80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

I love(d) New Jack Swing but it happened pretty late in the decade. There were some records with a NJS sound before it but I think of Guy's debut album as the official start of the movement. That was mid-1988 leaving only a year and a half of eligible songs.

I'd rather lump it in with R&B and split Rap into East and West Coast categories.

You can put me in the skip category if it comes around and I am not here.

I don't have a lot of time to prep for this one, and I never like to be that guy that holds things up.

" you must be able to produce the version of the song you select on your final mixtape,"

This could mean just a Youtube link, right?

Yeah, I copied and pasted those links from an old version, that was more from when we were actually uploading mixes. As long as you can show youtube/spotify that's fine (even though I can't access Spotify :( .)

Gotta ask - what the crap is New Jack Swing?
At the time, it was considered somewhat revolutionary for traditional R&B acts to adopt hip hop motifs, like sampling. Now, the idea that R&B and hip hop are linked is pretty much a given, but in the 80s, guys like Prince didn't really "get" hip hop (he still doesn't really get it, although he's tried at times). So when Guy and Bobby Brown started using some of those influences, it felt kind of fresh.

I don't like the "ahead of its time" category, so I'm doing it first. I think it's a tough category. I think this band was ahead of its time, and was a big influence on several bands in the 90s.

1.02 - Where is My Mind - Pixies (Ahead of its/their time)

People are always asking me if I know Tyler Durden.

There was also a well done remake of this song made for Sucker Punch.

Pixies were one of the first bands I was thinking of when Eephus was asking about this.

This category was frightening me so this pick clears it up a bit, although great song is gone.

I know this was covered 100 times last draft.

I just did the spotify premium thingy. I think I have the creating a playlist down - how do I go about linking that when it's all done?
