, blocking it with pawns on black squares.Despite this you still have a chance to win this game because white makes a terrible blunder which is....

3. 25. Rxe5. White taking this pawn helps you immensely. You may have a win; at the very least you have a draw. All you have to do is play Bf6 followed by Bd4+. Now look at the board: yes you’re down a pawn. But suddenly your bishop is powerful again, more powerful than even before. White has no good strategy; your bishop blocks everything he might try to do. At worst you have a draw here. Instead you played Qd6, and failed to take advantage.

4. 31....Bb2 was a blunder and it’s your last chance to avoid a loss. You cannot allow his rook to go to d7. So your move should have been Rd8 (either one) and force a trade. That allows you to fight for a draw. Once white gets his rook to d7, the game is lost.

Interesting.  Instead of taking the free pawn what should I have done there instead?  Push the pawn to d4?  Seems like I should take the pawn advantage there but I agree with what you are saying.

Before bringing your rook down to attack,  you need to move your king off the dark square. Once your king is on a white square, then your whole attack works. You can attack the Queen with your rook, take the pawn on e5, and if he plays Bf6 just take the pawn on c5. You don’t need to fear Bd4 any longer. Yes you’ve still freed up his bishop but now you’re 2 pawns up so it doesn’t matter

Thanks, Tim - I'm pretty sure I know where you identify my big blunder, but I'm going to go back and look at it over the weekend. I'm pretty sure that undervaluing position to win minor pieces is a pretty consistent weakness in my game.

Not going to end tonight. I’ve got to go to bed. After shamrock had his foot on my throat early in the game I’ve battled back but I’m the worst closer in the sport.
Hilarious sometimes how people can have such different perspectives. I felt like you had your foot on my throat. Felt like I was slithering around tiptoeing in the grass that entire game.

Just had a lucky break at the end. That's usually what this game comes down to in my experiences. Great game man.

Assuming this means you won?

Just give Irish Idiot a win against me in Round Two.  I won't be able to do the PM thing.  In fact, since I resigned against kutta due to time pressure (not that I would have won), if someone just wants to take my spot that's cool.

Not good. Are you sure? I think @joffer may still want in the tournament.

Are other people going to have a problem with the pm thing?

It is a big deal because it prevents @irishidiot from playing, and it may set a pattern. There may be another way for him to play you rather than by pm. Let’s wait and see what he’s got to say.
Then just replace me.  I didn't get why you allowed someone to participate who couldn't use CT in the first place but hoped I wouldn't have to deal with it.  Naturally, I did.
