7.3 Earthquake in Jamaica (1 Viewer)

I grew up in NCal, so lots of earthquakes. But worst I ever felt was in NYC from the one epicemtered in DC. Scared the bejeezus out of me. That was a lateral one too.
I've never felt an earthquake.  Or seen a tornado touchdown.  I did finally see a bear in the wild, so I got to check one thing off my bucket list.

They said lots of reports in Florida of shaking.
Wow. Here in Boca Raton at my office where I am less than a half a mile from the ocean I felt nothing. This would be about 45-50 miles north of downtown Miami

I think it’s crazy the big 3 news outlets are all covering politics and noting about the earthquake. Crazy times we live in now.

I was in an office 40 feet underground near the Mall for that one. Made an impression on even the CA people.

friend of mine is in Jamaica right now. said he was walking on the beach with his wife when it happened. they didn't feel a thing or realize anything had happened until getting back to the hotel bar where people were talking about it.

Still haven't see any reports of damages.  That's amazing to me.  It was a 7.7 and it struck between two third world countries.  How was nothing damaged?  I mean, that's awesome.  But mind blowing.

5.1 aftershock.

Looks like there were about 12 small aftershocks to the west since the initial quake.  Clustered all near the Caymans.

I saw 2 videos from people in tall buildings in the Miami area showing movement of hanging verticals and swaying of a hanging light of about 1-2 inches. One video was from the 30th floor. I was surprised to learn that the Miami area has the 3rd highest skyline after NYC and Chicago. The threat from earthquakes is very low.

BTW, these tall buildings sway a little during hurrricanes. I think it's by design.

Yeah.  All buildings do.  I remember working in Houston on the 25th floor (not even that high) during a crazy windy day.  I don't think it was tropical but it was windy.  And even though you didn't feel like you were moving, you just felt off.  And I don't get motion sickness.  But you could really see it when you went to the bathroom and the toilet water was splashing back and forth in the bowl.

5.4 magnitude earthquake in the DR.  I know that's not incredibly huge, but that could do some damage down there, I'd think.
