80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

Not even close to my favorite Madness song - might not even break my top 10 Madness songs but FFS those Brits have horrible tastes in music. The vast majority of the UK #1 songs are unlistenable.

18.3 House of Fun - Madness - UK #1
Always liked these guys - not just for their sound but they always seemed to be having a good time in their videos.
The strange thing is they are probably the only band that I have every seen whose live sound absolutely destroys their studio recordings. Most of the time I am disappointed by live shows because either the singer can't sing as well, or the studio recording has extra instruments being played, but Madness is ridiculously good. I highly recommend their Madstock live performance. IIRC the crowd was so big and into the music all the jumping up and down in rhythm caused evacuations

In high school I tried to convince my parents that going to London for a summer trip would be awesome (and it would conveniently coincide with the Madness reunion).

Thankfully, a few years later they toured the US for a bit. I saw them 3 times in California - the best show being in Santa Barbara with Blink-182. Small crowd - ridiculously good music.

There is a lot of grooving going on in here today. Might as well keep it going...This video is trippy. It was also the first video to ever be played on Video Soul on BET (Black Entertainment Television).

19.02 - Let's Groove - Earth, Wind, & Fire (Disco/Dance/House)

I was in the process of typing that song and hit the "show new post" alert.

Well, simey wins if we score this draft based on how many musicians were on stage at any one time. I'm pretty sure EW&F had about 7 electoral votes around this time.

Unless someone shoehorns Arcade Fire into wannabee 80s

15.06 Black Sabbath - "Heaven And Hell" (metal/hair metal)

ETA: RJD taking over helped me avoid doubling up on Ozzy.
Realized I picked Maiden for metal this morning and doubled up on the category. Throwing this one back then and going with a different category

15.06 Whodini - "Friends" (rap/hip hop)
this was going to be my rap song. Didnt think it was on anyones radar. Back to the drawing board
Not a rap fan, but if I'm gonna pick it, it has to have a reasonably positive message.

Alright, getting into the time where categories and tough and some artist/songs really need to be represented in here. This will go nice back to back with the Bat for Lashes song I took as the wannabee 80s. Not sure what category it'll end up in, depending on my last couple picks...

19.07 - "Running Up That Hill" - Kate Bush (Pop)

I found the category challenging. I think the message in my rap song is that Big Daddy Kane has a really high opinion of himself.

19.xx Joyce No. 2 - Johnson Mkhalali (Non US/UK Band)

The 80s were a big era for World Music in general and African music in particular. Interest was spurred by the anti-apartheid and Live Aid movements and Western musicians such as Talking Heads, Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. There was a certain amount of cultural tourism involved but it was good to see some incredible musicians get some recognition.

This instrumental is a mbaqanga tune from the classic Indestructible Beat of Soweto compilation.

Ain't No Half-Steppin is a classic in the "Sucka MCs Be Frontin'" sub-genre. And that, in my mind, is what 80s hip hop is all about.

He sure ain't no half steppin', yo.

Oh, what the hell. I don't think this is a great song, but if I'm going to choose a song with nostalgic value, I can't discount how fun it was to go down to the Elementary school when I was a freshman in high school and throw down some filthy dunks on the 8ft rims while playing this song.

Was looking at another Whodini song (sort of an instrumental) But only sort of fit one category and not well..

I just can't get my dance #### right, I am throwing back Nu Shooz in case anyone else wants it (not likely). And I owe a pick. I have to figure something else out for that one.

This is my third and final shot at this pick. Two extended dance tracks totaling 17 minutes to close out my mix. This was low on my list to start, mostly because the only version they have is 8 min, but everything I had above it I have now decided I hate.

It is the jam though

Moving violations are easy to fix

Just tell the deejay to fix it in the mix

So happy when I found this group - This screams Prince to me.

18.19 Girls - The 1975 - (Wannabe 80s)
I'd not heard of them until yesteday afternoon when the teens who run my house were cranking up a different song that sounded 80s to me. I asked who and what it was. Put on my headphones for a better listen and considering changing my wannabe for it. It was awful up close. :)
They put on a pretty good show
Well, my daughter who just hung a darksideothemoon poster in her room told me I cannot get into them because I embarrass her.
