Guilty Pleasures
One of my gb's freshman year of college loved this band- he went with the whole make-up, androgynous look to boot. It was all a great big train-wreck as far as I was concerned, but I couldn't (and can't) help myself from slowing down and gawking.

21.- Love Missile F1-11- Sigue Sigue Sputnik (Guilty Pleasures)

This is the acoustic version from Freed Weed... the album version that's on Spotify is a bit harder.

22. Brand New Love- Sebadoh (Soft Rock)

Maybe this idea for next time: if not mulligans, we can trade 2 categories: ie I could trade my country category to simey for her metal. We would then have 2 of one and skip the other.
There is some metal I like. As for country, I like old school/classic country (my parents played it a lot when I was growing up), country folk/rock, and alternative country/Americana. I do not listen to new country.
just using it as a loose example...

Zamboni's mix might take the cake as the one that I knew the least amount of songs on - I think Chaos commishes might be the other one at first glace. This one challenged me in a good way, having a lot of new songs and stuff that I normally wouldn't gravitate to. Had to listen to a few of the tunes a second time to let them sink in. Loved the metal choices - Maiden always scores, and it's been a bit since I've listened to Diary of a Madman.

My favorites of the many that I hadn't heard before: (zamboni gets an extra listed since there was a lot)

1. Ah! Leah!

Dammit, this is a catchy song. Listened to this one a few times. Plus the album cover with the picture of Eugene Levy had me cracking up.

2. Blood and Roses

3. I Wanna Be Adored

4. Sign of the Gypsy Queen

Also, it has been driving me ####in' nuts - what is the 80s movie that Send Me an Angel is from? Seems like it was used for a montage or something and can't quite place it. (also, that album cover made the pants a little tight)

Next up: Eephus
:lmao:

it was the teen wolf too study montage I was thinking of. no wonder I surpressed that knowledge.

I owe a couple:

My mom taught Sebastian Bach... I still unironically like Bryan Adams, I think it's somehow bred into Canadians.

21.09 - Makin a Mess - Skid Row (Hair/Metal)

22.13 - Hearts on Fire - Bryan Adams (Guilty Pleasure)

...and since Running up that Hill isn't on Spotify, I'm going to sub in She's So Young by The Pursuit of Happiness for pop

I hereby decree the post-'80s-mixtape-draft free agent signing period officially underway! :football: But only, in this particular case, for songs from 1988.

Overall this is a little bit pop-heavier than I'd like but, in my defense, drafting 22 categories' worth of music from a single year is harder than it sounds.

Here's the below playlist, in its entirety (at least I think so): http://www.youtubeplaylist.org/play/p/MDAwMDAxNTE1

1. Sinead O’Connor - “Mandinka” (Ahead of Its Time)
The Kurt Warner of this thread's draft class. I was on pins and needles hoping no one would snatch this one from my grasp in the late rounds. Pins and needles, I tell you!

2. Men Without Hats - “Pop Goes the World” (Non US/UK Band)
Can't stand The Safety Dance. Love this song. Does that make me weird?

3. Cheap Trick - "Don't Be Cruel" (Cover Song)
Had I been drafting in real time, I definitely would have slotted this into "guilty pleasure" at the time.

4. Lita Ford - "Kiss Me Deadly" (Metal / Hair Metal)
A definite contender for one of my favorite opening couplets ever. I'm pretty sure you can walk up to any random 40-year-old and say, "I went to a party last Saturday night ..." and they will finish this verse for you.

5. Soul Asylum - "Sometime to Return" (Punk / Post-Punk)
One of those bands where you show a friend who wasn't into '80s alternative their live videos from the Hang Time era and they say, "Wow ... I had no idea Soul Asylum didn't always suck."

6. Drowners - "Luv, Hold Me Down" (Wannabe '80s)
This has such a Smiths / Cure 1988-era vibe to it, I was shocked to learn these guys probably weren't even ALIVE in 1988.

7. Godfathers - "Birth, School, Work, Death" (Title Track)
I remember this one being played tirelessly on 120 Minutes. Man, do I miss that show.

8. They Might Be Giants - "(She Was a) Hotel Detective" (Original Mix) (Skull Mix) (Silly / Funny / Weird)
One song ... two versions ... one of the most underrated bands ever.
9. The La's - "There She Goes" (One Hit Wonder)
I cannot tell you how psyched I was to find out that the La's initially released this single (in the UK, but hey) in '88.
Perfect addition to any mixtape.
10. Enya - "Orinoco Flow" (UK #1)
Thank God for one week in November, as this is literally the only UK #1 from 1988 that I wouldn't feel completely embarrassed adding to this, or any, mix tape.

11. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince - "Nightmare on My Street" (Rap / Hip-Hop)
Philly represent!

12. Alabama - "Song of the South" (Country)
What I know about '80s country music could fit into an 8-track player without taking out the 8-track first. So Alabama sounds like a plan; only problem is I'm gonna be left high and dry the next time we do a "Wannabe '30s" category.

13. Pet Shop Boys / Dusty Springfield - “What Have I Done to Deserve This?" (New Wave / Synthpop)
I didn't know where I was going to fit this song, until it turns out that Prince's "Alphabet Street" isn't anywhere to be found on YouTube (?!). The moral of the story: Inside every dark cloud ...

14. U2 - "Angel of Harlem" (Pop)
I hope there's a version somewhere on Spotify that's as heavy on the brass as this live cut but without, you know, the whole random 20-second pause in the middle of it.

15. Bruce Hornsby & The Range - "The Valley Road" (Soft Rock)
I took piano lessons from age 6 on. By 13, I was completely sick of the piano. The first time I heard this song, I stuck with piano lessons for another solid year just so I could learn to play it.

16. Times Two - "Strange But True" (1st song, 1st album)
41,000 views on YouTube: it's good to know that 1 in 8,000 Americans is as obsessed with completely obscure '80s pop as I am.

17. Johnny Kemp - "Just Got Paid" (R&B / New Jack Swing)
Because it is, in fact, Friday night.

18. Belle Stars - "Iko Iko" (Movie/TV "Theme")
Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman coming down the casino escalator in matching suits is IMO one of the best snapshot scenes in movie history. Though when I first saw the movie all those years ago, I seem to remember that escalator being a lot longer. And the casino being more glamorous.

19. XTC - "Dear God" (Indie / Alternative)
Brilliant artists, brilliant lyricists, brilliant instrumentalists ... how did these guys not become the biggest thing ever?

20. Erasure - "A Little Respect" (Dance / House)
There has pretty much never been an Erasure song I've heard that I didn't really like. I'm honestly not sure I can say that about any other artist, ever.

21. Glass Tiger - "I'm Still Searching" (Guilty Pleasure)
Did anyone epitomize the last gasps of cheesy '80s pop better than Glass Tiger? If you haven't watched their "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone" video recently, drop what you're doing and hie thee to YouTube. You will :lmao: . I guarantee it.

22. Joan Jett & the Blackhearts - "I Hate Myself for Loving You" (Wildcard)
Is it a "guilty pleasure" if I admit I like this song far more than "I Love Rock 'n' Roll"?

Nice list, Glass Tiger definitely falls into the so bad it's good category and I went through a period where I preferred Pop Goes the World to the Safety Dance as well, probably changed after I saw them live.

By the way, I don't think U2 qualifies as a non US/UK band...

Love that Godfathers tune. Was trying to figure out where to put it here... didn't even think of it as a title track

Well, it's official - this grumpy old white guy doesn't like to jump rope. ;) If 'boni had the most I hadn't heard so far, this mix is probably farther down the spectrum of music that I like. I will be honest - the first 5 or 6 songs where a little rough for me, but as soon as I got to Graceland I was digging the mix a lot more. Doesn't mean I didn't like most of the songs - it could've even been some of the extended mixes of some of the songs at the start that got me.

Anyway, songs that I really liked that I hadn't heard before:

1. Same Old Scene

2. Beat's So Lonely

3. Welcome to the Boomtown

and a especially sad one to list: Graceland. :bag:

Started listening to Andy's mix, but not sure if I will finish it tonight.

If I didn't move NWA back to rap/hip-hop, this was the song I was going to take. Was also thinking about Girlie had a Mustache as a silly song.

I have 0 clue what categories any of these songs were drafted into. Now I am nervous that all my #1s were everybody's "guilty pleasures".

v's 80s draft

No Traveling Wilburys on spotify apparently so subbed another Roy Orbison song - You Got It. Also the only versions of Ray Charles - Shake a Tailfeather were karaoke abominations so I subbed in Biz Markie - Just a friend.

hope you enjoy it :)
Just so you know - it looks like 2 of the songs are greyed out and not able to be heard. Not exactly sure what it means when they are grey like that.
hmm I wonder why.

lol.

I'm actually looking forward to listening to your mix. As I mentioned when I took my metal/hair song... I don't know much about it (just remembered Panama, VH... that counts, right?). and could use a good jump-start, if at least to remind me that there's a reason I don't much about it.

Whoops, good point. Gonna have to switch them with Men Without Hats.

Which is a good thing, because when you're dealing with a single year you really don't want to have to go to your bench.
Based on you list, seems like it was tough year for music... kinda inbetween some genre shifts.

eta: that came out a little harsh on your list... which wasn't my intention- I liked it.

dunno. when I was making my extra credit list, the same thing happened with ac/dc and another song I had loaded.

