Why I love the radio station I've mentioned a few times.


Dramarama issued its first full-length release, 1985's Cinéma Vérité, on France's New Rose Records. It was later re-released in the USA after receiving airplay on KROQ-FM radio from influential Los Angeles disc jockey Rodney Bingenheimer (who at first actually thought the band was French). Bingenheimer alerted Posh Boy Records at New Rose who gave Robbie Fields the green light to contact the band directly in New Jersey.

Subsequently, the track "XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX", perhaps Dramarama's most recognizable song, became a number-one hit on KROQ-FM, becoming a staple of alternative radio airplay, and even today is one of the most requested songs in KROQ-FM's history (younger listeners often call the station asking "What's that song called that goes 'XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX'?" Following the local L.A. success of "XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX," the band obtained a far larger advance from Chameleon and permanently packed up and relocated from New Jersey to Los Angeles.

Biggie's Popagandist work is criminally underrated. That's actually the worst of the three Popagandist singles, probably because I wrote the lyrics in about 10 minutes (and I also because I can't help choosing Journey or Boston songs because Biggie finds them hard to sing).

.O.rang (or 'O'rang) is a band led by Lee Harris and Paul Webb, formerly of Talk Talk. The group's first album, Herd of Instinct (1994), was recorded similarly to Talk Talk's later albums: guest musicians played hours of improvisational material, then the performances were edited down and pieced together. However, in contrast to Talk Talk, the song structures were not planned before being recorded. Paul Webb explained, "it was recorded before it was written."[1]Fields and Waves (1996), after experiencing several false starts, was recorded with more control.[2]

.O.rang's music exhibits more culturally diverse influences than Talk Talk. Webb notes, "We used to be in a reggae band when we were younger . . . The Talk Talk thing was always very Westernised, and we were listening to other kinds of world music."[1]

Started listening to the mixes today, and figured I will just go with a first posted, first listened to order.

The main reason that I do these drafts is new music and rekindling a passion for something that I haven't listened to for awhile. Hopefully in the process, somebody might get interested in a track I have on my mix and i can pay if forward.

The 80s is a huge blindspot for me - mostly I do 70s, 90s, and try to keep up with some new stuff. I am positive there will at least 1/4 of the songs on each mix that I have never heard before.

My favorite songs from Zilla's mix that I was introduced to this afternoon:

1. Thin Ice - LOVED this one. Must have gone back through and listened to it again a few times today.

2. Last Cigarette

3. No Parking - On the Dance Floor

Overall, really enjoyed the mix (I am sure I will be saying this about damn near all of them). Our tastes are close, so there were more than a few I had written down as possibilities for my mix. Was listening to it in the car with my 7 year old, and caught him dancing a bit to the Bowie and Falco tracks. :thumbup:

and guilty pleasure... it's a tough one for me- I think it's mostly what you're describing... some artist or band that just rubbed you the wrong way for whatever reason (in your case, poor taste and lack of intelligence), but still put out a song that beat the odds and worked for you.

Do you have to have spotify premium to create a list for play on mobile devices? I was just going to upload a .rar to mediafire or whatever.

the answer to #2 is no (I think). You'll just get commercials to interrupt the flow.

sn0mm1s mix was next this afternoon. Another great mix. Surprisingly, there were only a few songs that I had not heard before. However, what I loved is that even songs that I was familiar with, I have not heard for a long time. Songs like Jungle Love, Tenderness, It takes Two, Save it for Later, and even Don't want to Fall in Love really hit the spot as I was dancing around the house doing chores. Eephus' might be the mix to jump rope to, but this might be the mix to shake your ### to while doing dishes and laundry.

Favorite new songs:

1. There is a Light That Never Goes Out

For whatever reason, I have never really listened to the Smiths. Really liked what I heard here.

2. Hey Suburbia

3. Daylight

Also was surprised how much I liked that Sade song as well. Next up: Zamboni

Songs I knew I liked: Blister in the Sun, Big Love

Songs I thought I liked more: 99 Luftballoons. Far less funky than I remembered.

Songs I fast forwarded through: None but I considered it during Kiedis' stupid "sailin on" rap in Higher Ground

Transitions that worked: From Madness to Matt & Kim. I was mildly critical of the Matt & Kim track as a Wannabee 80s but it made perfect sense in this context. The mid-tempo cuts at the front of mix all flowed well.

Transitions that didn't work: Eddie Rabbit to RHCP was pretty abrupt. The seques toward the end suffered a bit as well but I think that'll happen to everybody. 22 songs is a lot.

Random revelation: The album cover for the compilation with the Rob Base track. Oh my. I hardly noticed that Abracadabra was a live version.

Just finished listening to JZilla's list. I am not a heavy metal guy (as anyone who looks at my playlist would likely guess) so when I first looked at the playlist I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it much. However, I found I wasn't skipping over anything and really liked:

Lay Down - Priestess

Prowler - Iron Maiden

But, the gem of the playlist for me is:

Thin Ice - Pitchfork

While I am not a big fan of metal I am a big punk fan and that was an awesome tune I hadn't heard before. I will be adding that to my iTunes Library (and I will check out what other songs they have).

