80s Genre/Categories Mixtape Draft - Draft Underway (1 Viewer)

Here's the spotify link for mine:

Kard's Koncept

I "played" this for my kids today and they pointed out the brother opens the movie and then disappears for no reason... so I'm including him when she's upset in total eclipse and the big romantic gesture, as well as the deleted scene that La Bamba plays in. Never let it be said I can't be flexible.

By the way, I don't think U2 qualifies as a non US/UK band...
Whoops, good point. Gonna have to switch them with Men Without Hats.

Which is a good thing, because when you're dealing with a single year you really don't want to have to go to your bench.
U2 is the perfect non UK band.Ireland is not part of the UK.

The UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Ireland is not part of this group.

If you are excluding Ireland from UK, you have to exclude Canada from US

If you said British Isles, it would be a different argument.
Yeah in hindsight I probably would have excluded canada from that category, so much shared culture between Canada/USA, no matter though was good to see so many Canadian bands show up in the mixes.

Andy D's mix might have been the mix that I was most familiar with so far. Definitely not a bad thing - this mix contained some of my favorite 80s songs in Sychronicity, The Promise, True, and the Power of Love. Also love that Cinderella song.

My favorites of the new tracks:

1. Don't Change

Don't know why, but I never really dug into INXS' albums much. Really liked what I heard here.

2. New Church

3. Like Flames

Next up is Ramsay's mix, I am about 1/2 way through that one...

Here's a list of almosts with some overlaps... Floppy 80s 2 Electric Boogaloo.

edit- I'm making mine a concept/movie soundtrack too...

Fade-in:

Floppo is on a sofa watching TV in a ####ty NYC apt on the Lower East Side, eating popcorn out of a bag and dribbling crumbs onto his gut with following song playing over fade-in and sofa excitement

1- So Alive- Love and Rockets (1 Hit Wonder)

Floppo dusts off the popcorn crumbs, moves to the computer and turns on Spotify while reading aviation blogs. The rest of the songs play while Floppo locates the Missing Malaysian airliner. Terrorists are using it, but in a similar fun-going manner as Soul Plane. Cut to Terroist 72 Virgin Soul Plane

2- Dreams Never End- New Order (1st Song, 1st Album)

3- Panama- Van Halen (Metal)

4- The Pyramid- Love of Diagrams- (80s Wannabe... another Siouxie style outfit)

5- Thorn of Crowns- Echo and the Bunnymen (silly/weird/... c-c-c-cucumber) (Lonesome Cowboy Dave by Pere Ubu was a thought too)

6- The Style You Haven't Done Yet- Boogie Down Productions- (Rap)

7- Everybody's Got Something to Hide- The Feelies (Cover)

7- Neon Lights- Love Tractor (Cover)

8- Avalon- Roxy Music (Soft Rock)

9- Swordfishtrombone- Tom Waits- (Title Track)

10- I scare Myself- Thomas Dolby (Cover)

11- Schizophrenia- Sonic Youth (Indie)

12- Kurious Oranj- The Fall (Post-punk)

13- Numbers- Kraftwerk (dance)

Listened to RHEs mix last night. Something hit me last night that I have failed to mention with some of the other mixes - what I have found impressive from a lot of these so far is that besides the obvious categories or if I know the band, it is hard to place the song with it's category. Even with the categories, people are still able to mine a lot from the music they like and put a nice stamp on the mix. This one ended with a damn funky back 1/3 of songs that I really liked. Still wish I had looked instead of relying on my memory and missing out on Waiting Room.

Favorite songs that I hadn't heard before:

1. Sorry Somehow

Have heard a bit of Hüsker Dü before, but I wonder if it was just the albums before this one. Listened to this one a few times already.

2. Hands

This was what got me thinking about my statement above. Thought it sounded slightly too new, but still fit in very well. Couldn't get the song out of my head.

3. Going Underground

Fantasy would be the honorable mention. Hadn't heard the hair export from the north before.