I listened to Zilla's tonight as well.

5 songs I really liked not already on my iPod:

My Kind of Lover

One Last Cigarette

Thin Ice

Colors

Going Back to Cali

I have next to no 80s rap, and have been into it more lately so will likely be something I pick out of a lot of mixes.

Some of the songs rock to hard for me :bag: The Ratt, Dokken hair stuff are more my speed

My favourite song on there is the extended Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go, which is the only version of that song that should ever be played. Pump up the Volume is also great, but no news on either of these. These two were already on my "Favourites" playlist.

I see one AC/DC song on spotify (Gone shootin?), If I were uploading this, my mix would be a bit different, as there would have to be something from both Back in Black and Pyromania, which aren't on Spotify.

my mix did get a little hairy, but also surprised at the pop-ish stuff that made the mix.

like I posted before, zilla has a 35 song hair/metal mix of also rans for the draft and I have a 50 song one waiting to be unleashed...

:goodposting: :goodposting:

I don't think I have any of his songs on my mp3 player, but #### it if I don't find myself blissfully singing along to his songs whenever I hear them on the radio.

Only had this song on any short list. 88 was about when music started to turn ####ty. (not saying that these songs were ;) )

85 hair metal songs? My unchosen Alt/NW playlist is at 38 but I'm probably going to shorten it for quality control purposes. It could be 100% bands not picked, but that also hurts quality, so it will probably end up around 40 using a few bands already picked. While doing this a couple tunes I want to revisit had been evading me as far as song title and or band. I was cranking things up pretty high (friday night, man) when I found one of the songs I let out a woot. So did my next door neighbor. I closed the window and turned things down. :sadbanana:

I tried to put mine in order as if it were a broadway show/80s era movie (ala Rock of Ages). Because I did it after I picked, there's some forced songs in here. Had I been picking this way from the beginning, there's some songs that wouldn't be in it (sorry La Bamba).

Kardplayer's Koncept Flick

Opening montage and Credits - Pac Man Fever

First shot is of the PacMan screen, then you see a nerdy middle school boy playing video games (played by a young kard lookalike I hope), laughing with his buddies, and then riding his bike home through his lower middle class neighborhood.

Inside the house - Come Dancing

The boy comes home and his sister (who's face we don't see - her back is to the camera) is on the phone. You can hear her - she's flirty, giggling... junior/senior in high school. More montage here - showing some of the scenes from the song (her sitting in front of the house in a boy's car, parents looking worried). There may be some arguing with mom - again, we never see her face.

Meet the sister/getting ready to go out - Bette Davis Eyes

Why haven't we seen her face? Because the opening shot of this sequence is her eyes, which pans out to see her getting ready to go out all the way through getting into her car.

Pregaming - White Lines

The first party has begun. She is at a house party - packed, walking from room to room. We see her snorting coke and things start moving in "coke time".

Leave me alone - Bad Reputation

As she finishes another bump of coke, some strait laced dude, who is drinking, but is horrified to see her doing coke, confronts her. She pushes back and tells him off by singing this song. We see her storm out of this party and head for a dance club.

At the club - Relax

Now at the club, she meets up with another group of friends and they dance. She's dancing with a lot of different guys (and girls) here - sort of bouncing between them.

Introducing our male lead - Der Kommissar

We see our hero walk into the club. Crowd parts as he enters.

They meet - Take on Me

As she bounces around, she bounces to our guy. We see them dance - he's more into it than she is, but she's a little into it.

He tries to get her to stay - Don't Go

She bounces away, but he convinces her to come back. Now she's into him.

Bow-chicka-wow-wow - Danger Zone

They leave the club and go to his place. Good things happen.

They're into each other - Could I have this dance

We see them wake up after their night of passion. We see a montage of them doing early dating things with each other and then a transition to the "dark side" (her coke use, him storming off after an argument).

Oops, time to get married - The River

He knocks her up. She's showing as they get married.

Let's blow this town - Fast Car

They decide to leave the town where they met, and find a place they can call their own

Intermission

Life is hard - Welcome to the Jungle

We come back from intermission and see them in their new life. It's a struggle. She's working in a convenience store, he's a mechanic. They argue a lot.

The break up - In the Air Tonight and The Key

Separated and raging - It's the End of the World As We Know It

Feeling bad about the breakup, longing for him - Total Eclipse of the Heart (her)

Figuring out that he needs to get her back and how to do it - Every Rose Has It's Thorn (him)

Getting back together - Lean on Me

He comes back to her with the big romantic gesture, she swoons. Fade to black, show the credits...