Overall, I thought it was a solid mix. Without looking at anyone else's if there was an award for most eclectic mix JZilla might win it running away. It isn't very common to have Ice T, Bobby Brown, MARRS (sniped on that song) and LL Cool J on the same list as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Dokken.

I agree - the weakest song by far is the Nena tune. It was one of the last picks and I wasn't happy with it. The other option I considered was moving Oh Yeah to non-US/UK and choosing "Good Enough" by Cyndi Lauper as the movie (Goonies) or getting crazy and throwing in "Star Wars theme" by John Williams (or perhaps Imperial March) and have the mix open with that. Transitions were hard as well - RHCP and Quiet Riot don't mesh well with the rest of the mix. I tried a few songs between there but gave it up for a lost cause.

Glad I got a convert for the Matt & Kim. Sandwiched between Madness and Jungle Love I thought you convince a lot of people that it was an 80's tune.

 
Looks like well over half the drafters are in the clubhouse at this point. Anyone object if I throw an UDFA mix out there later on this evening?

(I'll be using it to make good on an idea I threw out to Andy upthread ... namely, everything on it will be from 1988. Also, it'll probably just be a YouTube playlist of studio cuts, because I'm that guy.*)

No Traveling Wilburys on spotify apparently so subbed another Roy Orbison song - You Got It. Also the only versions of Ray Charles - Shake a Tailfeather were karaoke abominations so I subbed in Biz Markie - Just a friend.

I wasn't going to make a pure draft list because some of the categories and my picks are just a mess... for me. My compromise was a long playlist of overlooked stuff mostly, new wave and alternative, that I really like and want on a playlist... for myself. But I started feeling guilty so I put my draft up and will do both.

 
Zamboni's mix might take the cake as the one that I knew the least amount of songs on - I think Chaos commishes might be the other one at first glace. This one challenged me in a good way, having a lot of new songs and stuff that I normally wouldn't gravitate to. Had to listen to a few of the tunes a second time to let them sink in. Loved the metal choices - Maiden always scores, and it's been a bit since I've listened to Diary of a Madman.

My favorites of the many that I hadn't heard before: (zamboni gets an extra listed since there was a lot)

1. Ah! Leah!

Dammit, this is a catchy song. Listened to this one a few times. Plus the album cover with the picture of Eugene Levy had me cracking up.

2. Blood and Roses

3. I Wanna Be Adored

4. Sign of the Gypsy Queen

Also, it has been driving me ####in' nuts - what is the 80s movie that Send Me an Angel is from? Seems like it was used for a montage or something and can't quite place it. (also, that album cover made the pants a little tight)

Sounds good. I think the good and bad of these drafts is forcing us way outside of our comfort zones sometimes. Sometimes I feel guilty if I just have to look something up on the internet and put a song in I have 0 connection to. Makes the mixes more interesting and well rounded maybe, but I think the idea of a couple mulligans should be in play more for that reason.

Maybe this idea for next time: if not mulligans, we can trade 2 categories: ie I could trade my country category to simey for her metal. We would then have 2 of one and skip the other.

I wasn't going the obscure route, but I guess it worked more that way as the draft proceeded. I didn't really have a theme, but I did wind up going with several "MTV hits". That is, songs/videos that got a fair amount of airplay in their time, even if the songs themselves may not have charted highly (if at all) on the Billboard pop charts.

There is some metal I like. As for country, I like old school/classic country (my parents played it a lot when I was growing up), country folk/rock, and alternative country/Americana. I do not listen to new country.

Just finished listening to JZilla's list. I am not a heavy metal guy (as anyone who looks at my playlist would likely guess) so when I first looked at the playlist I thought I wasn't going to enjoy it much. However, I found I wasn't skipping over anything and really liked:

While I am not a big fan of metal I am a big punk fan and that was an awesome tune I hadn't heard before. I will be adding that to my iTunes Library (and I will check out what other songs they have).

Overall, I thought it was a solid mix. Without looking at anyone else's if there was an award for most eclectic mix JZilla might win it running away. It isn't very common to have Ice T, Bobby Brown, MARRS (sniped on that song) and LL Cool J on the same list as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, and Dokken.

Just finished Zilla's mix and have to second most of this. Some of the metal made my ears bleed but I got through it. Loved the Pitchfork song too. Wasn't too keen on the remixes of Amadeus or Pump up the Volume. If I could steal one song it would be Modern Love. The first 5 songs trick you in the door and then it's devil worship time with Billy Squire and the chick from Lone Justice held prisoner in the basement. Could have done without Cali. Rounds out nicely with last three bringing you back to "civilization". Was a wild ride - Thx.

Oh, and love that version of Tainted Love - my favorite 9 minute song in the draft!