Next up is Acer

For someone who really only loved metal and punk and hated new wave and other stuff in the 80's, I sure loved that song.

I feel I'm on top again, baby, that's got everything to do with you---ooh---ooh...I'm alive...

Great hair band, great songs. Ric Browde actually wrote those, which explains the difference between their first and second albums, one of which was far superior.

Decline II featured them. My favorite part of that was how guilty they looked when Spheeris asked them if they used drugs. "Drugs? Who...us?"

Here are a few of the leftovers:

Crosby, Stills, & Nash - Southern Cross

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
I've been strumming away trying to learn southern cross for a month. I thought about it for soft rock. It's a great tune and I love the back story, and sailing, and the reach to pape'ete. But I wanted to try to stick to 80s bands. CSN is eternal. Great song.

That is not my favorite plimsouls but its on my other list I'm building. You nailed a few other 80s bands that I have on my non-draft list. I'll post pretty soon. Nice work there, Andy. :hifive:

Disappointed this isn't on spotify

Mostly new wave alternative synthpop post punk bands/performers not taken afaict from the google doc

53 of 'em. 3 and a half hours and growing.

I plan to extend and refine this with everyone's applicable draft picks, and by doubling up on several bands. This should feel very much like listening to Kroq commercial free in the 80s (my goal here). Might be worth subscribing if you like the sound, but I fully understand those who hated that era. In some ways so did I, but the party was fun, I was at the beach, single, making money, and this draft made me nostalgic.

A few more...

Katrina & the Waves-Do You Want Crying

The Primitives - Way Behind Me

Kix - Cold Blood

Van Halen - Little Guitars

Blondie - Dreaming

Sammy Hagar - Eagles Fly

Rod Stewart - Forever Young (the unplugged version on Spotify is best)

Britny Fox - Girlschool, Long Way To Love

Satriani - Big Bad Moon, I Believe

DLR - Just Like Paradise

Berlin - Masquerade

Heart - Nothin At All, Who will you run to

ZZ Top - Stages

Berlin - Pictures of you, Tell me why

U2 - Who's going to ride your wild horses

WTF!!! I can't believe anyone would remember this! I don't know why I loved this song ...but I did. Crazy #### - pure early MTV. Kind of embarrassing now as I watched it again. What the hell kind of bad ballet outfit is he wearing anyway? And sweet lemon high waters with the italian bedroom slippers at the beginning.

Acer: no surprise there were a few songs on here that I was considering - MOP, Bust a Move, Mountain Song. Bold move starting the mix with 2 8+min songs too. I know some might be surprised, but this think this mix might be more aggressive than mine was. Not sure what was more disturbing for me - the Edie Brickell song or the old school Ministry song ;)

Favorite unheard songs:

1. Betray

I dabble in punk, and don't tend to like a ton of it, but really liked this one

2. Panty Raid

3. Buffalo Stance

Kept seeing this on 'best song of the 80s lists, but had never heard it before.

WTF is up with the cover for the Human League track?

Last edited by a moderator:
Simey: very pleasant surprise. Stupid to prejudge, but there are a couple drafters in here that from previous outings I assume that I don't agree a ton musically with, and i thought this might be one when I started it up. Honestly, I really wasn't paying too much attention to who drafted what. This mix was a nice mellower follow-up to Acer's mix. It seems as though even the mixes that I have been listening to have an ebb and flow with each other in the way I am going through them. Anyway, there was a ton of songs that I knew and loved on here - she sniped me on Pretty in Pink, Fantastic Voyage, and The Zoo.

Favorites of the unheard songs:

1. Perfect Skin

2. The Killing Moon

There are a couple bands I have been meaning to listen more to that were drafted a few times in this draft and this is one. Good stuff.

3. Ain't No Half Steppin'

:gang2:

Looks like Chaos is up next. Glancing over the list, I think I only know 5 songs...

Related - No one took any Neil Young. I know his 80s albums are all over the map, but "Trans" actually has some great songs on it. Had I thought of it, I would have considered the version of Mr. Soul on there.

