80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

6.16 - Still of the Nighthttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_tfq0qTDDE – Whitesnake - Metal/Hair Metal.

Not sure how 'Metal'-ly this is, but I definitely think it fits into the 'Hair' part of Hair Metal. Much harder than this doesn't fit into my favorites, but loved David Coverdale's voice in the songs off this album. Being a teenager in this era, always thought that the videos were wonderful. Thank you, Ms. Kitaen. :)
I love the middle part of that song.

No defense needed for Whitesnake.

Unless you select the version of Here I Go Again where he sings "hobo" instead of "drifter." Hobo generally doesn't work in a song unless you're Roger Miller.
Could be a good category. Songs that mention hobo.

ETA - I'm wrong about 70's, that was 82
I was pretty sure you knew more about David Coverdale than I know about anything.

I know his overall best stuff is on "Slide It In"

But Still Of The Night is the teets

By the way, have you hidden your Here's Hair playlists? I totally couldn't crib from them last night (I'm still figuring out how the hell Spotify works since they've removed the ability to search by my Facebook friends).

Nah they're there, I'm sure my stuff is a mess, I just moved them up for you..

I'm not trying to challenge anything here. If it doesn't fit the spirit of the category, I have no issues re picking

7.3 With or without you, U2, soft rock

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XmSdTa9kaiQ
When I wailed about the Petty song, it was simply to seeing a song I'd inevitably wail along to when it comes on the radio classified at soft-rock.

Anything that keeps this category from becoming the complete works of Peter Cetera is probably a good thing.

Not sure if this song ever made it south of the border, I'm going to guess not. These guys have settled into a fairly by the numbers country-rock act now (25 years later), but this is an absolute monster of a song. There is a radio/video edit that is a more conventional 5 minute alt-country song, but this is an 80s draft, so I'm taking the 8 minute version with the 3 minute psychedelic keyboard break in the middle.

Also, could go in ahead of its time since everyone wanked over Wilco and My Morning Jacket for releasing similar stuff 10 years later.

7.07 - Diamond Mine - Blue Rodeo (Country)

Nobody is going to argue with Hall & Oates as R&B. They're a Philly soul band.

On a related note, I still laugh every time my wife refers to "Live at Daryl's House" as "**** You, Oates."
We were talking at trivia about how well most of their stuff still holds up, I think "Kiss On My List" was a clue
Yeah, I've long been on the boat on the stuff that was considered the "pure" R&B before the 80s pop. Like She's Gone or Rich Girl. But I was considering Maneater for my guilty pleasure before realizing that I feel absolutely no guilt about liking Maneater. It's fun.
Their 70s album Abandoned Luncheonette is an awesome album.

Gotta run to lunch. Here you go....

7.12 - Magic Power, Triumph (Non US/UK band)

Thanks again, Canada! :hey:

The song is just so...freaking...triumphant.

Haven't we all felt like this before?
She climbs into bed, she pulls the covers overhead

And she turns her little radio on
She's had a rotten day so she hopes
The D J's gonna play her favorite song
Or this?

The world is full of compromise

The infinite red tape
But then this happens...?

But the music's got the magic

It's your one chance for escape

So turn me on, turn me up
It's your turn to dream
A little magic power
Makes it better than it seems

I'm young now, I'm wild now
I want to be free
I got the magic power
Of the music in me!!!!!

Yeah and it's too bad JL isn't on Spotify, I love a couple of his 80's cuts. Well also, it's too bad he got shot.

I wonder if Yoko didn't want him on there. Solo PM, GH (but only a couple), and RS are on there, but JL and the Beatles aren't.

OUCH! Sniped. Was going to use this as my guilty pleasure. One of my favorite songs, easily fits into my top 10.

ETA: Here is the video. Very cool. ;)

Yoko is a fruit. I've got stuff like that imported into Spotify locally, but I think it's silly for anyone to be holding out at this point. It's where the kids are.

There shouldn't be any guilt in liking that song, but Andy should feel guilty for acting so gay about it.

The worst thing about Spotify isn't the missing artists but the flood of bad re-recordings, tributes and karaoke versions that have appeared to fill the gap. I can almost always avoid them with the desktop version but I hate it when I hit them on my phone.

What, you don't love AC/DC tribute bands?
