______ Passed Away Today, RIP (3 Viewers)

Honestly, because my kids and wife absolutely adore Elf (and I do, too, actually), this is what I've seen him most in, and really think he's great in.  Sure, Misery and Brian's Song are probably "better" movies, but Elf is kinda turning into a Christmas classic - if it hasn't already - and like you said, younger folks probably don't even know of those other flicks.

In any case, God bless his soul!  Great actor.
Elf is absolutely his 2nd most well known role. I don't think it is even close at this point. Nobody under 50 has seen Brian's Song. Misery is a really good movie and a nice solid $60 million hit. Elf made $250 million, spawned a Broadway musical and is on TV/streaming non-stop for about 2 months every year. It is firmly in the top 5-10 Christmas movies of all time which means it will live forever and be not only a movie but an annual tradition for millions of families.

At first, I thought this ridiculous.  Godfather, Thief, Misery, Brians Song, THAN Elf.

However, you made solid points.  I may not like it, but what you say is true.

Definitely a generational thing. Among anyone over 50, the most well known would have to be Godfather and Brian's Song, then everything else. Maybe even Rollerball in the top 5.

James Caan as Frank in 'Thief':

I am a true blue kind of a guy. I've been cool. I am now unmarried. So let's cut the mini-moves and the bull****, and get on with this big romance.

Yep. Elf is the It’s a Wonderful Life of the Millennial/Gen Z set.

The whole Carlos arc is one of the best parts of one. Caan was pitch perfect as the hot headed eldest son.

The movie doesn’t do quite capture his character as well as the book (does it ever?) but man what a performance.

Loved him with BDW in Brian’s Song. Has to be the GoAT made-for-tv movie, right?
Was just discussing this with a friend....we agree.

Fair points. And I certainly didn't mean my post to be a slight at Elf, which I saw in the theater when it came out and loved. You may be right that it has gained something approaching cult status in the years since. But I do think it was mostly the fact that it was his most popular late-career movie.

In any event, he was fantastic in all those movies. May his memory be a blessing.

Came in here to post this exactly.  None of my kids know Sonny Corleone but when I said Buddy’s Human Dad in Elf they all knew who it was immediately.

RIP and sad to read but sadder still is thinking that wikkid probably would have had a great story to tell here.
Wow, that just sort of hit home right now how much wikkid affected my daily life. I would eagerly read his posts, hoping for something that made me feel something, whether it made me shake my head or curse him softly for his take on things, or whether I just basked in the fun and brilliance of it all. I suppose he would have had some story about Nazareth, and if he didn't, he'd tell you why they were worthy/unworthy in some way (though in the obit realm, he was almost always looking on the kinder side of things) and make you think about things in general.

Always made me think. Always got the hedonist/Boomer perspective with a dose of later-life morality from him.

RIP wikkid. You deserve one more RIP in your oft-frequented FFA obit section.