I'm not a huge Paul Simon fan, but he had a couple in the 80's that I liked.

"You Can Call Me Al" is one of the decade's most fun songs.

"Train In The Distance" is terrific.

What's the thinking on Earle's "Copperhead Road"? I like it.

Extras:

Here are a couple of extras that I would have liked to put in my draft, but couldn’t fit them.

Clannad

An Irish musical group made of siblings and cousins. Enya is the younger sister/niece of the members, and was originally in the band.

In a Lifetime (w/Bono)

The story is that Bono hid in the back of the hearse in this video to cross the border between N. Ireland and Ireland.

Theme from Harry’s Game

Theme song from a BBC television show. Also used in a VW commercial in the 90s.

Scruffy the Cat - You Dirty Rat

STC was an 80’s Boston college-radio band, called “one of the last survivors of the ‘80s roots-rock movement, which basically consisted of punks with a yen for bar-band sounds”

Don’t Give Up - Peter Gabriel (w/Kate Bush)

Great video, shot in one take.

Spotify Mix – Here is my Spotify Link; unfortunately, the GTR and Bon Jovi songs aren’t on there. But I threw in a couple of the songs above, with Level 42’s acoustic version of “Something About You.”

Nice list, Mr E. That's like a slam-dunk top hits of new wave 80s style playlist right there... amazing you were able to snag all those tunes.

I love Don't Give Up- was looking at it when I first started thinking about this draft and then completely spaced on it.

I know I was a little... slippery... with the categories- but you win for Bobby McFerrin as New Jack Swing/R&B.

Thanks! - Not a big, R&B guy, but no one complained at the time (8th round so people were paying attention!)

can't wait for the next one!

Listened to KarmaP's tonight.

Favourite songs not already on my iPod

Look What the Cat Dragged In

They Came at Night

Revolution Calling

Until death (Us do Part)

The Trooper

A lot of bands I really like on here - Tears for Fears, Madonna, Motley Crue, Dinosaur Jr. but not the "go to" song for any of them, at least for me, not sure if that's by design. Also much less metal than I expected.

Listened to sn0mm1s mix as well

Unfortunately he lost the draft when he drafted Red Hot Chili Peppers ;) , but despite that, I enjoyed the mix.

Favourite 5 songs not on my iPod

House of Fun

Drivin' My Life Away

Golden Brown

Tenderness

Hey Suburbia

The 2nd half of the mix was stuff I knew pretty well, but some real good stuff in there, especially Blister in the Sun, Blue Monday, Abracadabra is a sentimental favourite since my mom was a big fan, and Don't Wanna Fall in Love was a favourite of mine as a kid. Light that... is a perfect mix closer.

When I was in high school, I took drama in grade 10, because we had to take it, art or music and seemed like the lesser evil to completely non-artistic me. We each had to bring a song in, then we split into groups of 4 or 5 and had to pick one song and rehearse it for a couple weeks, then do it in front of one of the younger grades. One of the girls in my group brought "Blister in the Sun", so of course we picked it up so we could act out "body and beats... I stain my sheets", "I'm high as a kite", etc, etc... we did not pass that assignment.

I think I am just bad with bands/song titles. Chaos Commish's mix was a little more familiar that I had thought on first glance. Had the distinction of taking my 2nd least favorite song of the draft in Tarzan Boy. Some fantastic tracks on here with the Beasties, Clash, and GNR. A lot of new songs for me, and a lot that I really liked.

Favorite new songs:

1. Happy When It Rains

This was the other band that I have a blindspot to and was hoping would get drafted a couple times. Loved it

2. In Dark Places

Holy #### - how have I not heard this before? :headbang:

3. Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

I am a little over 1/2 way through the Vike mix.

If anybody is interested in the 3 1/2 hour, 50 song extra credit mix I threw together here is the link:

KPs 80s Extra Credit

There are a few songs that are crossovers with Zillas mix since I had a few that were 1st songs off of first albums written down too. I mostly shifted gears and went with all title tracks after that. It is all hair metal/metal, and I just put on songs as I thought of them so there is 0 order.