2nd song of the Closing credits - La Bamba

This song doesn't really fit anywhere, so we make it the second song of the closing credits, and put it over/in a deleted scene on the DVD, but at least we can include it in the soundtrack.

Your feedback is welcome :)

Kardplayer's taken it to a whole new level
I think we need a diy concept album draft!

Good work Kard.
would be fun if we were given complete freedom over what we are drafting.
Don't think it really needs a draft though. People could just prepare and post (and rationalize) their mixes. A snipe would kill in this format.
Agree. I would love to take a crack at this with a blank palate of songs

I tried to do a concept album for the draft kp modded. The snipe killed it. Would have been fun. Nice effort

I did a 4 or 5 track song cycle based on the American Bicentennial at the beginning of my 1970s mixtape. It was about as bad as it sounds.

Nice to see I'm not the first to pick a Hoodoo Guru's song.

I'm going with their 2nd single which references both the Japanese failed invasion of Darwin in WW2 and the devastating Cyclone Tracy which hit Darwin on Christmas eve and then came back and whacked the city again a 2nd time on the way out to sea on Christmas day.

18.10 - Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo - 3:11 - Punk/Post Punk
I think every time you draft a Hoodoo Gurus tune, I remember and mention that the band I was in in HS did two covers of theirs... Like Wow/Wipeout and Dig it Up. I can remember that, but I can't remember if we were called Captain Reemo or Exploding White Mice. Jeebus- I'm hoping as I get older, I remember a third option.
And I keep forgetting you've said that before haha.

Dejavu ain't what it used to be

The Guilty pleasure category is a hard one to define apart from one's own opinion of something you shouldn't like, but not only like you love.

David Sylvian clearly comes into that category for me (sorry Floppo). I hated few artists with as much passion as I did him and Japan.

Arty, pretentious ####s that thought they were better than everyone else. Most beautiful man my ####.

Then came this song which I first heard upon watching Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and I didn't recognize that awful tinny voice.

Of course this track is brilliant and it still is the only thing I can listen to completion from Sylvian. Call it irrational, but this definitely falls into the guilty pleasure category.

I had to even find a clip that didn't feature his "beautiful" face

19.10 - David Sylvian & Ryuichi Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours - Guilty Pleasure - 4:41
:hot:

tinny? TINNY?!!!

THAT'S IT.

this is a great song- thought it wasn't on Spotify any more?

and guilty pleasure... it's a tough one for me- I think it's mostly what you're describing... some artist or band that just rubbed you the wrong way for whatever reason (in your case, poor taste and lack of intelligence), but still put out a song that beat the odds and worked for you.
This just popped onto my ipod... which I don't listen to that much, and which I have set to shuffle. Haven't heard it, I think, in years.
Sorry for any offence. I knew if I embelished I'd get a bite.

Sylvian was just one in a long line of poseurs that the cool indie kids at school loved and because I hated them, by assocation I hated their music.

Now......they were mainly right  and my then defence of Nik Kershaw and Matthew Wilder is somewhat laughable.

By the way, I don't think U2 qualifies as a non US/UK band...
Whoops, good point. Gonna have to switch them with Men Without Hats.

Which is a good thing, because when you're dealing with a single year you really don't want to have to go to your bench.
U2 is the perfect non UK band.

Ireland is not part of the UK.

The UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ireland is not part of this group.

If you are excluding Ireland from UK, you have to exclude Canada from US

If you said British Isles, it would be a different argument.

I love Sylvian (and I know that you know that I know, so my anger was equal parts embellished to your disgust)... obviously- but I also recognize that his music is completely pretentious and tied to where I was a teen and early 20s guy. I think it's the kind of stuff that if I heard for the first time now, I might not even take a sniff of. kinda wonder the same thing about my best friend, who I met in high school. He'll always be my best friend, but if I met him now... I probably wouldn't even meet him now.

For my Spotify mix I had to make the following changes

Pet Shop Boys - Always on my mind is just the regular version, not the glorious remix

Kraftwerk's "the Model" - is the 2004 remix. Kraftwerk, just like George Lucas and his revisionist digital history make it difficult to get the original versions

Hoodoo Gurus - Tojo - I can't play it, but I can copy it from someone else's playlist. Good luck if you can hear it.

Sylvian/Sakamoto - Forbidden Colours - I couldn't find any Sylvian (awww shame) so had to go with an instrumental version

Peter Schilling - Major Tom - I couldn't find a decent English version, so had to go with the original German version. I also added an English cover version done by "Done Again", which may as well be Gale Boetticher

JML's 80s Genre Mixtape

I expect there to be some that can't be played, but let me know if it's really bad