Couple personal favs, and a couple were dictated by category. Madonna was just my favorite of the UK #1s (was planning on tacking Express Yourself somehow), and Crue was my 2nd choice after somebody took Live Wire. The lack of more "metal" metal is so people might actually enjoy the mix a little more.

For your 80s metal enjoyment, here are some of my leftovers from the first song off first album - a great category it turns out!
I love all those albums and first songs. (whoops. Only saw the first five, sorry. But still a great mix.)

I have to reference Acer FC -- Brian Baker of Minor Threat was in Junkyard. Amazing. Good album, too.

A couple songs I had written down that were in contention:

UK #1: Under Pressure

1st song off debut: Radio Free Europe, I Don't Know (ozzy), Lucky Star

Cover Songs: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Metallica - Breadfan

Movie Themes: Goonies 'r Good Enough, Miami Vice Theme, St. Elmo's Fire

Ahead of it's Time: Ministry - Stigmata

One Hit Wonder: Future's so Bright

Wannabe 80s: anything by Steel Panther

Title tracks: see link above

Really was trying to fit some Phil Collins, Soundgarden, Dj Jazzy Jeff, Meat Puppets, 10000 Maniacs, Misfits, and a bunch of other bands in as well.

I suggested a metal/hair/hard rockin' draft.

Also thought about a wide open one - 1 word titles or something on those lines.

I'll be stuck in the worst of LAs traffic for a few hours tomorrow. This should be just the right thing.

Finally finished the second playlist - KP's.

I found his metal easier to listen to than JZilla's mix.

Unbeknownst to me I am apparently an Iron Maiden fan as The Trooper is the 2nd Iron Maiden song I have liked.

I immediately added Cult of Personality to my iTunes - for whatever reason it hadn't made it on despite me knowing the song.

Most of the softer stuff I already have so  I find "Oh Sheila" amusing since in college (living in a tiny triple) mentioning that song was the signal one of my roommates used to signify he wanted us to clear out so he could #### his gf (her name wasn't Sheila).

The gem of this mix for me was Front 242 "Until Death". Never heard the song. Never heard of the band. But these guys were way ahead of their time. This is the best part of these sorts of things being introduced to "new" artists/music. Great list.

It's a shame that I cannot listen to your mixes on spotify in the correct order on my phone without upgrading to premium.

One word titles might be interesting - not sure if we did something like that already though. In any case, have to imagine there are enough to cover 20 rounds with at least 15 people.

I also like Floppy's paired songs idea.

I have to say, outside of the small frustration of some songs not being available, spotify is a great tool for these drafts. I know JML likes CDs, but to me this is perfect. I agree with Valence, I would love to hear the order on mobile, but I dont think I listen enough to justify the 9.99 cost. Maybe when my kids get a bit older

"Which Way To America" is an absolute kick ### song by Living Colour.

I also was this close to picking one of Juice Newton's more popular songs - "Queen of Hearts" or "Love's Been A Little Bit Hard On Me". I really like the 2nd (also has a great video - kind of like Pink's "Please Don't Leave Me") but both are a little more pop than country and she'd already had a song picked so I went with the Oak Ridge Boys.

I also preferred when we used to upload the mixes since I have slightly spotty service on my drive to work and cds/ipod works better.

however, spotify opens the door for me on these drafts. easy to research stuff and have accesss to a ton of songs I wouldn't normally have in my rotation.

all the drafts have been good.

would also love a 70s and 90s version of this draft too.

UK #1's: UB40 - Red Red Wine (this category was a lot harder than I anticipated)

I took Love Buzz, you can't have it.

I really wanted to take this but it's not on spotify, it's also late 1989 release from a 1990 album, so could have dual eligibility:

Pure - Lightning Seeds

On the topic of 80s love songs I wanted to take but couldn't quite squeeze into a category at the end

The Whole of the Moon - The Waterboys
